Overview

This document is the original instruction manual for the Spear & Jackson 1400W High Pressure Washer, model Q1W-SP09-1450. It provides comprehensive information on the device's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance, ensuring safe and effective operation.

Function Description

The Spear & Jackson 1400W High Pressure Washer is designed for domestic use to clean various surfaces and objects using a high-pressure water jet, with the option of using detergents. Its primary applications include cleaning machines, vehicles, buildings, tools, facades, terraces, and garden equipment. The device is compatible with Spear & Jackson approved accessories, replacement parts, and detergents. Any use deviating from these instructions is considered unauthorized and relieves the manufacturer of legal liability.

Important Technical Specifications

The pressure washer operates on an input voltage rating of 230-240V~, 50 Hz, with an input power of 1400W. It delivers a working pressure of 7MPa and a maximum pressure of 10.5MPa. The flow rate is 5 liters per minute, with a maximum flow rate of 6.7 liters per minute. The device has an IPX5 waterproof rating and falls under safety class II. The maximum inlet pressure is 0.6MPa, and the maximum inlet water temperature is 40°C (104°F). In terms of acoustics, the measured sound pressure level is 81dB (A) with a K-value of 3 dB (A), and the guaranteed sound power level is 92dB (A). Vibration is rated at 1.5m/s² with a K-value of 1.5m/s². The net weight of the unit is 6.0kg.

Accessories available for this model include a high-pressure washer hose (Part number 01106B12), a fix brush (Part number 01118ZE), a spiral spray lance (Part number 01106BA), and an 8" patio cleaner (Part number 01118ZH).

Usage Features

Before starting, users must ensure all safety precautions are followed, including wearing appropriate protective clothing, ear and eye protection, and verifying that the mains voltage matches the equipment label. The machine should be placed on level ground, and the water supply opened. The safety trigger on the spray gun must be unlocked, and the trigger pressed until a steady stream of water is achieved before setting the On/Off switch to ON.

For high-pressure working, the hand-held spray gun should be held firmly with both hands. The high-pressure pump starts running when the trigger is operated and stops when released. It is crucial to test the surface in a small, discreet area before cleaning, as pressure washing can strip paint or damage surfaces.

The adjustable spray lance offers a 180-degree rotation nozzle to adjust the spray width and pressure, making it ideal for lighter cleaning tasks on cars, bikes, patios, and furniture. Users should adjust the nozzle by turning it in the desired direction, noting that it takes a few seconds for the spray to adjust. Caution is advised as jet spray adjustment is very aggressive, and it should not be adjusted while spraying. The machine should be switched off during extended breaks.

The patio cleaner is designed for cleaning areas like patios, fences, garage doors, gravel, and pebbled pathways without splash-back. When using the patio cleaner, the machine should be stopped before changing the lance for the extension pole and patio cleaner. Cleaning movements should be sideways rather than up and down scrubbing.

The fixed brush is a low-pressure accessory suitable for cleaning delicate surfaces such as vehicles and painted work. The machine must be stopped before attaching the brush to the spray gun.

For detergent application, the detergent bottle is filled with detergent and screwed onto the trigger gun. The pressure washer is then turned on, and the trigger pulled. The liquid detergent automatically mixes with water and is discharged through the nozzle. Detergent should be applied to a dry work surface, from bottom to top, and allowed to remain for a short time before rinsing. It should not be allowed to dry on the surface. Rinsing is done with clean water under high pressure, from bottom up on vertical surfaces to avoid streaking, holding the nozzle 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) from the surface at a 45° angle. After using the detergent system, the bottle should be filled with clean water, and water siphoned at low pressure for one minute to flush the system, then the bottle removed and thoroughly cleaned.

The machine can also operate with water from sources other than a tap, such as ponds and water butts. For such uses, an additional water filter (not supplied) is highly recommended. The water source should be no more than 1 meter below the machine's level, and the water inlet hose should not be too long (approximately 3 meters). The water supply hose must be filled with water before connecting it to the machine. Operating the machine without water (dry running) will damage the pump. To prevent this, the machine should be run without the lance attached until there is a constant flow of water.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the pressure washer. Before any maintenance, the power plug must be pulled out, and only original parts should be used.

An overview of cleaning includes wiping the machine with a slightly damp cloth after every use, avoiding high-pressure water jets for cleaning the machine itself. The high-pressure jet nozzle should be cleaned regularly. The pressure washer is equipped with a water filter in the inlet adapter to protect the pump. If this filter is not kept clean, water flow will be restricted, potentially damaging the pump. To clean the water filter, remove the inlet adapter, take out the filter, rinse it free of debris and blockages, and then replace the filter and inlet adapter.

Over time, water lime scale may build up on the lance outlet. The provided nozzle cleaning pin should be used to remove this.

For storage, the machine should be kept in a dry and well-ventilated area. If storing for an extended period, the cleaning agent should be removed, and all water drained from the hoses. For transport, the original packaging should be used whenever possible.

Disposal of the machine must be done in accordance with local authority guidelines for old electrical and electronic appliances, as it should not be disposed of with household rubbish. The packaging materials, consisting of cardboard and marked sheets, are recyclable and should be made available for recycling.

Safety Information

The manual emphasizes several safety points:

  • General Safety: Read instructions carefully, keep the manual safe, be familiar with controls, never use near people/children/pets, operator is responsible for accidents, machine can be used by those with reduced capabilities if supervised, do not use without reading instructions, not for children or untrained personnel.
  • Personal Safety: Risk of fatal injury when cleaning tyres (keep jet at least 30cm away), never direct jet at persons/animals/electrical equipment/appliance, appliance not for tap water connection without backflow preventer, wear appropriate PPE (safety boots, gloves, helmets, hearing protection), know how to stop and bleed pressure, stay alert, do not operate when fatigued or under influence of substances, keep operating area clear.
  • Operating Safety: Use only manufacturer-supplied hose fittings and couplings, use suitable outdoor extension cords (connection kept dry and off ground, ideally 60mm above ground), electrical supply connection by qualified electrician (recommended residual current device), disconnect from power before maintenance, do not use if supply cord or important parts are damaged, watertight construction for extension cable plugs/sockets, damaged supply cord must be replaced by manufacturer/service agent, water from backflow preventers is non-potable, PVC or polychloroprene sheathed power cords (H05W-F) acceptable at 0°C or above, always switch off when unattended, never carry by cable or hose, remove plug when not in use/transporting/unattended/checking/cleaning/removing blockages/maintenance/changing accessories/damaged/abnormal vibration, do not use near flammable liquids/gases, ensure mains voltage matches label, check power cable/plug for damage before each use, do not use damaged cables/couplings/plugs or non-compliant leads, remove plug immediately if damaged or cut.
  • Maintenance and Storage Safety: Use only original or manufacturer-approved spare parts, unauthorized changes invalidate warranty, do not attempt self-repair (only authorized service stations), store in dry location out of reach of children, handle with care, keep clean, follow maintenance directions, protect from frost damage (drain residual water).

Troubleshooting

The manual includes a troubleshooting section to help users resolve common issues. For example, if there is no power, check the plug, cable, and line, and contact after-sales support if parts are defective. If the washer operates intermittently, check for loose electrical connections or a defective On/Off switch. If there is low or no pressure, check for air in the hose, leaks or clogs in inlet pipes, blocked nozzle, or blocked inlet water. For great pressure varieties, clean the high-pressure jet nozzle and ensure the inlet hose is not twisted. If the machine is leaking, sealing parts may be broken, requiring contact with after-sales support.
