8. Installing the Standard Flue
9A: INSTALL THE FLUE
Place the ue cowling (hat) on the plain end of the
ue pipe, this is meant to be a snug, tight t.
Now, t the crimped end of the ue pipe section into
the stainless steel sleeve protruding from the ue
Gallery. Remove the plastic lm from the stainless
steel ring that covers the ue expansion joint.
9B: SECURE PIPE FOR WINDY AREAS
The ue is quite stable with only one length but if
you live in a particularly windy area you may want
to secure your ue using stainless steel screws or
pop rivets (screws if you intend to remove the ue in
future). With either method you will have to pre-drill
the holes.
If you use three screws/rivets at equal spacing around
the ue, this will be sucient to hold it level.
If you’ve built your oven outdoors and the ue will be well clear of any combustible materials as per the diagram
on page 9, you can install the standard ue for the oven following the steps detailed below.
This is important, if you go down the path of installing your own ue system and somehow, your oven causes
a catastrophic re, your home insurance may be null and void. Put this in the same category as working with
high voltage electricity - the risks massively outweigh the rewards. Don’t risk it, use a licensed plumber.
You may want to change the colour of the ue - let’s say you wanted it black, for example. Don’t try to paint
the stainless steel ue - there is no paint available that can withstand the full range of temperature that this
ue can reach. Rather, get a ‘twin-skin’ ue system, and have the external ue pipe (the second skin’) painted
in a high temp coating. This will also require you to purchase a ‘twin-skin’ cowling to lock the two ue pipes
together at the top. These ue systems and other, more complex ues are available at good plumbing supply
stores, and most wood heater retailers. Your plumber will source these components for you.
The ue should be installed whenever the oven is red. Without the ue, most of the smoke will come out of the
oven mouth and cover your brickwork with soot. Leave the ue installed unless the oven is being covered for a
long period of time (eg. to protect the oven from freeze-thaw during winter in a very cold climate).
If your installation involves anything more complex than the basic setup that we provide in
the kit, you must engage a suitably qualied plumber to supply and install the ue for you.
Your local replace store will have several professionals they can recommend. Your oven can
reach extreme temperatures, to the point where the ue glows orange.
