natural sunlight, overexposure can cause eye and skin injury and
allergic reactions. Repeated exposure may cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.
WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR; FAILURE TO MAY RESULT IN SEVERE BURNS OR
LONGTERM INJURY TO THE EYES. Medications or cosmetics may increase your sensitivity
to the ultraviolet radiation. Consult physician before using sunlamp if you are using medications
or have a history of skin problems or believe yourself especially sensitive to sunlight. If you do
not tan in the sun, you are unlikely to tan from the use of this product. Children, the elderly, or
fair skinned people who always burn easily and either never tan or tan minimally should not use
this equipment.
To use, lie down under canopy and pull down as far as adjustment will allow. Do not use without
clear plastic panel and wire grill in place. Untanned persons should not tan on consecutive days
during their first week of tanning. Never tan more than once a day.Tanning normally appears after
the first few sessions and maximizes after approximately four weeks. Tan once or twice per week
thereafter to maintain appearance. Persons already having a base tan may begin at advanced
levels corresponding to the extent of their base tan.
Skin Type:
I Sensitive Skin (Burns easily and severely and does not tan.)
II Light Skin (Burns easily and severely and tans minimally.)
III Normal Skin (Burns moderately and tans average.)
IV Dark Skin (Burns minimally, tans easily and above average.)
New lamps emit approximately 10% more ultraviolet radiation during the first 50 hours of
operation. Recommended tanning times should therefore be reduced by approximately 10%
during that period.

Overview

This document describes the 16 XS POWER sunbed, a device designed for personal tanning.

Function Description

The 16 XS POWER is a sunbed that uses ultraviolet (UV) radiation for tanning. It consists of a bench and a canopy, both equipped with UV lamps. The device is intended for individual use and operates by exposing the user to controlled UV light to stimulate melanin production in the skin, resulting in a tan. It features a timer to control exposure duration and gas springs to assist in opening and closing the canopy.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Source: 120V AC.
  • Electrical Outlet: Requires a NEMA 5-20R electrical outlet on a dedicated 20 Amp circuit.
  • Lamps: Certified for use with X-Power Wolff® Model XP71-T12-100W BI PIN, XS-Power Wolff® Model XSP71-T12-100W BI PIN, and XS-Power Dual Twister™ Voltarc® Model XSPDT71-T12-100W BI PIN lamps.
  • Maximum Exposure Time: 20 minutes.
  • UV Radiation: New lamps emit approximately 10% more UV radiation during the first 50 hours of operation.
  • Ambient Room Temperature: Maximum 80°F for optimal cooling.
  • Safety Standards: Conforms to performance standards for sun lamp products under 21 CFR PART 1040.20 and ANSI/UL Standard 482.

Usage Features

  • Skin Type-Based Exposure: Provides recommended exposure times in minutes based on four skin types: Sensitive, Light, Normal, and Dark.
    • Sensitive Skin: Not recommended for tanning.
    • Light Skin: Starts at 4 minutes (Level 1/Week 1) and progresses to 20 minutes (Level 5).
    • Normal Skin: Starts at 6 minutes (Level 1/Week 1) and progresses to 20 minutes (Level 5).
    • Dark Skin: Starts at 8 minutes (Level 1/Week 1) and progresses to 20 minutes (Level 5).
  • Timer Control: Features a dial timer to set desired exposure duration. Lamps turn on when the dial is moved from "0" and automatically turn off when the timer reaches "0".
  • Backup Shut-off Timer: Equipped with a backup timer that automatically turns off the sunbed if the primary timer malfunctions, preventing overexposure. This safety feature also prevents resetting the timer before the pre-set maximum time interval ends.
  • Protective Eyewear: Users must wear provided safety goggles or equivalent eyewear (as defined under 21 CFR 1040.20) during operation.
  • Canopy Adjustment: The canopy can be lowered to position it as close as possible to the user's body for best results.
  • Pre-Tanning Preparation: Skin should be free of cosmetics, tanning oils, or other body lotions (unless specifically made for tanning devices). Treated hair should be kept from contacting sunbed surfaces, ideally by wearing a shower cap or towel.
  • Initial Tanning Schedule: Untanned persons should not tan on consecutive days during their first week. Never tan more than once a day. Tanning normally appears after the first few sessions and maximizes after approximately four weeks. To maintain a tan, users can tan once or twice per week. Individuals with a base tan can start at advanced levels.
  • Installation: The sunbed requires assembly, including attaching stand legs, hinge brackets, and gas springs. The canopy connects to the bench via a power cord. The unit must be earth grounded.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning After Each Use: Clean and disinfect the bench and canopy after each use using a non-abrasive disinfectant cleaner that does not contain ammonia or ammonia derivatives. Spray the acrylic lightly and wipe dry with a clean soft cloth. Wipe the canopy grill with a soft cloth slightly dampened with disinfectant.
  • Thorough Periodic Cleaning: Due to dust buildup from cooling fans, the inside of the bench and canopy should be thoroughly cleaned when dust is observed. This involves removing the acrylic shield, metal grill, and lamps. Lamps should be wiped with a soft cloth, and both sides of the acrylic shield and grill cleaned with a non-ammonia disinfectant cleaner. Reflectors should be wiped with a clean damp cloth. After cleaning, reinstall lamps, acrylic shield, and grill.
  • Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the unit's mechanical integrity every 400-500 hours of use. This includes verifying fasteners are firmly in place (especially hinge bolts), checking gas springs for wear (replace if they don't hold the canopy open), and inspecting the AC power cord and connections.
  • Acrylic Shield Replacement: Replace the acrylic if it is broken, cracked, or badly scratched. The acrylic shield in the bench and metal grill in the canopy are secured by hinged profiles. To remove, pry up the inside edge of the profile until it releases, then slide the acrylic shield out.
  • Lamp Replacement: Lamps should be changed after approximately 800-1000 hours of use to ensure maximum tanning effectiveness. Lamp starters should also be replaced whenever lamps are replaced. To remove a lamp, grasp one end and the middle, turn it a quarter turn, then gently remove. To reinstall, insert pins into slots, then turn a quarter turn.
  • Timer System Check: Annually, or when re-lamping, check the timer's operation and accuracy. This involves setting the timer to maximum and measuring how long the lamps remain on (should be within +/- 10% of maximum interval) and checking the electronic time limiting circuit's function.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues such as the sunbed not tanning (clean sunbed, replace lamps/acrylic), lamps failing to light (check AC power, connections, timer dial), canopy not staying up (lubricate/replace gas springs), and sunbed not staying lit (check AC power, timer system).
