Overview

The document provides installation instructions for Stromberg Carlson RV Bunk Ladders, specifically models LA-460, LA-460B, LA-466, and LA-466B. These ladders are designed to provide safe and reliable access to bunk beds in recreational vehicles.

Function Description:

The Stromberg Carlson RV Bunk Ladder serves as a means of ingress and egress for bunk beds within an RV. It is designed for durability and ease of installation, offering two primary mounting methods: over-the-rail attachment using large hooks or side-mount attachment to a structural surface using small hooks and mounting brackets. The ladder's design emphasizes stability and proper angling for safe use.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: LA-460, LA-460B, LA-466, LA-466B.
  • Lengths: The ladders are available in two primary lengths: 60 inches and 66 inches.
  • Mounting Options:
    • Over-the-rail: Utilizes large hooks that fit over the top of a bunk rail.
    • Side-mount: Utilizes small hooks and mounting bracket assemblies that attach to a structural surface.
  • Mounting Bracket Spacing (Side-mount): The mounting brackets should be installed 11 inches horizontally from centerline to centerline.
  • Recommended Angle: The ladder is designed to be installed at no more than an 11-degree angle from vertical. This translates to a specific horizontal distance from the ladder legs (resting on the floor) to the bunk rail:
    • For 60-inch ladders: Approximately 12.011 inches.
    • For 66-inch ladders: Approximately 13.156 inches.
  • Construction: The ladder components include the main ladder body, large hooks, small hooks, mounting bolts, screws, and mounting bracket assemblies.
  • Hardware: The kit includes all necessary hardware for installation, such as (4) screws, (2) small hooks, and (2) mounting bracket assemblies, in addition to the (2) large hooks and (2) mounting bolts pre-attached to the ladder.

Usage Features:

  • Versatile Mounting: Users can choose between an over-the-rail mount for quick setup or a more permanent side-mount to a structural support, depending on their RV's bunk design and personal preference.
  • Pre-assembled for Convenience: The bunk ladder comes with large hooks and mounting bolts already attached, facilitating immediate over-the-rail installation if desired.
  • Adjustable for Optimal Angle: For side-mount installations where the ladder's angle might exceed the recommended 11 degrees from vertical, the ladder feet can be removed, and the bottom tubing can be trimmed to achieve the correct angle and maintain warranty validity. This feature ensures the ladder can be adapted to various RV bunk configurations while adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Clear Installation Steps: The manual provides a step-by-step guide, making the installation process straightforward for the user. It includes instructions for both mounting methods.
  • Safety Emphasis: The instructions explicitly highlight the importance of installing the ladder at the correct angle to prevent damage and maintain the manufacturer's limited warranty. This ensures user safety and product longevity.
  • Required Tools: Only basic tools are needed for installation: a #2 Phillips screwdriver, a tape measure, and a pencil, making it accessible for most RV owners.

Maintenance Features:

  • Durable Construction: While not explicitly detailed in terms of maintenance, the emphasis on "many years of trouble-free service" suggests a robust design.
  • Proper Installation for Longevity: Adhering to the specified installation angle (no more than 11 degrees from vertical) is crucial for preventing damage to the ladder and bunk, thereby extending its lifespan and ensuring continued safe operation. Incorrect installation will invalidate the manufacturer's limited warranty, implying that proper setup is a key aspect of long-term maintenance.
  • Component Replacement (Implied): Although not directly stated, the modular nature of the components (hooks, brackets, bolts, screws) suggests that individual parts could potentially be replaced if damaged, though this would likely be handled through customer service or warranty claims.
  • Inspection: While not explicitly mentioned as a maintenance step, regular inspection of the ladder's attachment points and overall condition would be prudent to ensure continued safety and stability, especially given its use in a mobile environment. The instructions implicitly encourage this by detailing how to properly secure the ladder.

In summary, the Stromberg Carlson RV Bunk Ladder is a practical and adaptable accessory for RVs, designed with user safety and ease of installation in mind. Its key features include versatile mounting options, adjustable length for optimal angling, and clear instructions to ensure proper setup and long-term reliability.
