TROUBLE-SHOOTING O-235 AND O-290 SERIES
TROUBLE PROBABLE CAUSE REMEDY
Excessive Oil Consumption Low grade of oil. Fill tank with oil conforming to
specification.
Failing or failed bearing. Check sump for metal particles.
Worn piston rings. Install new rings.
Incorrect installation of piston
rings.
Install new rings.
Cold Weather Difficulties Cold oil. Move aircraft into a heated
hangar. Heat oil.
Inaccurate pressure readings. In extreme cold weather, oil
pressure readings up to
approximately 100 lbs. do not
necessarily indicate
malfunctioning.
Weak battery. Install fully charged battery.
Overpriming. Leave throttle open and ignition
“off”. Put mixture control in “Idle
Cut-Off” and crank until engine
starts. Immediately return to “full
rich” mixture.
Engine Does Not Stop Linkage does not permit full
travel of “Idle Cut-Off”.
Readjust linkage for full travel.
Leaking “Idle Cut-Off”. Overhaul carburetor.
Faulty ignition switch. Check ground wires, overhaul
switch.
