Overview

The device is a 12.6-inch 12-Amp Electric Scarifier + Dethatcher, Model AJ801E, designed for residential lawn care. It serves a dual purpose: scarifying and dethatching, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy lawn by improving aeration, nutrient absorption, and drainage.

Function Description

As a scarifier, the machine works by scratching through and between the grass with specially adapted prongs. This action collects and removes unwanted parts from the lawn, such as dead grass and debris, while leaving the grass blades intact. Simultaneously, this process scarifies the ground, leading to better aeration of the soil. When used as a dethatcher, the machine employs fine needles to scratch the surface of the lawn, picking up light debris. This helps to improve oxygen absorption, airing, and drainage, which are vital for grass health.

The scarifier + dethatcher is designed for private domestic use and is not intended for commercial or industrial applications. It should not be used in wet weather conditions, nor for mowing dry, wet, or unusually high grass, such as pasture grass, or for shredding leaves.

Usage Features

Operating the scarifier + dethatcher requires adherence to several safety guidelines to prevent serious bodily injury or death. Before use, operators must read and understand all instructions and familiarize themselves with the controls, especially the emergency stop. Children should never be allowed access to the machine.

The device features an ON/OFF switch lever and a safety lock button for controlled operation. To start, the safety lock button must be pressed and held while pulling the switch lever. Releasing the switch lever stops the machine. Operators should ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free of foreign objects that could be picked up and launched, causing injury. Wearing personal protective equipment, including safety glasses with side shields or goggles, ear defenders, and a face or dust mask in dusty environments, is mandatory. Loose clothing or jewelry should be avoided as they can get caught in moving parts. Rubber gloves and substantial non-slip footwear are recommended for outdoor work.

The machine should not be forced; it performs best when used at its designed rate. It is crucial to disconnect the tool from the power supply when not in use, before servicing, changing accessories, or performing any maintenance. When stored, it should be kept indoors in a dry, high, or locked-up place out of reach of children.

The scarifier + dethatcher is equipped with an extension cord restraint holder to prevent accidental disconnection during operation. A loop of the extension cord is pushed through a slot on the holder, and the appliance cord is inserted into a proper outdoor extension cord. The use of a polarized plug and extension cord is emphasized to reduce the risk of electric shock. Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection is recommended for the circuits or outlets used.

The cutting depth can be adjusted to one of five stages, ranging from -10 mm (deep scarifying) to 10 mm (high raking). This adjustment is made by pushing the depth adjustment lever towards the wheel and moving it forward or backward. The optimal depth depends on the type of lawn and grass height. For scarifying, deeper settings are used, while for dethatching, shallower settings are appropriate. The manual provides a chart detailing recommended settings for scarifying and raking.

The thatch collection bag is an integral part of the operation. It must be securely attached before use to prevent flying debris. The bag should be emptied frequently, ideally when half full, to maintain optimal performance.

When operating, users should always maintain proper footing and balance, walking rather than running with the machine. Hands and feet must be kept away from rotating parts. Extreme caution is advised when operating on or crossing gravel drives, walks, or roads, and when reversing or pulling the machine. The machine should not be operated in wet grass or on excessively steep slopes, as this can lead to slipping and falling. Working in slight overlapping rows is recommended for effective coverage, ensuring all parts of the lawn are scarified or raked evenly.

Overload protection is built into the device. It activates if scarified material builds up around the cutting device, if the material exceeds the motor's capacity, or if there is too much resistance. In such cases, the product should be switched off, disconnected from the power supply, allowed to cool, and the cause of the overload eliminated before resuming operation.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for long and reliable service. Before any repairs or servicing, the machine must be switched off, disconnected from the power supply, and allowed to cool down completely, with all moving parts coming to a stop. Protective gloves should be worn when handling the tines, as they are very sharp and can become hot during use.

Key maintenance tasks include:

  • Cleaning: The machine should be cleaned with a brush or cloth. Solvents or water should not be used to remove dirt. Air vents must be kept unobstructed and clear to prevent overheating.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the power cord and extension cords for damage and replace them immediately if found. Check all fastening elements (nuts, bolts, screws) to ensure they are tight. Inspect the thatch collection bag frequently for wear or deterioration. Ensure all covers and guards are undamaged and correctly fitted.
  • Cutting Device: The cutting device is the component most subject to wear. Its condition and mounting should be checked regularly. If worn or blunt, it must be replaced immediately. If the machine vibrates abnormally, it indicates an unbalanced or deformed cutting device, which requires repair or replacement. The scarifying cylinder is preassembled, and a raking cylinder is included for interchangeability depending on the application. To change the cutting device, the thatch collection bag is removed, the machine is placed upside down, and two bolts with spring washers are loosened to remove the existing cylinder. The new cylinder is then aligned and secured.
  • Storage: After use, the machine should be switched off, disconnected, and allowed to cool. It should be stored in a dry place. All screws and bolts should be cleaned and oiled before storage to ensure a long service life. The thatch collection bag should be cleaned and dried thoroughly before storage to prevent mildew.

In case of a foreign object strike, the motor should be stopped, the product switched off, disconnected from the power supply, and inspected for damage before restarting. Any damage should be repaired by an authorized service facility. For any service or maintenance beyond the scope of this manual, or if problems persist, users should contact the Snow Joe® + Sun Joe® customer service center.
