Using belt tension gauge, adjust the belt tension to
the following values:
Fan - Poly 'V' Belt
Belt Tension 'New' - 3 340 N (750 lbf)
Belt Tension 'Used' - 2 450 - 3 340 N (550 - 750 lbf)
Alternator - 'V' Belt
Belt Tension 'New' - 556 N (125 lbf)
Belt Tension 'Used' - 445 N (100 lbf)
Note: A belt is considered 'Used' if it has been in
service for 10 minutes or longer. If the used belt
tension is less than the minimum value, tighten the
belt to the maximum value.
Belts should be neither too tight nor too loose. Belts
that are too tight impose excess loads on the
crankshaft, fan and alternator bearings, shortening
both belt and bearing life. Excessively overtightened
belts can result in crankshaft breakage. A loose belt
will slip and may cause damage to accessory
components.
