Overview

This document describes the Sun Joe Electric Hedge Trimmer (Model HJ22HTE-MAX), a 20-inch, 3.8 AMP tool designed for trimming hedges and shrubs. It emphasizes safety, proper operation, and maintenance to ensure efficient and safe use.

Function Description

The Sun Joe Electric Hedge Trimmer is designed to cut and shape hedges and shrubs. It features a dual-action cutting blade that moves back and forth to efficiently trim vegetation. The device is powered by electricity and is intended for outdoor use, requiring a suitable extension cord. Its primary function is to provide a clean and even cut for maintaining garden aesthetics and plant health. The trimmer is equipped with a safety button and an on/off switch that must be engaged simultaneously to start the tool, preventing accidental activation. An electric brake technology ensures that the blades stop within 3 seconds of releasing the trigger switch, enhancing user safety.

Usage Features

Operating the hedge trimmer requires adherence to specific safety guidelines and proper techniques. Before starting, users must ensure they are wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety goggles, ear defenders, protective gloves, and non-slip footwear. Loose clothing or jewelry should be avoided as they can get caught in moving parts. The trimmer should always be held firmly with both hands, with the cutting blades directed away from the body. Proper footing and balance are crucial to prevent overreaching and maintain control.

The device incorporates an extension cord restraint hook to prevent accidental disconnection during operation. Users are instructed to loop the extension cord through the handle and around the hook before connecting it to the appliance cord, ensuring a secure connection.

When trimming, users should avoid cutting material thicker than 0.7 inches (1.8 cm) in diameter. For new growth, a wide sweeping action is recommended to feed stems directly into the cutting blade. For older, thicker growth, a sawing movement can be used, but the trimmer should not be forced through heavy shrubs, as this can cause the blades to bind and reduce efficiency. If the blades slow down, the pace of work should be reduced. For stems or twigs thicker than 0.7 inches (1.8 cm), a non-powered hand saw or pruning saw is recommended.

For horizontal cuts, the blade should be tilted 5-10 degrees to the cutting object, and a string guide can be used to achieve a desired hedge level. Vertical cuts should start at the bottom and sweep upwards in an arc, directing cuttings to the ground.

It is critical to clear the work area of any objects such as cords, lights, wire, or loose string that could become entangled in the cutting blade and pose a risk of electric shock or personal injury. Users are warned never to cut near electric cords or power lines, and if the blade jams on an electrical cable, they must not touch the blade. Instead, they should hold the trimmer by the insulated rear handle, lay it down safely, and ensure the electrical service to the damaged cable is disconnected before attempting to free the blade.

The hedge trimmer is double-insulated, meaning it has two systems of insulation and does not require grounding. This design enhances safety by reducing the risk of electric shock. However, it means that only identical replacement parts should be used for servicing to maintain its double-insulated integrity.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the hedge trimmer's optimal performance and longevity. After each use, the hedge shears should be cleaned with a dry towel, especially the ventilation slits. For heavy soiling, a brush can be used. The blades should be sprayed with lightweight machine oil after each use to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.

Lubricating the blades before and after each use is recommended for easier operation and longer blade life. This involves stopping the motor, disconnecting the unit from the power supply, laying the trimmer on a flat surface, and applying lightweight machine oil along the edge of the top blade. If the trimmer is used for an extended period, intermittent re-oiling is advisable. It is crucial not to oil the blades while the hedge trimmer is running.

Blade sharpening is necessary if cutting performance deteriorates or blades frequently snag on branches. The process involves stopping the motor, disconnecting the power supply, and clamping the blade in a vise. A smooth round file should be used to file the exposed cutting surface of each blade tooth, maintaining the original angle. After filing, the blade is removed from the vise, and the motor is powered on briefly to expose unsharpened edges of other blade teeth, allowing for further sharpening. Users are warned not to operate the trimmer with dull or damaged cutting blades, as this can cause overload and unsatisfactory cutting results.

Cleaning the hedge trimmer's body involves using a damp cloth and mild detergent, avoiding strong detergents on plastic housing or handles, as these can be damaged by aromatic oils or solvents like kerosene.

For storage, the blade cover should always be placed on the blade to prevent accidental injury from the sharp teeth. The trimmer should be stored indoors in a dry, locked-up place, out of reach of children, and away from corrosive agents such as garden chemicals and de-icing salts.

In case of damaged parts, such as guards or cords, they should be immediately repaired or replaced by qualified service personnel using identical replacement parts. Users are advised to contact the Snow Joe customer service center for assistance with repairs or replacement parts. The manual provides a troubleshooting table for common issues like the unit not running or slow/noisy blades, offering solutions such as checking cord connections, lubricating blades, or tightening blade bolts.
