How to troubleshoot a Sterling GP Chiller that does not run?
    • L
      Lisa HunterJul 29, 2025
If your Sterling Chiller unit isn't running, several factors could be at play. First, ensure the unit is receiving power by checking the main disconnect, fuses, wiring, and power lead. Verify that the voltage supplied is within plus or minus 10% of the nameplate rating. Also, inspect the on/off switch and replace if defective. Examine the control circuit fuse and replace it if blown. Check the transformer and look for a short circuit. Replace the control transformer if it's defective. Ensure the piping flow switch circuit is not open by adding water or a water/glycol solution if needed. Finally, check if the pump motor is off due to an overload; if so, reset and test it.

Why is the water temperature too high in my Sterling GP Chiller?
    • S
      Sean WattsAug 2, 2025
If the water temperature in your Sterling Chiller is too high, there are a few things to check. First, ensure that the water/glycol mixture is adequate for your process. Next, verify that the leaving fluid temperature, warning, or fault set point is properly set and adjust if necessary. Finally, a low refrigerant charge could be the cause, in which case you should call a service technician to find and repair the leak, and then add refrigerant.

What to do if Sterling GP runs continuously but has weak cooling?
    • M
      Marcus MorrisAug 6, 2025
If your Sterling Chiller runs continuously but doesn't provide enough cooling, start by cleaning the filters to address restricted condenser airflow. Clean the condenser. Check the refrigerant charge to ensure the unit isn't low on refrigerant. If these steps don't resolve the issue, the compressor may not be operating efficiently, requiring a service call. It's also possible that the unit is undersized for the application, in which case you should contact a sales representative.

Why is the compressor not running on my Sterling GP Chiller, but the pump is?
    • D
      David FitzpatrickAug 10, 2025
If the pump in your Sterling Chiller runs but the compressor doesn't, start by lowering the leaving fluid temperature below the desired leaving temperature. If that doesn't work, the leaving fluid sensor High/Low thermostat may be defective and need replacement. Allow the compressor time to cool and reset, then check for high/low voltage, ensuring it's within plus or minus 10% of the nameplate rating. Check for open fuses and loose compressor electrical connections. The compressor contactor holding coil might be open, requiring repair or replacement. Similarly, a defective compressor auxiliary contact will need repair or replacement. Lastly, look for and repair any broken wires in the compressor control circuit.

What causes short cycling of the compressor in a Sterling GP?
    • C
      Christopher BrownAug 14, 2025
If the pump runs, but the compressor cycles at short intervals in your Sterling Chiller, first clean the plugged Y-strainer. If that doesn't solve the issue, the hot gas may not be coming on, requiring replacement of the relay board on the control board hot gas coil. Also, low water flow could be the problem, so install a bypass between the to-and-from process line.

How do I fix low pump pressure in my Sterling GP Chiller?
    • B
      berrystephanieAug 19, 2025
If the pump pressure is low in your Sterling Chiller, verify the pump rotation. If it's running in reverse, reverse any two main power leads and re-verify for correct pump rotation. Also, check for any foreign matter in the system and clean it.

What causes high pump pressure in a Sterling GP?
    • J
      Jeffrey GainesAug 23, 2025
If the pump pressure is too high in your Sterling Chiller, it is likely due to restricted water flow. Check for partially closed valves and ensure all lines are properly sized.
