Overview

This document describes the SunDING SD-558C cycling computer, a device designed to track various riding metrics and provide useful information to cyclists.

Device Overview

The SD-558C is a comprehensive cycling computer that comes with a main computer unit and several accessories for installation and operation. The package includes:

  1. Computer Unit: The main display and processing unit.
  2. Mounting Shoe: Secures the computer to the handlebar.
  3. Fixed Shoe: Provides a stable base for the mounting shoe.
  4. Sponge Sticker: Used for cushioning and secure fitting.
  5. Fixed Rings: For additional securing.
  6. Connection Bar: Connects components.
  7. Bridge Bar: Another connection component.
  8. Magnet Cover: Protects the magnet.
  9. Lock Bar: For securing parts.
  10. Ties: Used for fastening components to the bicycle.
  11. CR2032 Battery: Powers the computer.
  12. Magnet: Attaches to the wheel spoke for speed sensing.
  13. Sensor: Detects the magnet's rotation to calculate speed.

Installation

The installation process involves attaching the mounting shoe, sensor, and magnet to the bicycle. The manual outlines four different ways to install the mounting shoe, with detailed illustrations for each.

Mounting Shoe Installation: The mounting shoe and fixed shoe are pre-installed with a sponge sticker. The manual illustrates four methods for installation, ensuring a secure fit on the handlebar.

Computer Installation: The computer slides onto the mounting shoe until it firmly attaches.

Sensor and Magnet Installation: The sensor attaches to the front fork using ties and a pad for stability. The magnet attaches to a wheel spoke. Crucially, the sensor and magnet must be installed on the same side of the fork, with a distance of less than 60cm between them. The arrow on the sensor should point towards the magnet, and the distance between the sensor and magnet should be precisely 3mm for accurate readings. For wired control versions (SD-558A), the wired control button attaches to the handlebar using ties through slots under the button.

Battery Installation: To install the CR2032 battery, remove the battery cover from the bottom of the computer using a flat blade screwdriver. Insert the battery with the positive (+) pole facing the battery cover, then close the cover.

Functions

The SD-558C offers a wide array of functions to track and display various cycling data:

  • SPD (Current Speed): Real-time speed, accurate to +/-0.1km/h (m/h). Range: 0-99.9km/h (m/h).
  • ODO (Odometer): Total distance ridden (0-9999km/m). Resets to zero if value exceeds range.
  • DST (Trip Distance): Distance of a single trip (0-9999km/m). Resets to zero if value exceeds range.
  • MAX (Maximum Speed): Highest speed achieved during a single trip.
  • AVS (Average Speed): Average speed of a single trip.
  • TTM (Total Trip Time): Total time ridden from the beginning (0-99:59:59). Resets to zero if value exceeds range.
  • TM (Trip Time): Duration of a single trip.
  • RAT (Riding All Time): Total riding time from the beginning (0-9999 Hrs).
  • CLK (Clock): 12H/24H format.
  • SW (Stopwatch): Start, freeze, and reset stopwatch function.
  • Th (Temperature): Current outdoor temperature (-20~70°C / -4~158°F).
  • TM UP (Trip Time Up): Counts trip time upwards.
  • TM DN (Trip Time Down): Counts trip time downwards from a set value.
  • TRIP UP (Trip Distance Up): Counts trip distance upwards.
  • TRIP DN (Trip Distance Down): Counts trip distance downwards from a set value.
  • COMPARATOR: Indicates if current speed is higher (▲) or lower (▼) than average speed.
  • SETTING SPEED SCALE: Allows selection between km/h and m/h.
  • MAINTENANCE ALERT: Flashes when ODO exceeds 300KM.
  • MACHINE OIL REMAINDER: Flashes when ODO exceeds 300KM.
  • LOW BATTERY INDICATOR: Alerts when battery is low.
  • SETTING TYRE CIRCUMFERENCE: Allows input of wheel circumference for accurate speed/distance calculation.
  • SETTING THE LAST VALUE OF ODOMETER: Enables setting a starting ODO value.
  • FREEZE FRAME MEMORY: Freezes DST, TTM, and SPD data for review.
  • SIGNAL INTERFERENCE-RESISTANCE: Designed to minimize external signal interference.
  • AUTO BACK LIGHT: Automatically turns on in low light conditions.
  • EVER-BRIGHTENING BACK LIGHT: Keeps backlight on continuously.
  • SMART BACK LIGHT: Intelligent backlight control.
  • SLEEP MODE: Automatically enters sleep mode after 300 seconds of inactivity.
  • WIRELESS WAKE UP: Automatically wakes up from sleep mode when activity is detected.

Computer Settings

The computer offers various settings accessible through different modes and button presses.

Temperature Setting (°C / °F): In INQUIRY MODE, press SET for 3 seconds to enter DATA SETTING MODE. Use UP to choose °C or °F, then SET to confirm and enter CLOCK SETTING MODE.

12/24 Clock Setting: Press UP to switch between 12/24 hour modes. Press SET to confirm and enter HOUR setting. Use UP to adjust the hour, then SET to set MINUTE and SECOND, adjusting with UP. Confirm with SET to enter WHEEL SIZE SETTING MODE.

Wheel Size Setting & Chart: In WHEEL SIZE SETTING MODE, the default circumference is 2080mm. Refer to the provided chart for correct wheel circumference figures (e.g., 700Cx23mm = 2096mm, 26"x1.95" = 2050mm). Use UP to change figures and SET to confirm, then jump to the next figure. Range: 0-9999mm. Confirm with SET to enter (KM/H) / (M/H) SETTING MODE.

KM/H / M/H Setting: In (KM/H) / (M/H) SETTING MODE, press UP to switch between KM/H or M/H. Press SET to confirm and enter ODOMETER SETTING MODE.
