Why is the compost in my Sun-Mar Plumbing Product too wet?
    • G
      George AnthonyAug 2, 2025
If your Sun-Mar Plumbing Product's compost is too wet, it could be due to poor compost porosity, often caused by using too much peat moss. This compacts the compost, prevents drainage, and reduces airflow. Immediately improve porosity by adding about 1/2 gallon (2 liters) of wood shavings (not anti-bacterial). For ongoing maintenance, switch to Compost Sure Blue or 100% wood shavings as your bulking material.

How to get rid of flies in my Sun-Mar Plumbing Product?
    • C
      charles55Aug 7, 2025
If flies are present in your Sun-Mar Plumbing Product, it may be because the compost is too dry. Keep the compost moist. To determine the correct moisture level, shine a flashlight into the drum; the compost should have a slight gloss or shine. Another reason may be that the compost is anaerobic. If the compost smells, refer to 'Compost Remediation'. Anaerobic compost will attract flies and reduce the performance of your composting unit.

Why is the compost in my Sun-Mar Plumbing Product too dry?
    • C
      Curtis BennettAug 12, 2025
If the compost in your Sun-Mar Plumbing Product is too dry, it could be due to several reasons. It may be that moisture isn't being added periodically, especially in cottage units, or the toilet isn't being used for urination. Insufficient microbes or a room temperature below 60F/15C can also cause dryness. Insufficient bulking material or not enough peat moss may also be the cause. Add 1/2 to 1 gallon (2-4 liters) of warm water to bring it up to the appropriate moisture level. Add Sun-Mar Microbe Mix. Install a heat source to increase the temperature above 55-60F/15C if the toilet is used regularly. Use the toilet for urination and add the correct bulking material.

How to handle effluent from my Sun-Mar Plumbing Product?
    • M
      meganmartinAug 17, 2025
To handle effluent from your Sun-Mar Plumbing Product, you can use a container that is emptied periodically, such as a water jug or small barrel, to ensure a closed-loop system. Alternatively, you can feed the effluent into a lined pit filled with gravel and sand, creating a recycling bed that also ensures a closed-loop system. Other options include feeding it into a small cesspit or 'french drain', or plumbing it into an existing septic or holding tank line, following local regulations.

What to do if the vent stack of my Sun-Mar Plumbing Product has too many bends?
    • K
      Kenneth MoodyAug 23, 2025
If the 2” vent stack of your Sun-Mar Plumbing Product has too many bends or horizontal lengths, re-install the vent stack to reduce the number of bends or eliminate horizontal lengths. You can also install fresh air intakes on any competing appliances. To check ventilation, hold a lighter up to the air intake holes on the back of the unit; air should be drawn in. If not, check the venting and provide more ventilation to the room. Install the vent with minimal bends (total bends should equal no more than 360 degrees) and NO horizontal or downward slopes.

How to unclog the drum screen in my Sun-Mar Plumbing Product?
    • B
      Brittany SimmonsAug 27, 2025
To address a clogged drum screen in your Sun-Mar Plumbing Product, remove the finishing drawer to find the drum screen to the left of the opening. Spray the drum screen with Compost Quick and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, use a long-handled wire brush to vigorously scrub the drum screen.
