The Tefal Smart Protect iron is primarily designed for ironing clothes and fabrics. Its core function is to generate steam and heat the soleplate to remove wrinkles and creases from various types of textiles. The "Smart Technology" feature automatically adjusts the temperature and steam output to an optimum combination suitable for most fabrics, simplifying the ironing process.
Steam Generation and Control: The iron utilizes a water tank to generate steam. Users can adjust the steam output using a dedicated control. For dry ironing, the steam function can be turned off. The iron also features a "turbo steam" button, which delivers a powerful burst of steam, useful for stubborn creases or for vertical steaming.
Temperature Control: While the "Smart Technology" aims to provide an optimal setting for most fabrics, the iron includes a temperature indicator light that signals when the soleplate has reached the desired temperature. This light turns off once the set temperature is achieved, indicating readiness for use.

Preparation: Before first use, it's recommended to remove any labels from the soleplate. When using the steam function for the first time, the iron should be allowed to operate horizontally for a few moments, with the steam button pushed several times, to burn off any manufacturing residues. The iron is designed to operate with untreated tap water, though for very hard water, a 50/50 mix with distilled water is suggested. Pure demineralized, distilled, or scented waters are not recommended as they can damage the iron.
Filling the Water Tank: To fill the water tank, the iron must be unplugged, and the steam control set to the "no steam" position. The iron should be held at a slight incline with the soleplate pointing up, the water tank cover opened, and filled to the "Max" mark before closing the cover.
Adjusting Temperature and Steam: The iron offers "normal" and "eco" settings via a slider. The "Smart Technology" provides an optimum combination of temperature and steam for most fabrics (linen, denim, silk, cotton, polyester, wool, viscose, etc.), excluding those that cannot be ironed. The "eco" setting saves 20% energy compared to the "normal" setting. The temperature indicator light illuminates when heating and turns off when the desired temperature is reached.
Dry Ironing: For dry ironing, the steam control should be set to the "no steam" position. Ironing can commence once the temperature indicator light turns off.
Getting More Steam: To increase steam output, ensure the slider is on "normal" or "eco" setting. The turbo steam button can be pressed periodically for powerful steam bursts. To prevent water dripping, allow a few seconds between each press.
Vertical Steam Ironing: For vertical steaming, the thermostat control should be set to "Normal". The turbo steam button is pressed in pulses while moving the iron from top to bottom, holding it a few centimeters from the clothing to avoid burning delicate fabrics. This is ideal for items on a hanger, keeping the fabric taut with one hand. It's crucial not to steam iron clothing while it's being worn due to the very hot steam.
Dampening Clothing (Spray): The spray button can be pressed repeatedly during dry or steam ironing to moisten clothing and tackle stubborn creases. Ensure the water tank contains water for this function.
While Ironing: Always place the iron on its heel rest when not actively ironing, rather than laying it down on the soleplate, to prevent damage and ensure safety.
Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of the Tefal Smart Protect iron. The manual outlines specific procedures for cleaning and storage.
Iron Storage: After use, the iron must be unplugged and allowed to cool for approximately 1 hour. The water tank should be emptied, and the steam control set to the "no steam" position. The power cord should be wrapped around the bottom of the iron's body, and the iron stored on its heel rest.
Cleaning the Anti-Calc Valve (Once per Month): To clean the anti-calc valve, unplug the iron and empty the water tank. Open the water tank cover and pull the valve near the steam control to remove it. Soak the valve in a glass of water with lemon juice for 4 hours, then rinse it under the tap. Reinsert the valve, pushing until a click is heard. It's important never to touch the end of the valve, and the iron will not function without it.
Descaling the Steam Chamber (Once per Month): To descale the steam chamber, fill the water tank, place the iron on its heel rest, and set the thermostat control to "normal" to allow it to heat up. Once the indicator light turns off, unplug the iron and place it over a sink. Remove the anti-calc valve. Gently shake the iron horizontally over the sink until water (containing impurities) leaks from the soleplate. The turbo steam trigger can be pushed to help flush out minerals. After the process, replace the anti-calc valve, pushing until it clicks. Finally, plug in the iron for 2 minutes on its heel rest to dry the soleplate.
Cleaning the Soleplate: Once the iron has cooled, wipe it with a soft cloth. For a still-warm soleplate, clean it with a damp non-metallic pad. Chemical or abrasive products should never be used for cleaning. Before the next use, turn on the iron in a horizontal position without contact with laundry to eliminate any remaining mineral residues from the soleplate.
