The Sunbeam Alinea Select Temperature Select Kettle is designed to boil quality drinking water and offers precise temperature control for various beverages. Its primary function is to heat water to specific temperatures, ranging from 80°C to 100°C, catering to different tea types, coffee, and hot chocolate. The kettle features a 360° rotational power base with cord storage, allowing for easy placement and use from any angle.
The kettle is operated by placing it on its power base and selecting the desired temperature using the touch-sensitive buttons. The base unit includes dedicated buttons for common beverage temperatures such as Green Tea (80°C), White Tea (85°C), Oolong Tea (90°C), Coffee (95°C), and a Just Boil (100°C) option. When a temperature is selected, the corresponding button illuminates, and the heating process begins.
A unique feature is the countdown timer located on the base, which indicates the remaining time until the water reaches the selected temperature. During heating, the stop button, water level window, and the selected temperature button illuminate. As the water heats up, the temperature buttons illuminate sequentially, providing a visual indication of the water's current temperature. Once the target temperature is reached, the kettle plays a short tune and the illumination flashes to signal readiness. This audio alert can be muted if preferred, by holding down the stop button for 3 seconds.
The kettle automatically switches off once the selected temperature is achieved or if it is removed from the base during operation. Users can also manually stop the heating process at any time by pressing the stop button. After reaching the selected temperature, the kettle continues to monitor the water temperature. If the water temperature drops below 80°C, the base unit enters standby mode.
A notable feature is the "Lower Temperature Select Mode," which allows users to set a temperature lower than the current water temperature while the kettle is cooling. For example, if the kettle has boiled and is at 100°C, a user can select 90°C, and the kettle will indicate when the water has cooled to that temperature.
The kettle incorporates Sunbeam's 3-Way Safety System. This system ensures the kettle automatically switches off after boiling for convenience, safety, and energy efficiency. It also includes a boil-dry protection cut-out, which automatically switches off the kettle if it operates without sufficient water, preventing damage to the heating element. In case of overheating, the kettle will shut down to prevent further damage, requiring servicing by an authorized agent.
For optimal energy saving, the manual advises boiling only the necessary amount of water and heating it only to the temperature required for the chosen beverage. It also notes that reboiling is not always necessary, as water can retain heat for a significant period.
Regular cleaning and descaling are crucial for maintaining the kettle's performance and extending its lifespan. The manual emphasizes disconnecting the kettle from the power outlet before any cleaning. It warns against immersing the switch area, cord, or power base in water.
Descaling is particularly important to remove mineral deposits (lime scale and phosphate scale) that can solidify in tap water. Failure to descale regularly may be deemed negligent handling and can void the 12-month guarantee. Sunbeam Liquid Descaler is recommended for this purpose. Alternatively, a mixture of white vinegar and water can be used: fill the kettle with one cup of white vinegar and the rest with water, let it stand overnight (without boiling), then empty and rinse thoroughly. Any remaining stains in the spout can be removed with a damp cloth. After descaling, the kettle should be filled with clean water, boiled, and discarded before use.
The concealed heating element, made of non-corrosive stainless steel, may accumulate scale over time, appearing as discolouration resembling rust. This is not rust and can be cleaned with a Scotchbrite® scourer or similar abrasive cleaning cream, followed by thorough rinsing with tap water.
For cleaning the exterior, a soft, lint-free damp cloth is recommended, followed by polishing with a soft dry cloth. Users are cautioned against using polishing agents, chemicals, steel wool, or abrasive cleaning products, as these can damage the paintwork and finish.
The mesh filter, located behind the spout, also requires cleaning. Before removing or refitting the filter, the kettle must be switched off, emptied, and allowed to cool completely, with the power base unplugged. The filter can be removed by grasping its top and pulling upwards, then washed in warm soapy water, dried thoroughly, and replaced. The manual explicitly states not to operate the kettle without the filter fitted. When cleaning, alkaline cleaning agents should be avoided; instead, a soft cloth and mild detergent are recommended to prevent damage to the appliance.
