Overview

This document describes the TOSHIBA Microcomputer Induction Rice Cooker, Model RC-18ISPMY (1.8L), designed for home use.

Function Description:

The RC-18ISPMY is a microcomputer-controlled induction heating (IH) rice cooker that offers various cooking modes for different types of rice and other dishes. It features a 24-hour digital clock display, a timer function for pre-setting cooking times, and a "Keep Warm" function. The induction heating technology aims for even and efficient cooking.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: RC-18ISPMY
  • Voltage/Frequency: 220-240V~, 50/60Hz
  • Consumption Power (Cooking): 1300W
  • Consumption Power (Keep Warm): Average 20W
  • Rated Capacity: 5.0L
  • Max. Cooking Capacity (rice volume): 1.8L
  • Dimensions (Unit: cm): Length 36.7, Width 29, Height 24.7
  • Body Weight: 6.1kg
  • Power Cord Length: 1m
  • Special Purpose: AC 220-240V (not for other power sockets)

Usage Features:

The rice cooker offers a wide range of cooking modes and settings to cater to different preferences and ingredients:

  • Basic Rice Cooking:

    • Measurement: Uses an attached measuring cup (1 plain cup = 180ml, small cup = 90ml). Using a 200ml measuring cup may cause errors.
    • Washing Rice: Emphasizes washing rice quickly until water is clean, avoiding hot water or prolonged washing to prevent the smell of rice bran powder. Soft friction is recommended to avoid crushing rice grains.
    • Water Level Adjustment: Water volume is adjusted based on the number of rice cups, with a recommendation to stay within 1mm above or below the scale.
    • Soaking: The cooker automatically starts rice soaking after pressing the START (COOK) button, making pre-soaking unnecessary.
    • Delicious Rice Tips: Recommends using fresh white rice (within two weeks to one month), storing rice in a closed, dark place, and scarifying rice promptly after cooking to prevent clumping. Cold water is preferred for cooking in summer.
    • Water Quality: Advises against using mineral water with high hardness or alkaline ionized water (pH > 9) as it can make rice sticky or hard.
  • Cooking Modes (MENU Button):

    • Quick Cook: 18-35 minutes (18 min default), for 2-10 cups of white rice.
    • White Rice: 40-55 minutes (40 min default), for 2-10 cups of white rice.
    • Crispy Rice: 55-65 minutes (60 min default), for 2-5 cups of white rice.
    • Sticky Rice: 30-50 minutes (50 min default), for 2-6 cups of sticky rice.
    • Steam: 1-60 minutes (30 min default), for 0.5-2 cups (scale 2) of congee.
    • Congee: 45-120 minutes (45 min default), for 0.5-2 cups of congee.
    • Soup: 60-180 minutes (90 min default), for 0.5-2 cups of congee.
    • Sushi: 40-55 minutes (45 min default), for 2-10 cups of white rice.
  • Special Cooking Modes (SPECIAL Button):

    • Mixed Rice: 50-70 minutes (70 min default), for 2-6 cups of mixed rice.
    • Brown Rice: 65-85 minutes (80 min default), for 2-6 cups of brown rice.
    • GABA Rice: 220-240 minutes (240 min default), for 2-6 cups of brown rice.
    • Quinoa: 45-55 minutes (50 min default), for 2-6 cups of brown rice.
    • Oatmeal: 45-120 minutes (45 min default), for 0.5-2 cups of congee.
    • Slow Cook: 180-480 minutes (180 min default), for 0.5-2 cups (scale 2) of congee.
    • Onsen Egg: 30-38 minutes (30 min default).
    • Yogurt: 360-600 minutes (480 min default).
    • Healthy Rice: 40-55 minutes (40 min default), for 2-4 cups of healthy rice. This function requires using the healthy rice basket and has specific water level guidelines.
  • Timer (Pre-setting Cooking Time):

    • Allows setting a finish time for cooking, adjustable by hour and 10-minute increments.
    • The cooker memorizes the last appointment time.
    • Appointment cooking is not available for Onsen Egg, Yogurt, Quick Cook, White Rice, Crispy Rice, and Sticky Rice modes due to potential rice deterioration or corrosion.
    • Maximum appointment time is 14 hours (8 hours in summer).
  • Keep Warm Function:

    • Automatically activates after cooking.
    • Controls temperature based on usage conditions to maintain rice taste.
    • Not recommended for more than 8 hours to prevent unpleasant odor.
    • Reheating function is available (25 minutes), with the KEEP WARM light flickering during reheating.
  • Clock Adjustment:

    • The clock is a 24-hour display.
    • Press and hold the TIMER button for more than 2 seconds to enter adjustment mode.
    • Use HR. and MIN. buttons to adjust the time.
    • Press COOK or wait 5 seconds to confirm.
    • Lithium batteries inside the cooker maintain clock and cooking mode memory during power outages. If batteries run down, the display will disappear, and the clock will flicker 12:00 after power is restored, requiring manual adjustment.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning and proper handling are crucial for the cooker's longevity and performance.

