Overview

This document describes the 22-inch Recycler Lawn Mower with SmartStow, Model No. 20340, designed for residential homeowners to cut grass on well-maintained lawns. It is not intended for cutting brush or for agricultural uses. The mower features a rotary blade and is designed for walk-behind operation.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to cut grass and manage clippings. It offers multiple clipping management options: recycling, bagging, and side-discharging. The "Recycler" feature is designed to finely cut grass and leaf clippings, returning them to the lawn as mulch for fertilization. The "SmartStow" feature allows the mower to be stored vertically, minimizing storage space, which is particularly useful during the mowing season or off-season.

Usage Features

The mower is designed for ease of use and operator safety. Before operation, users are instructed to read the Operator's Manual, ensure all guards and safety devices are in place, and inspect the machine for damage. Fueling the machine requires fresh unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher, and the manual strongly recommends adding fuel stabilizer to reduce starting problems. The engine oil level must be checked before each use, and the machine comes with a bottle of oil for initial filling.

Adjusting the cutting height is a key feature, allowing users to set the front and rear wheels to the desired height. The cutting-height settings range from 25 mm (1 inch) to 102 mm (4 inches). The handle can be unfolded and locked into an operating position, and the recoil-starter rope is installed in a guide for easy starting.

During operation, the mower emphasizes safety precautions such as wearing appropriate clothing, avoiding operation while ill or under the influence, and keeping hands and feet away from moving parts. The blade-control bar must be held against the handle to start the engine, and releasing it shuts off the engine and stops the blade within 3 seconds.

The self-propel drive feature allows the machine to keep pace with the user, reducing physical effort. If the machine does not roll backward freely after self-propelling, users are advised to disengage the wheel drive by moving the machine forward a couple of centimeters.

Clipping management is versatile:

  • Recycling: The machine is factory-ready to recycle grass and leaf clippings back into the lawn. This is the default mode if the grass bag is not attached or if the bag-on-demand lever is in the recycling position.
  • Bagging: Users can attach the grass bag to collect clippings. The bag-on-demand lever allows switching between bagging and recycling without removing the bag. To bag, the lever is moved forward until it pops up.
  • Side-Discharging: For cutting very tall grass, a side-discharge chute can be installed. This requires removing the grass bag and setting the bag-on-demand lever to the recycling position.

Operating tips include inspecting the area for objects, avoiding striking solid objects, and shutting off the engine immediately if the machine strikes an object or vibrates abnormally. For optimal cutting, users should cut only about a third of the grass blade at a time and avoid mowing in wet conditions. When cutting tall grass, it's recommended to mow at the highest setting first, then lower it for a finer finish. For leaf cutting, users should ensure half of the lawn shows through the cut leaf cover and slow down if necessary.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the mower. The recommended maintenance schedule includes daily checks and yearly procedures.

Daily/Before Each Use Maintenance:

  • Check the engine-oil level and add oil as needed.
  • Ensure the engine stops within 3 seconds after releasing the blade-control bar.
  • Clean grass clippings and dirt from under the machine.

Yearly Maintenance:

  • Empty the fuel tank before annual storage.
  • Clean the air cooling system and service the air filter. More frequent cleaning is needed in dusty conditions.
  • Replace or sharpen the blade.
  • Refer to the engine owner's manual for additional yearly maintenance.

Preparing for Maintenance:

  • Always shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
  • Disconnect the spark-plug wire from the spark plug before any maintenance to prevent accidental starting.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection when servicing the machine, especially when handling the sharp blade.
  • The manual warns against tampering with safety devices.
  • Tipping the machine should be done with the dipstick down to prevent fuel leakage. It is recommended to run the fuel tank dry before tipping.

Specific Maintenance Procedures:

  • Servicing the Air Filter: This involves unclipping the air-filter cover, removing and inspecting the air filter. If excessively dirty, it should be replaced; otherwise, gently tapping it on a hard surface can loosen debris.
  • Changing the Engine Oil: While not strictly required, if desired, the procedure involves warming the engine, removing the dipstick, tipping the machine onto its side (air filter up) or setting it in the vertical-stow position to drain the old oil, then refilling with new oil to the Full mark on the dipstick.
  • Replacing the Blade: This procedure requires a torque wrench. Users must hold the blade steady with a block of wood, remove the blade bolt, install the new blade with the curved ends pointing toward the machine housing, and tighten the blade bolt to 82 N·m (60 ft-lb).
  • Adjusting the Self-Propel Drive: If the self-propel cable is new or out of adjustment, the adjustment knob can be turned counterclockwise to loosen, then the cable tension adjusted by pulling it away from the engine (to decrease traction) or pushing it toward the engine (to increase traction), and finally tightening the knob clockwise.

Cleaning the Machine:

  • The machine should be cleaned after each use, especially using the washout port. This involves lowering the cutting height, moving the machine to a paved surface, washing under the rear deflector, attaching a garden hose to the washout port, running the water, starting the engine to wash out clippings, then shutting off the water and engine, and finally running the engine for a few minutes to dry the underside.
  • For vertical-stow cleaning, the machine is set in the vertical-stow position, and clippings are washed out from under the machine.

Storage:

  • For storage, the machine should be in a cool, clean, dry place.
  • Preparing for Storage: Add fuel stabilizer to the fuel, dispose of unused fuel, run the machine until the engine shuts off from lack of fuel, disconnect the spark plug wire, add oil through the spark plug hole, and pull the starter rope several times to distribute oil.
  • Removing from Storage: Check and tighten fasteners, remove the spark plug and spin the engine to blow out excess oil, reinstall the spark plug, perform maintenance, check engine oil, fill the fuel tank, and connect the spark plug wire.
  • The SmartStow feature allows vertical storage, but it's critical to ensure the fuel tank level is not too high to prevent leaks and to set the cutting height to 35 mm (1-3/8 inches) or higher. The handle locks are disengaged, the handle folded fully forward (routing cables outside the knobs), and the handle locks engaged before lifting the front of the machine into storage.
