OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Place your scale on a hard, flat surface, do not use on uneven tile, flooring or carpeting.
Try to keep your scale in the same location or position as much as possible.
Before using scale, allow it to reach room temperature; then put scale through several
weighing cycles consisting of:
Step on scale and allow dial or pointer to come to rest.
Step off scale and allow dial or pointer to come to rest.
If scale is relocated, readjustment to zero may be required. Repeat above procedure.
When weighing, place feet on platform so weight is evenly distributed.
After weighing cycles are completed, adjust dial or pointer to zero, if necessary
(adjustment knob is located under edge of platform or, on some models, under edge of
dial), and repeat weighing cycles until zero is stabilized.

Overview

The Taylor Mechanical Dial Bathroom Scale, models 2000 and 2020, is a personal weighing device designed for home use. This scale is a mechanical, dial-type instrument, meaning it operates without batteries and displays weight via a pointer on a circular dial. Its primary function is to provide an accurate measurement of an individual's body weight.

Function Description

The scale's core function is to measure and display body weight. Users step onto the platform, and the internal mechanical system translates the applied force into a reading on the dial. The scale is designed for straightforward operation, requiring minimal setup and no power source. It is important to note that this scale is "Not legal for trade," indicating it is intended for personal use rather than commercial applications where certified accuracy for transactions is required.

Important Technical Specifications

While specific weight capacity is not explicitly stated in the provided manual, the nature of a bathroom scale implies a typical capacity suitable for adult human weight, generally ranging from 300 to 400 pounds (approximately 136 to 181 kilograms). The scale is a mechanical device, meaning it does not rely on electronic components or batteries, which simplifies its operation and eliminates the need for power source management. The construction is designed for durability, as evidenced by the "Five (5) Year Limited Warranty" against defects in materials and workmanship. The scale is manufactured in China to Taylor's exact specifications.

Usage Features

The manual emphasizes several key usage features and best practices to ensure accurate and consistent readings:

  • Placement: The scale must be placed on a "hard, flat surface." It explicitly warns against using it on "uneven tile, flooring or carpeting," as these surfaces can interfere with the scale's internal mechanisms and lead to inaccurate measurements. Maintaining the scale in the "same location or position as much as possible" is also recommended for consistency.
  • Temperature Acclimation: Before initial use or after significant temperature changes, the scale should be allowed to "reach room temperature." This helps the mechanical components stabilize and perform accurately.
  • Initial Weighing Cycles (Calibration/Stabilization): To prepare the scale for accurate use, a series of "weighing cycles" is recommended. This involves:
    • Stepping onto the scale and allowing the dial or pointer to come to rest.
    • Stepping off the scale and allowing the dial or pointer to come to rest. This process should be repeated several times to stabilize the internal mechanisms.
  • Zero Adjustment: After the initial weighing cycles, the dial or pointer should be adjusted to zero if necessary. An "adjustment knob" is provided for this purpose, typically located "under edge of platform or, on some models, under edge of dial." This ensures that the scale reads zero when no weight is applied, providing a baseline for accurate measurements. If the scale is relocated, readjustment to zero may be required, and the weighing cycles should be repeated until zero is stabilized.
  • Weighing Posture: When weighing, users should "place feet on platform so weight is evenly distributed." Uneven weight distribution can lead to inaccurate readings.
  • Mechanical Operation: As a mechanical dial scale, it offers instant readings without any warm-up time associated with digital displays, once the initial stabilization steps are followed.

Maintenance Features

The Taylor Mechanical Dial Bathroom Scale is designed for low maintenance, focusing on simple cleaning and no internal servicing by the user:

  • Cleaning: "An occasional wiping with a soft cloth and mild soap will keep your scale attractive." The manual specifically advises against using "abrasive cleaners," which could damage the finish or markings on the scale.
  • No Oiling or Lubrication: The scale "does not require oiling or lubrication of any kind." This indicates that the internal mechanical components are designed to operate smoothly without external intervention, simplifying user maintenance.
  • Durability: The "Five (5) Year Limited Warranty" underscores the expected durability of the product, covering defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty does not cover damages or wear resulting from accident, misuse, abuse, commercial use, or unauthorized adjustment and/or repair. In case of a warranty claim, users are instructed to contact Taylor directly rather than returning the scale to the retailer. The process involves packing the item in its original packaging, returning it prepaid with the store receipt, and a note explaining the reason for return.

In summary, the Taylor Mechanical Dial Bathroom Scale (models 2000/2020) is a user-friendly, mechanically operated device for personal weight measurement. It emphasizes proper placement, initial stabilization, and simple cleaning for optimal performance and longevity, backed by a substantial warranty.
