Overview

The ST-RoIP4-Kirisun is a Radio Over IP Network Gateway designed to bridge traditional radio systems with modern IP-based communication platforms. This standalone gateway facilitates seamless communication between various radio networks and Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) platforms, enabling a wider reach and enhanced interoperability for radio users.

Function Description

The primary function of the ST-RoIP4-Kirisun is to act as an intelligent bridge, interconnecting diverse radio systems—including conventional trunked analog FM, ETSI DMR, ETSI TETRA, APCO P25 FDMA, and NXDN—with PoC platforms. This allows radio users to communicate with individuals using PoC applications on smartphones or other IP-connected devices, and vice versa. The gateway achieves this by converting radio signals into IP packets and transmitting them over an IP network, and then converting incoming IP packets back into radio signals for broadcast.

At its core, the device is equipped with a sophisticated 4th generation Super Dynamic Intelligent Digital Tracking System (iDats-4). This technology is crucial for ensuring fast and stable Push-to-Talk (PTT) exchange performance, which is vital for real-time communication. The iDats-4 system intelligently manages the PTT control signals, optimizing the communication flow between the radio and IP networks.

The ST-RoIP4-Kirisun also incorporates PoC-COS/COR PTT Control Technology and Radio-COS/COR PTT Control Technology. These technologies are responsible for detecting carrier signals (COS - Carrier Operated Squelch) and controlling the PTT function (COR - Carrier Operated Relay) on both the PoC and radio sides, ensuring proper signal handling and PTT activation. The device's PTT control method can be configured to prioritize signals from different interface cables, allowing for flexibility in connecting various radio types. For instance, if a mobile radio is connected via a Radio-COS/COR interface cable, its PTT control signal takes precedence. For handheld radios connected via a standard cable, the iDats-4 PTT Control Technology manages the PTT.

Furthermore, the gateway features a 2nd generation Adaptive Digital Filter (ADF-2). This filter is specifically designed to support 2-Way Radio Repeater Systems, enhancing audio quality and signal clarity by adaptively filtering out noise and interference. This ensures that voice communications remain clear and intelligible across the interconnected networks.

The device runs on an embedded Android 4.0.3 OS, providing a familiar and user-friendly interface. Pre-installed with the Kirisun Press2Talk app, the gateway offers immediate access to PoC communication functionalities. This integration allows users to manage their communication groups and settings directly from the device's touch screen.

Usage Features

The ST-RoIP4-Kirisun is designed for ease of installation and operation, requiring no specialized IT expertise. Its standalone nature simplifies deployment, making it accessible for a wide range of users.

  • Simple System Connection: The gateway connects to a radio unit via a dedicated connection cable and to an IP network using a standard Ethernet cable. It also requires an external antenna for the radio unit to ensure optimal signal reception and transmission.
  • Intuitive User Interface: The device features a 4.3-inch touch screen LCD, which serves as the primary interface for displaying information and controlling the system. This touch screen allows for on-screen interaction, making navigation and configuration straightforward.
  • Dedicated Control Buttons: In addition to the touch screen, the gateway includes physical MENU and BACK buttons. The MENU button provides access to the Android OS setup menu and various app settings, while the BACK button facilitates navigation within the Android OS and applications.
  • Flexible PTT Control Mode: The ST-RoIP4-Kirisun offers configurable PTT control modes via DIP switches. This allows the device to support different types of radios, specifically those where the PTT pin is either integrated with the MIC pin (e.g., Motorola) or on a separate pin (e.g., Kenwood). Users can adjust DIP SW1 to match their radio's PTT configuration.
  • Digital Interoperability Stabilizer: Another DIP switch (DIP SW2) controls the Digital Interoperability Stabilizer, which can be set for either a 1-second or 3-second delay. This feature helps in stabilizing digital interoperability, ensuring consistent communication performance.
  • Kirisun Press2Talk App Integration: The pre-installed Kirisun Press2Talk app is central to the device's operation. Users can add accounts and configure app settings directly on the device. Key settings include password protection, basic audio settings like HD Voice, background operation, and alert settings for caller and receiver beginnings.
  • Roger Beep Tone Control: The device allows for the enabling or disabling of the radio channel Roger Beep Tone, which provides an audible confirmation when a transmission ends. This feature can be controlled through a specific sequence of DIP switch adjustments and PTT calls from a smartphone app, offering flexibility in communication signaling.
  • Broad Radio Compatibility: The ST-RoIP4-Kirisun is designed to support different brands and types of radios, making it a versatile solution for integrating existing radio infrastructures with IP networks.
  • Global Connectivity: The product is capable of bridging and extending radio networks across the globe, leveraging broadband network connections (private and/or public). This enables widespread communication, anytime and anywhere, over any device.

Maintenance Features

The ST-RoIP4-Kirisun is designed for minimal user maintenance, with a focus on reliability and professional servicing.

  • Sealed Housing: The device's housing should never be opened by the user. It contains no user-serviceable or replaceable parts, emphasizing the need for professional handling for any internal issues.
  • Professional Repair: Any maintenance or repair work must be carried out exclusively by qualified, specialist personnel (electrical technicians). This ensures that the device is handled correctly and safely, preserving its functionality and warranty.
  • System Health Checks: In cases of visible damage, incorrect operation, penetration by foreign objects, or after prolonged storage under improper conditions, the system should be checked by qualified specialist personnel. This proactive approach helps in identifying and resolving potential issues before they escalate.
  • Environmental Protection: The unit should be installed only in a dry place, protected from the elements. This helps prevent damage from moisture and other environmental factors, contributing to the device's longevity.
  • Power Disconnection for Faults: In the event of a fault, the unit should be disconnected from the external power supply and all other connected devices. This is a crucial safety measure to prevent further damage or hazards.
  • Network Stability Reliance: The device's operation and performance are dependent on the stability and reliability of the broadband network connections. While not a direct maintenance feature, understanding this reliance is important for troubleshooting communication issues, which may stem from network problems rather than the device itself.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Users are advised to consult local regulations to ensure legal use of the product, especially when bridging and extending radio networks globally. This is an important aspect of responsible device management.
  • Interference Reduction Guidelines: Specific installation guidelines are provided to reduce interference. Connected radio units must use external antennas, and a minimum distance of 3 meters should be maintained between the RoIP system equipment and antennas. Additionally, a minimum distance of 1 meter should be kept between the RoIP system equipment and user radio equipment. Adhering to these guidelines helps ensure optimal performance and reduces the need for troubleshooting interference-related issues.
