Overview

This document describes the TMG-GWC5 4-3/4 inch Tow-Behind Wood Chipper, powered by a 13.5HP Briggs & Stratton engine. It serves as a product manual, providing essential information for safe operation, installation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The TMG-GWC5 is a powerful wood chipper designed solely for chipping wood. It is a tow-behind unit, indicating its portability and ability to be transported to various work sites. The machine processes wood and branches, reducing them into smaller chips, which can be useful for landscaping, composting, or other applications. The design emphasizes safety, with multiple warnings and precautions outlined to prevent injury and property damage during operation. It features an in-feed assembly for introducing wood and a discharge chute for expelling the processed chips. The unit is equipped with a recoil start or electric start option for the engine, and a throttle control lever to manage engine speed.

Usage Features

The manual emphasizes the importance of proper training and adherence to safety guidelines before operating the wood chipper. Key usage features and recommendations include:

  • Operator Training: Operators must be fully trained and familiar with the manual's content.
  • Safety Gear: Always wear protective goggles or safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection, tight-fitting gloves (without loose cuffs or drawstrings), and non-slip shoes (preferably steel-toed). Avoid loose clothing or jewelry.
  • Work Area: Position the machine on level ground with all guards fitted and in good condition. Keep children, pets, and bystanders at least 50 feet away from the working area. Do not operate on pavement, gravel, or other hard surfaces where objects can ricochet.
  • Feeding Material: Always feed from the side. Do not place wood or branches over 100mm diameter into the shredder hopper to prevent blades from getting stuck. Only feed WOODEN materials free of nails. Never put any part of your body into the in-feed chute while the machine is running.
  • Starting Procedure:
    1. Position on flat, dry ground, and engage the front wheel brake.
    2. Ensure fuel shut-off valve is "ON."
    3. Move choke control lever to "CHOKE" (for cold engine).
    4. Move throttle control lever to "FAST."
    5. For Recoil Start: Turn Ignition Switch to "On," pull starter handle rapidly after feeling resistance.
    6. For Electric Start: Turn and hold Key in start position until engine starts.
    7. Slowly move choke lever to "RUN" once the engine is running well.
    8. Warm up the engine at half throttle for 3-4 minutes, then advance to maximum speed.
  • Stopping Procedure:
    1. Move Throttle Lever to IDLE.
    2. For Recoil Start: Turn Ignition Switch to "OFF."
    3. For Electric Start: Turn Key to "OFF."
  • Blocked Roller: If the roller stops, immediately stop the engine, remove the stuck wood, then restart and chip again.
  • Engine Operation: Never run the engine in an enclosed area without proper ventilation. Do not tamper with the engine's governor setting. Keep combustible materials away from the hot engine and muffler.
  • Fuel Safety: Fill the gasoline tank outdoors with the engine off and cool. Do not handle gasoline near open flames or while smoking. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately. Store fuel in approved containers away from heat and open flames.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. The manual provides a maintenance checklist and specific instructions:

  • Pre-Maintenance Safety: Before any maintenance or inspection, stop the engine, wait five minutes for parts to cool, disconnect the spark plug wire (keeping it away from the plug), and disconnect battery terminals (for electric start models).
  • Regular Maintenance Checklist:
    • Before Each Use: Check engine oil level, general equipment condition, wedge sharpness, grease surface of slide rail, and belts.
    • Every 3 Hours: Check tire pressure.
    • Every 25 Hours: Clean engine exterior and cooling, change engine oil (first time at 5 hours), replace air filter.
    • Every 100 Hours: Replace spark plug.
  • Engine Service: Refer to the engine manufacturer's user manual for detailed engine maintenance.
  • Lubrication: All bearings are sealed units and should have sufficient lubricant for the machine's normal lifespan.
  • Blade Replacement:
    1. The blades are bidirectional; if one side is worn, the blade can be flipped.
    2. Turn the roller axle with a wrench.
    3. Loosen screws with a T wrench to access the blade.
    4. Replace with a new blade or flip the existing one.
    5. Adjust the lower blade to maintain a 1-3mm gap after changing.
  • Blade Clearance Adjustment:
    1. Loosen screw NO. 16, then screw NO. 27.
    2. Move NO. 59 on the U-groove to achieve a 1-3mm spacing between the roller blade and the lower blade spacer.
    3. Lock screw NO. 27, then lock screw NO. 16.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting table is provided for common issues like engine not starting, lack of power, engine smoking, or operator lever problems, with possible causes and solutions. For persistent problems, contact dealers.
