Overview

The Toro TransPro™ 80 Tow-Behind Trailer is a transport frame designed for use with a variety of Toro Greensmaster walk greensmowers, including models 800, 1000, 1010, 1600, 1610, 2000, 2600, as well as Flex 18, 21, 1800, 1820, 2100, 2120 and eFlex 1800, 1820, 2100, 2120. Its primary function is to facilitate the safe and efficient towing of these greensmowers, preventing damage to the greensmower's axles and transmissions that would otherwise rotate when towed. The trailer is available in several models: 04238 (Serial No. 230000801 and Up), 04244, 04245, and 04247.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Tire Pressure: The trailer tires should be inflated to 0.35 bar (5 psi) or 34 kPa. Higher tire pressure may damage the machine.
  • Wheel Lug Nut Torque: Wheel lug nuts must be tightened to 108 N·m (80 ft-lbs). Failure to maintain proper torque can lead to wheel failure or loss, potentially causing personal injury.
  • Maximum Towing Speed: The maximum recommended towing speed is 15 mph (24 km/h).
  • Weight Capacity: The TransPro 80 and one greensmower together weigh approximately 400 lb (182 kg). Users must ensure their tow vehicle has adequate braking and handling capacity for this weight.
  • Slope Towing Limit: Do not tow down slopes greater than 15°.
  • Hub Nut Torque (Installation): When installing the wheel hub assembly, the hub nut should be torqued to 8.5 to 20.3 N·m (75 to 180 in-lbs) while turning the wheel hub assembly to seat the bearings and remove end play.
  • Hub Nut Torque (Final): After loosening the hub nut until it no longer contacts the washer and the hub has end play, tighten it to 1.7 to 2.3 N·m (15 to 20 in-lbs) while rotating the hub.

Usage Features:

The trailer features a tongue assembly that inserts into the frame and is secured with a clevis pin, washers, and cotter pins. Depending on the greensmower model, the axle and ramp (Model 04245) or rail (Models 04244 and 04247) assemblies are mounted to the frame. Specific mounting holes are designated based on the width of the greensmower. For greensmowers with groomers, special mounting instructions apply (e.g., Greensmaster 1000/2000 or 2100 with groomer: left side to position #3, right side to position #1; Greensmaster 1800/eFlex 1800 with groomer: left side to position #2, right side to position #3).

For models 04244 and 04247, mounting the greensmower wheel assemblies involves removing existing transport wheels and, for Flex 18 or 21 models, removing the right side drum cover, discarding the rubber grommet, affixing a felt seal around the axle hole, and reinstalling the cover. A new wheel shaft (Part No. 106–5385 or 136-7287) may be required for greensmowers with groomers. Wheels are then inserted onto each shaft and secured with a wheel clip. The Flex 1800, 1820, 2100, and 2120 series require a different wheel offset, and users should follow the mounting instructions molded into the sides of the wheels.

Loading the trailer involves lowering the trailer bed to the ground by pressing down on the latch assembly and lift handle. Wheel rods are pivoted upward on flat ramps or rotated parallel (open) to the ramp on rail ramps. The greensmower's basket is removed, reel drive disengaged, and throttle set to the slowest position before slowly driving the greensmower onto the trailer until the wheel stops are contacted. If rail wheels are not centered, the rails can be adjusted. After loading, the engine is shut off, the parking brake engaged, and wheel rods are engaged (downward over transport wheels on flat ramps, or lifted and rotated behind transport wheels on rail ramps). The trailer assembly is then locked into the latch assembly. Bungee straps are used to secure the front of the greensmower (to the basket hoop for Flex GreensMaster machines, or basket horns for fixed-head GreensMaster machines). The greensmower basket should be stored in the tow vehicle.

Operating Tips:

  • Always ensure the trailer tongue is parallel to the ground when aligning with the tow vehicle hitch.
  • Use a retention device on the hitch pin.
  • Always slow the tow vehicle gradually when changing direction, stopping, turning, or driving on slopes.
  • Avoid sudden or sharp turns, especially on inclines, ramps, grades, or similar surfaces.
  • Drive up and down slopes, inclines, or grades whenever possible, avoiding driving across them.
  • Exercise extreme caution and slow speed when backing up.
  • Watch for traffic and yield to pedestrians/other vehicles when near or crossing roads.
  • If abnormal vibration occurs, stop immediately, shut off the tow vehicle, and repair any damage before towing.
  • The bungee strap should be used to secure the greensmower during transport, with adjustable mounting holes for different mowers.
  • Do not drive on highways or public roads.
  • Slow down in unfamiliar areas or over rough terrain.
  • Use genuine Toro replacement parts to ensure optimum performance and safety.

Maintenance Features:

  • After the first 10 hours: Check the torque of the wheel lug nuts.
  • Yearly: Service the wheel hub, inspect for damage, and lubricate the wheel hub assembly.
  • Servicing the Wheel Hub: This involves raising the trailer on jack stands, removing the wheel, dust cap, cotter pin, retainer locknut, hub nut, spindle washer, and hub assembly from the axle. All hub assembly parts (bearings, bearing cups, oil seal) should be inspected and damaged parts replaced.
  • Lubricating the Wheel Hub Assembly: Existing grease is wiped away, and new high-temperature grease is packed into the bearing cups and interior surfaces of the hub assembly.
  • Installing the Wheel Hub Assembly: The oil seal, hub assembly, and spindle washer are installed. The hub nut is tightened while turning the wheel hub assembly to seat bearings and remove end play, then torqued to 8.5 to 20.3 N·m (75 to 180 in-lbs). It is then loosened until it doesn't contact the washer, and then retightened to 1.7 to 2.3 N·m (15 to 20 in-lbs) while rotating the hub. A new cotter pin is installed through the retainer locknut and axle, and the hub cap is secured.
  • General Maintenance: Keep all nuts, bolts, and fasteners tightened securely. Replace any parts removed during servicing or adjustments.
