The STANLEY FATMAX SFMCW221 detail sander is designed for sanding wood, metal, plastics, and painted surfaces. It is intended for both professional and private, non-professional users.

Safety Instructions

Users must read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. All warnings and instructions should be saved for future reference. The term "power tool" refers to both mains-operated (corded) and battery-operated (cordless) power tools.

Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well lit to prevent accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust, as sparks can ignite these substances. Keep children and bystanders away to avoid distractions and loss of control.

Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet and should never be modified. Do not use adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces like pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators to reduce the risk of electric shock. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Do not abuse the cord; keep it away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. When operating outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. If operating in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply.

Personal Safety: Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense. Do not operate a power tool when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. Always wear eye protection and other personal protective equipment (dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, hearing protection). Prevent unintentional starting by ensuring the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source/battery pack or carrying the tool. Remove any adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the power tool on. Maintain proper footing and balance. Dress properly, keeping loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair away from moving parts. If dust extraction/collection devices are provided, ensure they are connected and properly used. Do not become complacent from frequent use and ignore safety principles.

Power Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool; use the correct tool for the application. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Disconnect the plug or remove the battery pack before making adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Store idle power tools out of reach of children and untrained users. Maintain power tools and accessories, checking for misalignment, binding, breakage, or other conditions affecting operation. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Use the power tool, accessories, and tool bits according to instructions, considering working conditions and the work to be performed. Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.

Battery Tool Use and Care: Recharge only with the manufacturer-specified charger. Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Keep battery packs away from other metal objects when not in use. Avoid contact with liquid ejected from the battery under abusive conditions; flush with water if contact occurs and seek medical help if liquid contacts eyes. Do not use damaged or modified battery packs or tools. Do not expose battery packs or tools to fire or excessive temperature (above 130 °C). Follow all charging instructions and do not charge outside the specified temperature range.

Service: Have your power tool serviced by qualified repair personnel using only identical replacement parts. Never service damaged battery packs; service should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.

Additional Safety Warnings for Sanders: Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces when the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring. Charging the Battery (Fig. A): The battery needs to be charged before first use and whenever it fails to produce sufficient power. The battery may become warm during charging, which is normal. Do not charge the battery at ambient temperatures below 10 °C or above 40 °C (recommended: approx. 24 °C). The charger will not charge if the cell temperature is outside this range; leave the battery in the charger, and it will begin charging automatically when the temperature is suitable. For maximum performance and life of lithium-ion battery packs, charge fully before first use.

  • Plug the charger (12) into an appropriate outlet before inserting the battery pack (6).
  • The green charging light (12a) will blink continuously, indicating charging has started.
  • Charging completion is indicated by the green charging light (12a) remaining ON continuously. The battery pack (6) is fully charged and can be removed or left in the charger (12).
  • Charge discharged batteries within 1 week; battery life is diminished if stored in a discharged state.

Charger LED Modes:

  • Charging: Green LED Intermittent
  • Fully Charged: Green LED Solid
  • Hot/Cold Pack Delay: Green LED Intermittent, Red LED Solid Note: Compatible chargers will not charge a faulty battery pack (no light). If the charger indicates a problem, take it and the battery pack to an authorized service center.

Leaving the Battery in the Charger: The charger and battery pack can remain connected indefinitely with the LED glowing, keeping the battery fresh and fully charged.

Hot/Cold Pack Delay: When the charger detects a battery that is too hot or too cold, it initiates a Hot/Cold Pack Delay. The green LED (12a) flashes intermittently, while the red LED (12b) remains on continuously, suspending charging until the battery reaches an appropriate temperature. The charger then automatically switches to pack charging mode, ensuring maximum battery life.

Battery State of Charge Indicator (Fig. B): The battery includes an indicator to quickly determine remaining battery life. Pressing the state of charge button (6a) shows the charge remaining.

Installing and Removing the Battery Pack from the Tool:

Warning! Ensure the lock-off button is engaged to prevent switch actuation before removing or installing the battery. To install battery pack (Fig. C): Insert the battery pack firmly into the tool until an audible click is heard. Ensure it is fully seated and latched. To remove battery pack (Fig. D): Depress the battery release button (7) and pull the battery pack out of the tool.