  • General Cleaning:

    • Unplug the power cord and allow the body to cool before cleaning.
    • Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or harsh chemicals (gasoline, thinner, alcohol, bleach). Use neutral detergents for kitchenware.
    • Wipe the body with a dry duster cloth. Avoid spraying water on operating parts or covers.
    • Regularly remove dust from the power plug with a dry cloth to prevent fire hazards.
  • Detachable Inner Lid and Steam Valve:

    • These parts should be removed and cleaned after each use, especially after cooking with seasoning.
    • To remove the inner lid: Push the inner cover slider to the right, then pull up the handle.
    • To install the inner lid: Lean and insert into the slot, then push and press the handle until a "clicking" sound is heard.
    • The steam valve can be disassembled by opening a small buckle.
    • Clean any foreign matters from the sealing ring and the opening button seat.
  • Inner Cooking Pot:

    • Wash with a sponge and neutral detergent.
    • Do not use the inner pot on a gas stove, induction cooker, or in a microwave oven.
    • Avoid bumping or dropping the inner pot on hard surfaces.
    • Do not damage the fluororesin coating on the inner surface. Avoid using metal utensils, scrubbing brushes, or harsh detergents.
    • If the coating is scratched on the outside, it does not affect cooking or heat preservation.
  • Temperature Sensor and Suction/Exhaust Ports:

    • Clean any dirt or foreign matters from the temperature sensor on the upper housing and the suction/exhaust ports at the bottom of the body using a cotton rod.
    • Ensure no foreign matters are attached to the outside of the inner cooking pot or the inner cover washer, as this can affect cooking performance.
  • Unpleasant Odor Removal:

    • If an unpleasant odor is detected, fill the inner pot with water (to the "1" mark for White Rice), close the cover, select "QUICK COOK," and press "COOK." After 35 minutes, when it switches to "Keep Warm," press "CANCEL," then clean and dry all parts after the body cools.
  • Troubleshooting (Error Display):

    • E2, E4: Clean dust from suction/exhaust port, ensure the cooker is not placed on soft surfaces that block airflow, and verify the inner pot is correctly placed and dedicated.
    • E1-E6.EU: Indicates a fault in the circuit board or sensor. Stop use, unplug, and consult a retailer for repair.
  • Power Outage:

    • The cooker can continue cooking/keep warm after power is restored, but cooking time may be delayed.
    • If lithium batteries are run down, the clock and cooking mode memory will be lost. Batteries should be replaced by an authorized service center.

Safety Instructions:

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions to prevent fire, scalds, electric shock, and other hazards:

  • Always use the power plug, power cord, and power socket correctly.
  • Do not use damaged power cords or loose sockets.
  • Do not plug/unplug with wet hands.
  • Use a dedicated power socket (AC 220-240V, 10A or more).
  • Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and clean.
  • Do not place the power cord where children can reach it or where it can be tripped over.
  • Use a grounded power socket.
  • Do not disassemble, repair, or modify the appliance.
  • Stop using immediately if the power plug/cord is hot, there's a burning smell, or parts are cracked/loose/deformed.
  • Do not wash the cooker body, power plug, or power cord with water.
  • Do not put foreign objects into air inlets/outlets.
  • Avoid touching high-temperature parts (inner pot, lid, steam valve) during and shortly after use.
  • Do not move the cooker while in use or open the lid during cooking.
  • Do not place hands or face near the steam vent due to high-temperature steam.
  • Ensure the steam valve is properly installed.
  • Avoid cooking dishes that may overflow, bubble sharply, or are very sticky (e.g., cream dessert, beans, noodles, baking soda dishes, curries, oily dishes).
  • Do not use for purposes other than described in the manual.
  • Do not place the cooker in direct sunlight, oily areas, or near walls/furniture without adequate ventilation.
  • Do not cover the upper housing or steam valve with cloths.
  • The product is for household use only, not commercial use.
