This document describes the TMG-GWC4 4-inch Wood Chipper, a 7HP KOHLER® Powered machine designed for chipping wood and branches.

Function Description

The TMG-GWC4 Wood Chipper is a powerful tool designed to chip wood and branches into smaller pieces. It is intended for outdoor use on flat, dry ground and should only be operated by trained individuals familiar with its manual. The machine features an in-feed hopper for material input and a discharge chute for output. It is equipped with twin reversible blades for efficient chipping and a recoil or electric start engine. The chipper is capable of processing wood and branches up to 100mm (4 inches) in diameter.

Usage Features

The TMG-GWC4 Wood Chipper is designed for straightforward operation, but emphasizes safety and proper procedure.

  • Pre-Operation Checklist: Before starting, operators must ensure they are fully trained, have read and understood the manual, the machine is on level ground, all guards are fitted and in good condition, blades are secure and sharp, all fasteners are tight, only wooden materials free of nails are fed, and a fire extinguisher is available.
  • Starting Procedure:
    1. Position the chipper on flat, dry ground and engage the front wheel brake.
    2. Ensure the fuel shut-off valve is in the "ON" position.
    3. Move the choke control lever to "CHOKE" (for cold engines).
    4. Move the throttle control lever to "FAST".
    5. For Recoil Start: Turn Ignition Switch to "On", grasp the recoil starter handle, pull slowly until resistance is felt, let the cord retract slightly, then pull rapidly to start.
    6. For Electric Start: Turn and hold the Key in the start position until the engine starts, then release.
    7. Slowly move the choke control lever back to "RUN" once the engine is running well.
    8. Warm up the engine at half throttle for 3-4 minutes, then advance to maximum speed.
  • Stopping Procedure:
    1. Move the Throttle Lever to IDLE.
    2. For Recoil Start: Turn the Ignition Switch to the OFF position.
    3. For Electric Start: Turn the Key to the OFF position.
  • Operator Zone: The manual clearly defines a safe "OPERATOR ZONE" around the machine, emphasizing that the operator must remain within this zone during operation.
  • Material Handling: Only wood and branches up to 100mm in diameter should be fed. Feeding should always be done from the side.
  • Handling Blockages: If the roller stops due to a blockage, immediately stop the engine, remove the stuck material, then restart and resume chipping.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always wear protective gear: safety goggles/glasses with side shields, hearing protection, tight-fitting gloves (without loose cuffs/drawstrings), and steel-toed shoes.
    • Avoid loose clothing or jewelry.
    • Keep bystanders, children, and pets at least 50 feet away.
    • Never place hands or any body part into the in-feed chute or discharge chute while the engine is running.
    • Do not operate on uneven ground where the unit is unstable.
    • Do not operate under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
    • Operate only in daylight.
    • Never operate the engine in an enclosed area due to carbon monoxide risk.
    • Store fuel and oil in approved containers away from heat and open flames.
    • Allow the engine to cool completely before storing.
    • Never tamper with the engine's governor setting or safety devices.
    • If unusual noise or vibration occurs, shut down the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, wait 5 minutes, and inspect for damage.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the TMG-GWC4 Wood Chipper. Always refer to both this manual and the engine manufacturer's user manual for detailed procedures.

  • Safety Before Maintenance: Before any maintenance or inspection, stop the engine, wait five minutes for parts to cool, and disconnect the spark plug wire (and battery terminals for electric start models) to prevent accidental starting.
  • Regular Maintenance Checklist:
    • Before Each Use: Check engine oil level, general equipment condition, wedge sharpness, grease surface of slide rail, and belts.
    • Every 3 Hours: (No specific items listed in the table for this interval, but general checks are implied).
    • Every 25 Hours: Check tire pressure, clean engine exterior and cooling, change engine oil (first time at 5 hours), and replace air filter.
    • Every 100 Hours: Replace spark plug.
  • Engine Service: Refer to the engine manufacturer's user manual for all engine-specific maintenance.
  • Lubrication: All bearings are sealed units and should have sufficient lubricant for the machine's normal lifespan.
  • Blade Replacement/Adjustment:
    • The blades are bidirectional; if one side is worn, the blade can be reversed before needing replacement.
    • To replace/adjust: Turn the roller axle with a wrench, loosen screws with a T-wrench to access the blade, replace with a new blade, and adjust the lower blade to maintain a 1-3mm gap.
    • Adjusting Blade Clearance: Loosen screw #67, then screw #48. Move #66 on the U-groove until the spacing between the roller blade and the lower blade spacer is within 1-3mm. Lock screw #48, then lock screw #67.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting table is provided to address common issues such as the engine not starting, lacking power, running smoothly, or smoking, and the operator lever snapping out of gear. It also covers issues related to insufficient chipping power and the operator lever not engaging the rack with the pinion gear. Solutions include checking fuel, spark plug, air filter, oil level, belts, and cleaning debris.
