Overview

This document describes the Swan Smart Clean Carpet Washer, model SC17320N, a device designed for domestic use to remove light levels of dirt and freshen up carpets and upholstered furniture. It is also suitable for use on tiles, stone floors, and PVC. It is not intended as a substitute for a conventional vacuum cleaner, and carpets or upholstered furniture should be thoroughly vacuumed before using this device.

Function Description:

The Swan Smart Clean Carpet Washer is a 2-litre carpet washer with "Pet & Extend" features, indicating its suitability for pet-related cleaning and extended reach. It is designed to apply a cleaning solution to surfaces, brush it in, and then suck up the dirty water, leaving carpets and upholstery invigorated and fresh. The device utilizes a cleaning agent specifically formulated for carpet washers, such as Swan Dirtmaster Carpet Detergent, which kills 99.99% of bacteria and eliminates odours.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Clean Tank Capacity: 2.1 litres
  • Dirty Water Tank Capacity: 1.6 litres
  • Motor Power: 700 Watts
  • Voltage: 220-240V AC 50/60Hz
  • Cord Length: 7 metres
  • Upholstery Hose Length: 2.8 metres
  • Vacuum Power: 11KPA
  • Max Air Flow: 16.5 litres per second
  • Model Number: SC17320N

Usage Features:

The device comes with a main unit, a 2.8m upholstery nozzle with hose, a handle, a water tank, and two screws for assembly.

  • Assembly: The handle (1) is inserted into the container support (14) and secured with two screws. The fresh water container (2) is then inserted into the container support (14) until it engages. The dirty water container (8) is pre-inserted in the main unit.
  • Preparation: Before use, carpets or upholstered furniture must be thoroughly vacuumed. Large furniture items should be removed or protected with plastic film. It is crucial to check the colourfastness of the carpet or upholstery by testing the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous spot.
  • Filling the Fresh Water Container: The fresh water container (2) is removed by pressing the release lever (15) upwards. Carpet cleaning agent (e.g., Swan Dirtmaster Carpet Detergent) is poured into the container, followed by warm water (max. 40°C) up to the Max mark. The recommended ratio is typically 50ml of solution to 500ml of water, with water added first, then the solution, followed by a shake to mix. The container is then re-inserted until it engages. Only cleaning agents supplied with the device or standard carpet cleaning products for carpet cleaners should be used; avoid products that produce excessive foam.
  • Carpet Cleaning:
    1. Unwind the mains cable (4) from the hooks (10, 11) and connect it to a plug socket.
    2. Step on the pedal (13) to tilt the handle (3) towards you.
    3. Switch on the device using the On/Off switch (12).
    4. Roll the device to a corner of the carpet.
    5. Slide the device forwards along the edge of the carpet, holding down the button (17) to dispense cleaning solution. This applies the solution and brushes it in. Walk to the side to avoid treading on wet carpet. Release the button at the other end of the strip.
    6. Pull the device backwards along the same strip to suck up dirty water.
    7. Overlap strips slightly and move slowly (about half the speed of a vacuum cleaner) for effective cleaning. Repeat for stubborn dirt patches.
    8. Empty the dirty water container (8) when it reaches the Max marking.
    9. When finished or when the dirty water container needs emptying, place the device on a towel or cloth, switch it off, and return the handle to the vertical position. Remove the mains plug.
  • Upholstery Cleaning:
    1. Flip up the closure cap of the hose connection (7) and firmly attach the upholstery hose with nozzle (A).
    2. Switch on the device (12).
    3. Pull the upholstery nozzle along the edge of the furniture, holding down the button (A) on the handle of the nozzle to dispense cleaning solution. Release the button at the other end.
    4. Pull the nozzle over the same strip to suck up dirty water. Continue as with carpet cleaning.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Never leave the device unsupervised when switched on.
    • Disconnect from mains power before assembly, dismantling, filling/emptying water tanks, or cleaning.
    • Do not use if the device, cable, or plug is damaged; contact customer service for replacement.
    • Ensure the mains cable does not present a trip hazard.
    • Use only in closed rooms with a properly installed and accessible plug socket.
    • Never immerse the device, mains cable, or plug in water or other liquids. If it falls into water, switch off power immediately and do not attempt to retrieve it while connected.
    • Do not touch with wet hands when connected to mains power.
    • Store in dry indoor rooms.
    • Do not operate in damp environments or near ignitable dust/poisonous/explosive fumes.
    • Avoid rolling over the mains cable.
    • Switch off and unplug if an error occurs or before a thunderstorm.
    • Do not operate near combustible material.
    • Do not insert anything into device openings or obstruct air circulation.
    • Use only when fully assembled, with the mains cable unwound, and water containers inserted.
    • Prevent tipping to avoid water spillage.
    • Do not use sharp objects to remove foreign bodies.
    • Do not wet carpets/upholstery excessively.
    • If overheating protection activates, let the device cool for approximately 60 minutes before restarting.
    • Children aged 8 and over, and individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental abilities, or lack of experience/knowledge, may use the device if supervised and instructed on safe use, and if they understand the associated dangers. Children must not play with the device or perform cleaning/maintenance. Keep children under 8 and animals away from the device and cable.
    • The warranty does not cover faults from incorrect handling, damage, lime scale build-up, repair attempts, or normal wear and tear.

Maintenance Features:

  • After Use: Empty both water containers after each use. Allow cleaned surfaces to dry completely. Avoid treading on damp carpets; if necessary, place white or colourfast towels. Wipe away any cleaning solution that gets on wooden floors or furniture. Vacuum dry carpets/upholstery with a brush attachment if possible.
  • Cleaning the Device:
    • Always remove the mains plug before cleaning.
    • Do not use chemical cleaning agents.
    • Empty and rinse water containers before storage.
    • Cleaning Water Containers:
      1. Pull out the dirty water container (8) by pressing down its handle (3).
      2. Pull up the silicone cap (B) and pour away dirty water, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
      3. Remove the fresh water container (2), pour away remaining solution, and rinse thoroughly with warm water.
      4. Allow all parts to dry completely before reassembling.
      5. Re-insert the fresh water container (2) and then the dirty water container (8), ensuring it engages audibly.
    • Cleaning the Carpet Suction Nozzle:
      1. Flip up the closure cap of the hose connection (7).
      2. Grip the upper end of the carpet suction nozzle (6), pull it up, and remove.
      3. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
      4. Allow to dry completely, then re-insert by placing locking lugs into recesses and pressing down until it engages audibly.
    • Cleaning the Carpet Brush:
      1. Place the device on the floor to access the bottom. Ensure water containers are empty.
      2. Press together the locking device (C, D) and pull out the carpet brush (5).
      3. Rinse the carpet brush (5) thoroughly under warm, running water.
      4. Allow to dry completely, then insert back into the main unit, ensuring it is in the correct position and engages audibly.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Device not working: Check if the plug is inserted correctly, if the socket is defective (try another), check the fuse, or if the overheating protection has activated (let cool for 60 minutes).
    • Stain not removed: The stain may be too stubborn or old. Treat with a carpet cleaning product specifically with a carpet cleaning product.
