Overview

The PRO/pak Portable Multi-Purpose Foam System is a versatile eductor-type foam application appliance designed for firefighting and emergency response. It is intended for use by trained and qualified emergency services personnel who have completed an approved course of education. The system is capable of applying foam concentrates for both Class A and Class B fires, offering flexibility for various fire suppression scenarios.

Function Description:

The PRO/pak system operates by eductor technology, mixing foam concentrate with water to create a foam solution. It can be used for direct extinguishment, overhaul, and wetting of fuels in Class A fires (wood, paper, combustible materials). For Class B fires (flammable liquids), its primary purpose is vapor suppression. The system is designed to be portable, allowing for easy deployment and maneuverability in the field. It features a percentage knob for adjusting foam concentrate ratios, a twist-grip flow control for water flow, and quick-connect fittings for attaching various nozzles and hoses.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Rated Flow: 12 GPM at 100 PSI (45 L/MIN at 7.0 BAR)
  • Minimum Operating Condition: 7 GPM at 40 PSI (30 L/MIN at 3 BAR)
  • Maximum Operating Condition: 27 GPM at 500 PSI (100 L/MIN at 40 BAR)
  • Tank Capacity (to bottom of fill port): 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters)
  • Weight Empty: 11.5 lbs (5.2 kg)
  • Weight Full: 30.1 lbs (13.6 kg)
  • Dimensions (Length x Width x Height): 13.5" x 10.75" x 17" (345mm x 275mm x 430mm)
  • Operating Pressure Max/Min: 500/40 PSI (40/3 BAR)
  • Additive Settings:
    • Class A Range: OFF, 0.1% to 1.0% continuously adjustable
    • Class B Range: OFF, 1%, 3%, 6%
  • Nozzle Reach (at 100 PSI / 6.8 BAR):
    • Straight Stream Nozzle: 50 feet (15 meters)
    • Low Expansion Nozzle: 37 feet (11 meters)
    • Medium Expansion Nozzle: 9 feet (3 meters)

The PRO/pak is calibrated for 20 Centipoise Class A foam concentrates on its green side and National Foam's Universal Gold® AFFF concentrate on its red Class B side. It is important to note that actual foam concentrations may vary with changes in water flow, foam concentrate temperature, and viscosity.

Usage Features:

  • Hose Connection: Attaches to an inlet fire hose, with 1" hose recommended for maximum maneuverability.
  • Filling the Tank: The tank is filled by unscrewing the fill port lid and filling to the bottom of the port. Overfilling may cause agent to seep out of vents.
  • Nozzle Connection: Nozzles can be attached directly to the quick-connect fitting on the control block or to an outlet hose connected to the control block. The system supports Straight Stream, Low Expansion, Medium Expansion, and optional Piercing Nozzles.
  • Concentration Setting: A percentage knob allows for selecting the desired foam concentrate type and percentage. The knob has two sides, one for Class A and one for Class B foams. It can be set to "OFF" for water-only use.
  • Flow Control: A twist-grip valve controls water flow through the PRO/pak. Flow can be reduced by partially closing the valve.
  • Left or Right Hand Operation: The Control Block and Valve Assembly can be reconfigured for either left or right-hand operation by removing pull pins and rotating the control unit.
  • Foam Quality: For the Medium Expansion Nozzle, foam quality depends on solution velocity. Partially closing the flow control valve may be necessary to achieve a coherent, continuous rope-like foam stream.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes understanding the manual and proper training before use. It warns against using incorrect concentration ratios, mixing different agent types, and using the equipment without adequate foam supply in hazardous situations. It also advises against directing agent onto faces and stresses the importance of wearing appropriate PPE.

Maintenance Features:

  • Flushing After Use: After each use, the PRO/pak should be flushed with water to prevent agent concentrate from drying out in the Control Block and Percentage Knob. This involves removing the nozzle/hose, control unit, and cap, then allowing clean water to flow through the pickup tube while rotating the percentage knob to flush all passages.
  • Cleaning if Plugged: If the system becomes plugged, the screw, spring, and knob can be removed to inspect and clear agent passages and holes in the control block. Pull pins can be removed to clean the pickup tube.
  • Drain Hole (Optional): For users who frequently switch between different agent concentrates, an optional drain hole can be drilled and tapped in the left front ear of the tank for easier emptying.
  • Storage: The PRO/pak can be stored with agent concentrate in it, provided the control block and valve assembly are mounted on the tank and the fill port is securely closed to prevent evaporation. Upright storage is recommended to avoid leaks.
  • Agent Compatibility: Users are warned against mixing different types of agent concentrates or agents from different manufacturers, as this can cause gelling and unpredictable results. The tank and agent passages should be thoroughly cleaned when changing agent types.
  • Corrosion Prevention: Components may degrade from harsh chemicals like sodium hypochlorite. Long-term storage of such agents should be avoided, and the reservoir should be emptied and rinsed between uses. Chemical compatibility is the end user's responsibility, and corrosion from bleach or other disinfecting concentrates is not covered under warranty.
