The Sony CFS-1140 is a portable radio cassette-corder designed for audio playback and recording, featuring a MEGA BASS system for enhanced low-frequency sound.
Function Description:
The CFS-1140 serves as a multi-functional audio device, combining an AM/FM radio tuner with a cassette player and recorder. It allows users to listen to radio broadcasts, play pre-recorded cassettes, and record audio onto cassettes from various sources, including the radio, an external microphone, or other stereo equipment connected via the CD/LINE IN jacks. The unit supports microphone mixing, enabling users to sing or speak over music from the radio, CD/LINE IN, or tape. Its portable design, with the option for battery operation, makes it suitable for use in various locations.

- Cassette Playback:
- Simple operation: Set FUNCTION to TAPE, insert a cassette, and press PLAY.
- Directional playback: The DIR switch allows changing the tape transport direction (FWD/REV) and the FWD/REV indicator shows the current direction.
- Playback modes: Select between playing both sides of a cassette once or playing one side continuously using the DIR MODE selector.
- Fast winding: Rapidly wind forward or backward using the respective buttons.
- Pause function: Temporarily stop playback/recording.
- Auto Shut-off: The unit automatically releases the depressed buttons when the tape reaches its end.
- Recording:
- Supports TYPE I (normal) cassettes only.
- Automatic recording level: Volume and graphic equalizer adjustments do not affect recording level.
- Recording from radio: Select the desired band, tune in a station, insert a cassette, set DIR MODE, check tape transport direction, and press REC.
- Recording from MIX MIC: Insert a microphone into the MIX MIC jack.
- Recording from other stereo equipment: Connect external equipment to the CD/LINE IN jacks.
- Microphone Mixing: Mix microphone sound with audio from CD/LINE IN, radio, or tape.
- Radio Tuning:
- Select desired band (FM, AM).
- Tune in a station using the tuning knob.
- FM STEREO indicator lights up for strong FM stereo programs; if weak, reception becomes monaural, and the indicator goes out.
- Antenna adjustment: Extend the telescopic antenna for FM and adjust its angle; the AM antenna is built-in.
- Sound Adjustment:
- VOLUME: Controls overall loudness.
- MEGA BASS: Boosts or reduces bass frequencies for a heavy and powerful sound.
- GRAPHIC EQUALIZER: Five sliders (400 Hz, 1 kHz, 4 kHz, 10 kHz) allow equalization of reproduced sound.
- 400 Hz: Adjusts middle frequency range (human voice, instrumental music).
- 1 kHz: Provides more presence for vocals.
- 4 kHz: Adjusts sound brightness.
- 10 kHz: Affects general treble (lower to reduce high-frequency noise/tape hiss).
- BALANCE: Adjusts stereo imaging, especially when speakers are not symmetrically placed.
- Power Sources: Operates on AC power (using the supplied cord) or DC power (six size D batteries). The unit cannot be operated on batteries when the AC power cord is connected.
- Speaker Connection: Detachable speakers can be aligned and slid onto the main unit or detached. Speaker cords connect to R and L terminals, with black wires to negative (-) and red wires to positive (+).
Maintenance Features:
- Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues such as the unit not operating, cassette insertion problems, recording difficulties, tape movement issues, and no sound from speakers.
- Head Cleaning: Instructions to clean illustrated portions of the heads with a cleaning tip moistened with cleaning fluid or alcohol to address sound drop-outs, loss of high frequencies, or excessive noise.
- Head Demagnetization: Recommendation to demagnetize heads and all metal parts in the tape path with a commercially available head demagnetizer to prevent sound quality issues.
- Battery Replacement Indicator: The OPR/BATT (operation/battery) indicator glows faintly when batteries need replacement.
