Usage Features

The Spartherm fireplaces are designed for user-friendly operation with an emphasis on safety and efficient burning.

  • Air Control System: The appliance features a combustion air control lever to manage the air supply for lighting the fire, controlled burning, and closing the air supply. Pushing the lever completely to the right provides maximum combustion and secondary air for lighting. Moving it approximately 20mm from the closed position allows for controlled burning, preventing the wood from burning too quickly and reducing glass sooting. The air supply should be completely closed only when the firebox receives no combustion air.
  • Fuel Loading: Designed to burn natural wood only. Recommended wood length is 18-21" (46-53 cm).
  • Glass Door: Features a ceramic glass door for viewing the fire. The door should be closed during operation and not slammed. A special tool is provided for opening and closing the door and operating the air control lever.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always ensure adequate safety measures to protect children from hot surfaces.
    • Do not operate the appliance without fully assembling all components.
    • Do not modify the appliance or its controls.
    • Do not use chemicals or fluids like gasoline to start a fire.
    • Do not store wood within appliance installation clearances.
    • Ensure proper ventilation to prevent negative pressure in the home.
    • The appliance is hot when operated; avoid contact to prevent burns.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the Spartherm fireplace.

  • Ash Removal: Allow ashes to accumulate to 2-3 inches deep. Remove excess ashes, leaving about 1" (25mm) to maintain a hot charcoal bed. Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid, placed on a non-combustible surface away from the home until completely cool. Do not use a vacuum to clean warm ashes.
  • Chimney Cleaning: Both the chimney and appliance should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year. For serious wood burners, cleaning may be needed more frequently (e.g., once a month) depending on burning habits. Proper tools, including a brush designed for chimney cleaning, should be used. The chimney connector, dampers, firebox, and baffle system should also be cleaned.
  • Creosote Removal: Creosote buildup occurs when wood is burned too slowly. Inspect the chimney connector and chimney every two months during the heating season. Remove creosote buildup to reduce the risk of chimney fires.
  • Glass Cleaning: Clean the glass ceramic sheet only when cold. Use a suitable stove glass cleaner. Do not clean hot glass. If the glass cracks or breaks, do not operate the appliance until the glass has been replaced with a Spartherm-approved Robax glass.
  • Plated Parts Care: If equipped with plated parts, clean fingerprints or marks with a glass cleaner or vinegar and towel before initial operation. After the plating is cured, wipe clean as needed.
  • Gasket Inspection: Regularly check door gaskets for adequate seal and replace worn or dried-out gaskets.
  • Warranty: Spartherm Feuerungstechnik GmbH provides a 5-year warranty on the basic body wood insert, a 24-month warranty on elevating mechanisms, operating devices, electronic/electrical components, and original spare parts, and a 6-month warranty on wearing parts around the fire (refractory bricks, vermiculite, fire grates, seals, and glass ceramics).
  • Service History: The manual includes a section for recording service history, emphasizing that the heater must be serviced annually.
