Fault:
Engine not starting
Possible cause:
– On / Off switch not operated
– Feed chute not properly closed - safety 
cut-off switch actuated (safety interlock)
– Blocked blade disc
– No fuel in tank; blocked fuel line
– GH 460 C: Tank ventilation screw 
closed
– Inferior, dirty or old fuel in tank
– Spark plug socket detached from spark 
plug; ignition lead not properly fastened 
to socket
– Dirty air filter
– Dirty or damaged spark plug; incorrect 
electrode gap
Remedy:
– Operate On / Off switch (Ö 8.1)
– Close feed chute properly and fasten 
(tighten On / Off switch) (Ö 7.5)
– Remove shredder deposits from 
housing (IMPORTANT: Detach spark 
plug socket)
– Top up fuel; clean fuel line (Ö 7.8)
– Start machine in accordance with 
instructions (GH 460 C: open tank 
ventilation screw) (Ö 11.1)
– Always use fresh, good quality fuel, 
normal unleaded petrol; clean 
carburettor (Ö 7.8)
– Connect spark plug socket; check 
connection between ignition lead and 
socket  
– Clean air filter  
– Clean or replace spark plug; adjust 
electrode gap  
Fault:
Engine overheating
Possible cause:
– Dirty cooling ribs
– Oil level in engine too low
– Surface of engine covered with 
shredded material
Remedy:
– Clean cooling ribs (Ö 12.1)
– Top up engine oil (Ö 7.8)
– Remove shredded material from the 
engine
Fault:
Excessive vibration during operation
Possible cause:
– Faulty blade disc or blades
– Loose engine mounting
Remedy:
– Check blade discs, blades, blade shaft, 
screws, nuts, washers and bearings of 
cutting unit, repair if necessary 
– Tighten engine mounting bolts 
Fault:
Starting problems or deteriorating engine 
power
Possible cause:
– Shredding material in housing
– Water in fuel tank and carburettor; 
carburettor blocked
– GH 460 C: Tank ventilation screw 
closed or not fully open
– Contaminated fuel tank
– Dirty air filter
– Dirty spark plug
Remedy:
– Remove shredder deposits from 
housing (detach spark plug socket) 
(Ö 12.1)
– Empty fuel tank,  clean fuel line and 
carburettor 
– GH 460 C: Start machine in 
accordance with instructions (open tank 
ventilation screw) (Ö 11.1)
– Clean fuel tank  
– Clean air filter  
– Clean spark plug  
Fault:
Reduced shredding performance
Possible cause:
– Blunt blades
– Incorrectly ground blades
– Bent blade disc
Remedy:
– Re-sharpen or replace blades (Ö 12.8) 
– Sharpen blades correctly (Ö 12.8) 
– Visually inspect blade disc and replace 
if necessary (Ö 12.3)
Fault:
Shredding material is not drawn in
Possible cause:
– Blunt or incorrectly ground blades
– Gap between the two blades (hard 
material blade disc)
– Blade cover not removed
Remedy:
– Regrind blade and ensure sharpening 
angle is exactly correct  (Ö 12.8)
– Install blades onto the hard material 
blade disc without a gap (Ö 12.7)
– Remove blade cover (Ö 7.3)
