(4) Outside built-up areas, PLEVs with a maximum design speed of less than 12 km/h may only be driven on footpaths (sign
239 Annex 2 to the Road Traffic Regulations) and shared foot- and cycle paths (sign 240 of Annex 2 to the Road Traffic
Regulations). If these are not available, it is permitted to ride on structurally designed cycle paths and shoulders.
(5) Notwithstanding paragraphs 1 and 2, the road traffic authorities may allow exceptions for certain individual cases or for
certain applicants in general for driving on footpaths (sign 239 Annex 2 to the Road Traffic Regulations), shared foot- and
cycle paths (sign 240 of Annex 2 to the Road Traffic Regulations) and pedestrian zones (sign 242.1 of Annex 2 to the Road
Traffic Regulations). A general approval of PLEVs with a maximum design speed of not less than 12 km/h on such traffic
areas can be granted by arranging the additional sign.
