Overview

The TAC I/A Series MicroNet Sensors are wall-mounted digital temperature and humidity sensors designed for use with TAC I/A Series MicroNet Controllers. These sensors utilize the Sensor Link (S-Link) communication protocol, providing a simple two-wire interface for power and the exchange of sensor and subbase information.

Function Description:

The primary function of these sensors is to provide zone temperature and, in some models, humidity data to the controller via the S-Link. They feature integral analog-to-digital conversion to eliminate electrical interference between the sensor and controller. An optional wiring connection allows access to the TAC MicroNet LONWORKS® network (LON®) via a network jack on the left side, enabling direct connection to a PC running WorkPlace Tech Tool (WP Tech) or a third-party Network Management Tool. Additionally, an S-Link jack on the right side facilitates connection to a PDA running Pocket TAC I/A software.

Models and Features:

The sensors are available in twelve models, each offering varying levels of functionality:

  • MN-S1 / MN-S1HT: Sensor only models. The MN-S1HT adds humidity sensing. Neither has a display or keypad. They provide a LONWORKS Network Jack for commissioning, testing, and monitoring.
  • MN-S2 / MN-S2HT: Include an Override Key with an LED indicator to force the controller into timed occupied mode. The MN-S2HT adds humidity sensing. They also feature a LONWORKS Network Jack.
  • MN-S3 / MN-S3HT: Offer the same functionality as the MN-S2, but add a digital liquid crystal display (LCD) and allow controller setpoint adjustment. They provide one setpoint and one default display screen. The MN-S3HT adds humidity sensing.
  • MN-S4 / MN-S4HT: Expand upon the MN-S3 by including a Fan Key, a Mode Key, and a Setpoint Key. The keypad allows selection of controller modes, fan modes, and fan speeds. These models offer four setpoints and four display screens. The MN-S4HT adds humidity sensing.
  • MN-S4-FCS / MN-S4HT-FCS: Feature a digital LCD for setpoint adjustment and display of controller values. They include a Fan Key for On/Off/Auto settings and three Fan Speed keys (Low, Medium, High). The MN-S4HT-FCS adds humidity sensing.
  • MN-S5 / MN-S5HT: Provide the same functionality as the MN-S4, but add an Emergency Heat Key and LED for heat pump applications. They offer four setpoints and four display screens. The MN-S5HT adds humidity sensing.

Keypad and Display Features (for models with these features):

  • Override Key and LED: Forces the controller into timed occupied mode. The LED indicates override status and flashes when less than 5 minutes remain.
  • Setpoint Adjustment: Allows users to adjust controller setpoints. Models with multiple setpoint slots allow scrolling through and adjusting each.
  • Fan Operation and Speed: Enables selection of fan modes (On/Off/Auto) and speeds (Low, Medium, High).
  • Mode Selection: Allows users to select controller modes.
  • Emergency Heat Key and LED: Activates emergency heat in heat pump applications (MN-S5/MN-S5HT).
  • Digital LCD: Displays values, setpoints, controller mode functions, fan status, and override status. LCD icons indicate °F, °C, % Relative Humidity, Heat, Cool, Fan, Outdoor Air, Unoccupied, Auto, Off, On, and various fan speeds.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • S-Link Wiring: Requires at least 24 gauge (0.205 mm²) twisted pair, voice grade telephone wire. Capacitance between conductors must not exceed 32 pF per foot (0.3 m). If shielded cable is used, capacitance between any one conductor and the others (connected to the shield) must not exceed 60 pF per foot (0.3m). Maximum wire length is 200 ft. (61 m). S-Link wiring is polarity insensitive and does not require shielded cable. It can be in the same conduit as LONWORKS network wiring, UI, AO, and DI wiring, but must be dedicated to S-Link communications and not part of an active, bundled telephone trunk.
  • LONWORKS Network Wiring: An approved Category 4 or 5, twisted-pair cable can be used. LONWORKS network wiring is polarity insensitive and does not require shielded cable. It can be in the same conduit as S-Link wiring but must be dedicated to LONWORKS network communications and not mixed with UI, DI, AO, DO, or power types of wiring. If shielded wire is used, the shield must be connected to earth ground at only one end by a 470 K ohm 1/4 watt resistor. Wiring must be run in a daisy-chain fashion, not using wire "spurs."
  • Operating Environment: Avoid locations with excessive moisture, corrosive fumes, vibration, or explosive vapors. Ambient temperatures should not exceed 122 °F (50 °C) or fall below 32 °F (0 °C). Relative humidity should not exceed 95% or fall below 5%, non-condensing.
  • Humidity Sensing Element (MN-SxHT and MN-S4HT-FCS models): Recovers from short-term exposure to liquid water or condensation, but repeated exposure will degrade performance. Do not touch the humidity sensing element.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting: Suitable for direct-wall, 2 x 4 electrical box, 1/4 DIN electrical box, or surface box mounting.
  • Wiring: The sensor comes disassembled into a pre-wirable base plate, an electronic assembly, and a removable cover. Connections for S-Link (terminals 1 and 2) and optional LON (terminals 3 and 4) are made to the base plate.
  • Sensor Operation Diagnostics: For models with displays (MN-S3, MN-S3HT, MN-S4, MN-S4HT, MN-S4-FCS, MN-S4HT-FCS, MN-S5, or MN-S5HT), a Diagnostics Mode allows viewing of Subnet Address, Node Address, Alarms, and Errors. Temperature Offset and Relative Humidity Offset values are adjustable.
  • Display Screen Functions: Models with multiple display screen slots (MN-S4, MN-S4HT, MN-S5, MN-S5HT) allow scrolling through different screens to view various data.
  • Override Functions: The Override Key allows overriding unoccupied mode settings to occupied mode. It can also re-initialize or cancel the override time.
  • Service Pin: Pressing and holding the Override key for eight seconds commands the connected controller to send its service pin to the LONWORKS Network.
  • Wink Mode: MN-Sx sensors flash the red Override Status LED (1/2 second ON, 1/2 second OFF) while the connected controller is in wink mode (approximately 12 seconds).

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided for common issues such as a blank LCD, "Abn" display, or all LCD icons remaining lit. Corrective actions include checking wiring, power, downloading new applications, and verifying sensor/controller compatibility.
  • Static Precautions: Emphasized during installation and servicing to prevent damage to electronic components. This includes working in a static-free area, discharging static electricity, and using a wrist strap.
  • Field Repair: Components within TAC I/A Series MicroNet Sensors are not field repairable. In case of a problem, users are instructed to contact their local TAC office after performing initial checks and recording hardware setup details.
