The Therabath Professional Thermotherapy device is a paraffin bath designed for symptomatic relief of pain and to promote relaxation and circulation. It is intended for use by adults and adolescents in medical, clinical, therapeutic, or home settings.
The Therabath paraffin bath operates by heating paraffin wax to a therapeutic temperature. The unit is equipped with three thermostats: two control thermostats that automatically maintain the paraffin within specified temperature ranges, and a high-limit thermostat that acts as a safety shut-off in case of control thermostat failure. A pilot light on the end of the unit indicates when the device is actively heating; it illuminates during the heating cycle and cycles on and off during normal operation. The continuous heating capability ensures the unit is always ready for use once the paraffin is melted. The device is designed to relax muscles, relieve stiffness and muscle spasms, and stimulate circulation. It is useful for conditions such as medically diagnosed arthritis, bursitis, and chronic joint inflammation. It may also be prescribed for post-fracture or post-dislocation treatment, sprains, strains, restriction of motion due to scar tissue, and other conditions where heat therapy is indicated. Additionally, it is commonly used prior to therapeutic exercise and massage and may be prescribed for certain peripheral vascular diseases.
To set up the Therabath, the unit should be placed on a flat, secure surface. The included bags of paraffin wax are placed inside the tank, followed by the plastic grille on top of the unmelted paraffin. The lid is then rested on top of the paraffin and grille. Once plugged in, the paraffin will melt, typically within 6 to 8 hours for a normal melt or 3 to 4 hours for a quick melt. The unit should remain plugged in continuously to ensure it is always ready for use.
For optimal performance and to maintain the desired paraffin level, only Therabath brand refill paraffin should be used. The recommended paraffin levels are 6 lbs for standard usage, 8 lbs for maximum deep immersion for feet, and 9 lbs for maximum deep immersion for hands. Overfilling the unit should be avoided.
Before applying paraffin, the skin should be cleansed and dried, and clothing and jewelry should be kept away from the treatment area. The treatment process involves slowly dipping the hand, foot, or elbow into the bath. For other treatment areas, paraffin application strips can be used. After dipping, the treated area is removed from the bath, and the user waits a few seconds until the shine dissipates. This dipping process is repeated 3 to 10 times. To retain heat, the treated area can be covered with a plastic liner and then an insulated mitt or boot. The paraffin should remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes before being removed and discarded. Used paraffin should not be remelted.
Optional accessories such as Pre-Treatment Cleansing Spray, Hydrating Cream, paraffin application strips, plastic liners, mitts, and boots are available separately to enhance the treatment experience.
Regular cleaning of the paraffin bath is recommended when noticeable sediment accumulates at the bottom of the tank. To clean, the unit should first be unplugged, and the grille removed. The paraffin is allowed to solidify. Once solid, the unit is plugged in and tipped upside down on a wax-safe surface for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until the paraffin loosens and falls out. The unit is then unplugged, and any remaining paraffin in the tank is removed with soft paper towels. The tank coating should not be scratched or damaged, and abrasive scouring powders should not be used. The unit should never be immersed in water. After cleaning, the unit should be refilled with Therabath brand paraffin.
The device is not user-serviceable. If the unit malfunctions, such as not completely melting paraffin after 12 hours or if any control thermostat fails, it should be returned to the manufacturer for servicing. For warranty service, users must contact the manufacturer to obtain return authorization instructions and prior approval, providing proof of purchase, contact information, and a detailed description of the defect. The purchaser is responsible for shipping and handling expenses for warranty service.
