What to do if my Toro 09801 Tiller will not move when the traction ball is engaged?

If the Toro Tiller unit doesn't move when the traction ball is engaged, first check for motion at the pump pivot plate. Inspect the traction push/pull cable and override assembly under the tiller handle. Also, ensure the oil level in the hydraulic reservoir (gearbox) is sufficient and replenish if necessary. Make sure the bypass valve is fully closed, and adjust the traction drive belt tension if it's incorrect.

Why does my Toro 09801 engine die during startup?

      Bianca MendozaAug 15, 2025
If your Toro Tiller engine dies during startup, first open the fuel shut-off valve. If that doesn't work, replenish the fuel tank if the fuel level is low. Check the choke connections and operation, and regulate the choke until the engine is warm when starting a cold engine. Also, check the engine oil level, as the oil pressure switch must activate to protect the engine while running. If starting in cold conditions (30°), multiple start attempts may be needed to trip the oil pressure switch.

What to do if my Toro 09801 engine dies when the water system is engaged?

If the engine of your Toro Tiller dies when the water system is engaged, put the throttle in the FAST position when aerating. If that doesn't work, adjust the carburetor fast setting to 3450–3550 RPM. If the engine power is still low, have the system serviced by an Authorized Toro Distributor.

Why my Toro 09801 will not transport at full speed?
    • E
      Edward Riley IIAug 26, 2025
If the Toro Tiller unit will not transport at full speed, ensure the unit is fully raised to the transport position by holding the lift toggle switch until the slip clutch in the actuator can be heard ratcheting and the spindle lift arms are nearly vertical with the rear axle spindle tipped away from the engine. Replenish the oil in the hydraulic reservoir (gearbox) if the level is low. Also, make sure the bypass valve is fully closed and adjust the traction drive belt tension if it's incorrect. Check that motion occurs at the pump pivot plate when the traction ball is moved and inspect the traction push/pull cable and override assembly under the tiller handle.

Why is the water injection system on my Toro 09801 making an unusual noise?
    • K
      Kyle CarterAug 30, 2025
With the water supply on, open the bleed valve under the accumulator/valve body to address air in the system. If mechanical noise continues during aeration, stop the unit and have it serviced by an Authorized Toro Distributor. Open the bleed valve and examine the nozzles, verifying the size and quantity per the recommendation chart, if a nozzle is missing or there are too many large nozzles installed. Replace the springs and inspect the ball and seat, if there are broken springs in the nozzle extension check valve. Remove the drive shaft guard and repair or replace as necessary, if the gearbox drive shaft or couplers are worn.

Why are the aeration holes from my Toro Tiller shallow?
    • K
      Kelly ShannonSep 5, 2025
To fix shallow or improper hole depth on your Toro Tiller, open the main bleed valve to purge air from the system. If the hole depth was satisfactory earlier, check the density and moisture content of the soil, and a different nozzle configuration may be required. If the soil composition is hard, open the bleed valve and examine the nozzles, verifying the size and quantity per the recommendation chart. If there are too many large nozzles, causing a loss in pressure which could damage the accumulator or other water system components, have the water system checked by an Authorized Toro Distributor.
