First, the burner may be clogged, so clean it by shifting the grate to the winter position and riddle until the ash drops through. The moisture content of the wood may be too high, or the pieces too large; use smaller pieces of seasoned firewood. Insufficient air in the room can also be a factor; ensure an adequate air inlet.
