MAINTENANCE
After each use, back o the drag completely and rinse
the reel thoroughly with fresh, warm water giving
special attention to the backing and the perforations in
the Spool. (Do not let the reel soak). Shake the reel to
remove excess water and leave in an open area (indoors)
to dry overnight. The following day, put the reel through
all of its drag settings and then return to free spool for
storage. Periodically, especially after extensive exposure
to saltwater, the line and backing should be removed and
wiped down with a wet cloth to remove salt. When the
reel, line and backing are completely dry, the reel should
be stored in its protective pouch.
All reels are lubricated at the factory prior to assembly
and re-lubrication is generally not necessary. Should you
wish to disassemble your reel for cleaning, the only
tool you will need is a penny. Insert the penny into the
Drag Adjustment Stop Nut; unscrew and remove the Nut.
Unscrew the Drag Adjustment Knob and remove. The
Frame and Spool will now separate. Clean as necessary
and reassemble, making sure not to disturb any grease
on back of Spool. Be sure to tighten the Drag Knob
completely before replacing the Drag Adjustment Stop
Nut. If you wish to lubricate the Cork Drag Disc, use only
a small amount of Tibor Graphite Lube.
Please note: Exceeding the recommended capacity by
over-lling the Spool and/or putting line on too tightly
or with too much tension may damage the Spool and is
not covered under warranty. Please refer to the capacity
sizes on our website tiborreel.com and use the Backing
Groove on the Spool as your guide. Monolament
backing is not recommended for use on Tibor reels.
Should you have any questions about backing for your
reel, please contact your authorized Tibor dealer.
CONVERSION FROM RIGHT TO LEFT
HAND RETRIEVE
Tibor reels are shipped from the factory with right hand
retrieve unless specied. An authorized dealer can easily
convert any Tibor reel from right to left hand retrieve for
you. You may also convert the reel yourself by reversing
the Clutch Dogs. Please refer to the numbered parts list on
the reverse side.
1. Begin by removing the Spool (part #14) from the
Frame with a penny; the Main Gear (part #10) is held
in place by a Snap Ring (part #31).
2. Unscrew the Clutch Screws (part #6).
3. Remove the Clutch Dogs (part #5); make sure the
Bushing is retained between the Clutch Screw and
the Clutch Dog.
4. Using tweezers, remove the Clutch Springs (part #9)
and replace them in the opposite Retainer Blocks
(part #7).
5. Replace the Clutch Dogs so they press against the
Clutch Springs.
6. Tighten the Clutch Screws. Do not overtighten, as
this may strip the threads in the frame.
7. Reassemble the Spool and Frame.
8. Replace the Drag Knob (part #24) and tighten
completely, before replacing the Drag Adjustment
Stop Nut (part #23).

Overview

The Tibor Fly Reel is a precision-engineered fishing reel designed for durability, performance, and ease of maintenance. It is primarily used for fly fishing, offering a robust drag system and a design that allows for both right and left-hand retrieve.

Function Description

The core function of the Tibor Fly Reel is to manage fishing line, provide a smooth and powerful drag to control fish, and allow for efficient retrieval. The reel's design emphasizes reliability and strength, making it suitable for various fly fishing applications, including those targeting large game fish. The drag system, featuring a Cork Drag Disc, is a critical component, offering consistent and adjustable resistance. The reel is designed to be easily convertible between right and left-hand retrieve, providing flexibility for different anglers.

Important Technical Specifications

While specific numerical specifications like gear ratios or maximum drag force are not explicitly detailed in the provided manual, several design elements imply robust technical capabilities:

  • Drag System: Features a Cork Drag Disc, which is known for its smooth and consistent performance when properly maintained. The drag is adjustable via a Drag Knob and secured by a Drag Adjustment Stop Nut.
  • Construction Materials: The visual representation suggests a metallic construction, likely anodized aluminum, known for its strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, crucial for saltwater environments.
  • Retrieve System: Utilizes a Clutch Dog mechanism for retrieve direction. The conversion process involves reversing the Clutch Dogs and Clutch Springs, indicating a robust and user-serviceable system.
  • Backing Capacity: The reel includes a "Backing Groove" on the Spool as a guide for line capacity. The manual explicitly warns against over-filling the Spool or putting line on too tightly, as this can damage the Spool and is not covered under warranty. It also states that monofilament backing is not recommended for use on Tibor reels, suggesting specific requirements for backing material to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Parts List: A comprehensive parts list is provided, including components like the Main Shaft, Main Gear, Clutch Dog, Clutch Spring, Spool, Handle Knob, and Snap Ring, indicating a modular design that allows for part replacement and repair.

Usage Features

The Tibor Fly Reel is designed with several user-friendly features:

  • Retrieve Hand Conversion: A significant feature is the ability to convert the reel from right to left-hand retrieve (or vice-versa). This can be done by an authorized dealer or by the user. The process involves disassembling the Spool, unscrewing the Clutch Screws, removing and reversing the Clutch Dogs and Clutch Springs, and then reassembling. This flexibility caters to the preference of individual anglers.
  • Drag Adjustment: The Drag Knob allows for easy adjustment of the drag settings. The manual advises tightening the Drag Knob completely before replacing the Drag Adjustment Stop Nut during reassembly, indicating a specific sequence for proper drag system function.
  • Line Management: The "Backing Groove" on the Spool serves as a visual guide for proper line and backing capacity, helping users avoid over-filling which can lead to damage.
  • Dealer Support: Tibor emphasizes the availability of replacement parts through authorized dealers and online at tiborreel.com. This ensures that users can readily obtain necessary components for repair or maintenance.
  • Model Specificity: When ordering parts, users are instructed to specify the model name (e.g., The Everglades, The Gulfstream, The Pacific) in addition to the part name and number, indicating that parts may vary between different reel models.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance is a key aspect of the Tibor Fly Reel's design, aimed at ensuring longevity and consistent performance:

  • Post-Use Cleaning: After each use, the reel should be thoroughly rinsed with fresh, warm water, paying special attention to the backing and the perforations in the Spool. It's crucial not to soak the reel. After rinsing, the reel should be shaken to remove excess water and left in an open area (indoors) to dry overnight.
  • Drag System Exercise: The day after drying, the reel should be put through all its drag settings before returning to free spool for storage. This helps maintain the functionality of the drag system.
  • Line and Backing Maintenance: Periodically, especially after extensive exposure to saltwater, the line and backing should be removed and wiped down with a wet cloth to remove salt. Once dry, the line and backing should be re-spooled.
  • Storage: The reel should be stored in its protective pouch once completely dry.
  • User Disassembly for Cleaning: The reel is designed for easy user disassembly for cleaning. The only tool required is a penny, used to unscrew the Drag Adjustment Stop Nut. This allows for the removal of the Drag Adjustment Knob, separating the Frame and Spool for cleaning.
  • Lubrication: While reels are factory-lubricated and re-lubrication is generally not necessary, if the Cork Drag Disc requires lubrication, only a small amount of Tibor Graphite Lube should be used. Users are advised not to disturb any grease on the back of the Spool during cleaning.
  • Warranty Considerations: The manual explicitly states that exceeding recommended capacity or putting line on too tightly, which can damage the Spool, is not covered under warranty. This highlights the importance of following usage guidelines for proper maintenance and warranty validity.
  • Professional Assistance: For questions regarding backing or complex issues, users are encouraged to contact an authorized Tibor dealer.
