Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides model and serial numbers for the device. The Model No. 38741 and Model No. 38742 are associated with Serial No. 402082000 and Up.

Engine Oil Specifications:

  • Engine oil capacity: 0.60 L (20 fl oz)
  • Oil viscosity: Refer to Figure 26 for specific recommendations based on temperature.
  • API service classification: SJ or higher

Fuel Specifications:

  • For best results, use only clean, fresh (less than 30 days old), unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher ((R+M)/2 rating method).
  • Oxygenated fuel with up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE by volume is acceptable.
  • Do not use ethanol blends of gasoline (such as E15 or E85) with more than 10% ethanol by volume.
  • Do not use gasoline containing methanol.
  • Do not store fuel either in the fuel tank or fuel containers over the winter unless you use a fuel stabilizer.
  • Do not add oil to gasoline.

Spark Plug:

  • Use a NGK BPR6ES or Champion RN9YC spark plug or equivalent.
  • Set the gap on the plug to 0.030 inch (0.76 mm).
  • Tighten the spark plug to 20 to 22 ft-lb (27 to 30 N-m).

Control Cable Adjustment:

  • Ensure that a 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch (2 mm to 3 mm) gap exists between the control bar and the handle (Figure 20).

Usage Features

Setup:

  • Unfolding the Handle: The handle needs to be unfolded and secured during the initial setup.
  • Installing the Discharge Chute: The discharge chute is installed using screws and nuts as shown in the manual.
  • Filling the Engine with Oil: The engine oil is filled through the oil-fill cap. The manual specifies the oil capacity and recommends checking the oil level after filling.
  • Adjusting the Control Cable: The control cable needs to be adjusted to ensure proper operation.

Operation:

  • Before Operation Safety:
    • Always wear adequate garments and eye protection.
    • Ensure all fasteners are secure.
    • Use extension cords and receptacles as specified in the manual if using an electric-start model.
  • Filling the Fuel Tank: Fill the fuel tank with the recommended gasoline. Do not overfill.
  • Checking the Engine-Oil Level: Regularly check the engine oil level before each use.
  • Starting the Engine:
    • Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
    • Pull the choke lever.
    • Prime the engine by pushing the primer bulb. The number of primes depends on the temperature.
    • Connect an extension cord to a power source and the machine, and push the electric-start button (electric-start models only) or pull the recoil-start handle.
    • Do not run the electric starter more than 10 seconds at intervals of 5 seconds on, then 5 seconds off.
  • Engaging the Rotor Blades: To engage the rotor blades, hold the control bar against the handle.
  • Adjusting the Discharge Chute and Chute Deflector: Adjust the discharge chute and chute-deflector handle to direct snow as desired.
  • Clearing a Clogged Discharge Chute: Shut off the engine, wait 10 seconds for the rotor blades to stop rotating, and use a clean-out tool to clear the chute.
  • Shutting Off the Engine: Turn the ignition key counterclockwise to the OFF position.
  • After Operation:
    • Preventing Freeze-up: Run the engine for a few minutes to prevent moving parts from freezing.
    • Store the machine properly to prevent rust and damage.

Safety Decals: The manual includes several safety decals that provide important warnings and instructions, such as:

  • Warning against thrown objects and bystanders.
  • Warning against cutting/dismemberment from impeller.
  • Warning against fuel spill hazards.
  • Instructions for engaging and disengaging rotor blades.
  • Warning about hot surfaces.
