Questions and Answers

Overview

This document serves as the Owner's Manual for Toshiba Air Conditioners, specifically for ceiling-type indoor units with model names RAV-RM401CTP-E, RAV-RM561CTP-E, RAV-RM801CTP-E, RAV-RM1101CTP-E, and RAV-RM1401CTP-E. These units are designed for commercial use and utilize either R32 or R410A refrigerant, both of which are HFC refrigerants that do not destroy the ozone layer. The manual emphasizes safety precautions, proper usage, maintenance, and troubleshooting for these split-type air conditioners.

Function Description

The Toshiba air conditioner is designed to provide cooling and heating for commercial spaces. It operates by absorbing heat from the outside and bringing it into the room during heating, a process known as a heat pump system. The unit features a wired remote controller capable of managing up to 8 indoor units, allowing for individual or group control of settings such as operation mode, temperature, fan speed, and wind direction.

Operation Modes:

  • Auto Mode: The unit automatically selects the operating mode (cooling, heating, or fan only) based on the user's set point temperature.
  • Cooling: Provides cooling when there is a demand, starting approximately 1 minute after mode selection.
  • Heating: Provides heating, starting approximately 3 to 5 minutes after mode selection. During defrost operation, the fan stops to prevent cool air discharge.
  • Dry (Dehumidify): Reduces humidity in the room.
  • Fan: Circulates air without cooling or heating.

Timer Operation: The unit offers three timer modes with settings up to 168 hours (7 days):

  • Off Timer: The unit stops when the set time is reached.
  • Repeat Off Timer: The unit stops daily when the set time is reached.
  • On Timer: The unit starts when the set time is reached.

Power Saving Mode: This mode limits the maximum current to save energy by restricting the compressor speed (capacity). The power level can be adjusted from 100% down to 50%, with a factory default of 75%. This mode remains active until manually cancelled.

8 °C Heating Operation: The air conditioner can maintain a heating temperature of about 8 °C, suitable for object pre-heating. This specific operation requires settings to be configured via the wired remote controller by an installer or dealer.

Usage Features

Wired Remote Controller: The remote controller features a display section showing operation mode, error codes, timer settings, louver position, filter reminders, fan speed, set temperature, and power saving mode. The operation section includes buttons for:

  • TEMP. (Temperature set button): Adjusts the set point.
  • TIMER SET (Timer set button): Sets up the timer.
  • FILTER RESET (Filter reset button): Resets the filter display after cleaning.
  • TEST (Test button): For service use only.
  • ON/OFF (On/Off button): Starts and stops operation.
  • MODE (Operation mode button): Selects desired operation mode.
  • FAN (Fan speed button): Selects desired fan speed (Auto, High, Med, Low).
  • VENT (Ventilation button): Used when a power ventilation kit is connected.
  • SAVE (Power save operation): Initiates power saving mode.
  • UNIT LOUVER (Unit / Louver select button): Selects a unit number and louver number for individual wind direction adjustment in multi-unit setups.
  • SWING/FIX (Swing / Louver direction button): Selects automatic swing or sets the louver direction.

Wind Direction Adjustment: Louvers (adjustment plates for up/down wind direction) can be adjusted for optimal performance.

  • Cooling: Direct louvers horizontally to prevent condensation and dripping.
  • Heating: Direct louvers downward to ensure hot air reaches the foot level.
  • Horizontal Air Flow: Vertical louvers inside the horizontal louver can be manually adjusted.

Initial Setup: When the unit is first powered on or after a long period of disuse, it's recommended to turn on the circuit breaker at least 12 hours before starting the air conditioner. The remote controller will display "SETTING" flashing while the model is automatically confirmed.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Periodic Checks: Regular checks are recommended to ensure efficient operation and prevent deterioration of parts, especially for units used for 8 hours or more daily. This includes checking for rust and scratches on the outdoor unit.
  • Professional Cleaning: Cleaning of the air conditioner (indoor and outdoor units) should be performed by a qualified installer or service person at least every 3 months. Improper cleaning can damage plastic parts, insulation, or other components, leading to malfunctions, water leakage, electric shock, smoke, or fire.
  • Drain Pan Cleaning: Clean the drain pan before the cooling season to prevent clogging, which can lead to overflow and water damage.

Air Filter Cleaning:

  • Clogged air filters reduce cooling and heating performance.
  • The remote controller will display a filter icon ("") as a reminder to clean the air filters.
  • After cleaning, push the filter reset button to clear the icon.
  • Cleaning the air filter involves working at heights and should be done by a qualified installer or service person.

Maintenance List (Visual/Auditory Checks & Maintenance Actions):

  • Heat exchanger: Check for dust/dirt clogging, scratches. Wash when clogged.
  • Fan motor: Check for sound. Take appropriate measures if abnormal sound occurs.
  • Filter: Check for dust/dirt, breakage. Wash with water when contaminated, replace when damaged.
  • Fan: Check for vibration, balance, dust/dirt, appearance. Replace when vibration/balance is terrible, brush or wash when contaminated.
  • Air intake / discharge grilles: Check for dust/dirt, scratches. Fix or replace when deformed or damaged.
  • Drain pan: Check for dust/dirt clogging, drain contamination. Clean and check slope for smooth drainage.
  • Ornamental panel, louvers: Check for dust/dirt, scratches. Wash when contaminated or apply repair coating.
  • Exterior: Check for rust, peeling of insulator, peeling/lift of coat. Apply repair coating.

When Not in Use for a Long Time:

  1. Perform fan operation for a couple of hours to dry the interior.
  2. Stop the unit with the ON/OFF button and turn off the circuit breaker.
  3. Clean and reinstall air filters.

Safety Precautions:

  • Only qualified installers or service persons should install, maintain, repair, or relocate the air conditioner to prevent electric shocks, fire, injury, or other problems.
  • Do not touch high-voltage areas or rotating parts inside the unit.
  • Do not use refrigerants other than specified.
  • Ensure proper ventilation when operating with combustion appliances.
  • Do not insert fingers or objects into air intake/discharge.
  • Turn off the circuit breaker before cleaning or if any trouble occurs.
  • Do not customize the unit.
  • Ensure proper drainage for the drain hose.
  • Connect to an exclusive power supply.
  • Fix the outdoor unit securely on its base.
  • Do not use the air conditioner for special purposes (e.g., preserving food, breeding animals).
  • Do not touch switches with wet fingers.
  • Turn off the main switch or circuit breaker if not used for a long time.
  • Do not wash the air conditioner with pressure washers.
  • Avoid placing water containers on the unit.
  • In snowy areas, ensure the outdoor unit is clear of snow and ice, and the drain hose is clear to prevent freezing.