Attaching Hook and Loop Sanding Discs (Fig. E): For best results, use STANLEY FATMAX accessories.

  • The hook and loop system allows easy removal and reuse of the sanding sheet.

Sanding Sheet Tips (Fig. F):

  • Detach the two additional diamond-shaped tips (10) from the sanding sheet (9).
  • Note: The diamond-shaped tip can be reversed and replaced when worn.
  • When the front part of the tip is worn, detach it, reverse it, and press it onto the diamond-shaped pad tip (11).
  • When the whole tip is worn, remove it from the sanding base and fit a new tip.
  • Note: For optimal dust collection, ensure the correct type of sanding paper is used.

Replacing Diamond Shaped Pad Tip (Fig. G): When the sanding base tip (11) is worn, it can be replaced. Spare parts are available from your dealer.

  • Remove the screw (13).
  • Replace the worn part.
  • Fit and tighten the screw.

Usage:

Warning! Allow the tool to work at its own pace. Do not overload it.

Switching On and Off:

  • To switch on, push the on/off switch (1) to the "I" position.
  • To switch off, push the on/off switch (1) to the "O" position.

Variable-Speed Dial: To operate the tool, select the desired speed setting with the variable-speed dial (8) and press the on/off switch. Speed can be adjusted whether the tool is on or off. Warning! Since the tool has a separate speed dial, it will start at the speed set on the dial. Always ensure the switch is in the "O" position before installing the battery pack. Warning! Select the correct speed for your sanding task. If unsure, test at a low speed and gradually increase until comfortable.

Operation (Fig. H): Grip the sander as shown in Figure H and switch it on. Move it in long, sweeping strokes over the surface, letting the tool do the work. Pressing down on the tool during sanding reduces removal rate and lowers finish quality. Check your work frequently. The sander can remove material quickly, especially with coarse paper.

Precautions When Sanding Paint: Sanding lead-based paint is NOT RECOMMENDED due to difficulty controlling contaminated dust. The greatest danger of lead poisoning is to children and pregnant women. Since it's difficult to identify lead without chemical analysis, follow these precautions for all paint sanding: Personal Safety: Children and pregnant women should not enter the work area until cleanup is complete. All persons entering the work area must wear a dust mask or respirator (EN14683 approved); replace the filter daily or when breathing becomes difficult. DO NOT EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE in the work area to avoid ingesting contaminated paint particles. Workers must wash and clean up BEFORE eating, drinking, or smoking. Food, drink, or tobacco items should not be left in the work area where dust can settle. Environmental Safety: Remove paint to minimize dust generation. Areas where paint is removed must be sealed with 4-mil plastic sheeting. Sanding must be done to reduce paint dust transfer outside the work area. Cleaning and Disposal: All work area surfaces must be vacuumed and thoroughly cleaned daily throughout the sanding project. Vacuum filter bags must be changed frequently. Plastic drop cloths must be collected and disposed of with dust, chips, and other debris in sealed waste containers according to normal waste disposal procedures. Keep children and pregnant women away during cleanup. All toys, washable furniture, and utensils used by children must be thoroughly cleaned before reuse.

Dust Collection (Fig. I, J):

Warning! Sanding dust from polyurethane, linseed oil, etc., coatings can self-ignite and cause fire. To reduce risk, strictly follow the sander manual and coating manufacturer's instructions.

  • The dust bag must be emptied every 10 minutes of sanding.
  • To attach the dust bag to the sander, align the grooves (14) on the side collar (15) of the dust bag with the tabs (16) on the dust port (17).
  • Slide the dust bag onto the dust port and twist it clockwise to lock it in place (Fig. I).
  • To remove, twist the dust bag counter-clockwise and slide it off.
  • To empty the dust bag, remove it from the dust port and empty the sanding debris into an appropriate waste container (Fig. J).

Connecting a Vacuum Cleaner: Insert the vacuum hose into the dust port (17).
