appliance is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the appliance; if it will not fit t
he
outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified technician.
Do not operate any appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, or if it is malfunctioning or if it is
damaged in any manner.
Always unplug the appliance from the outlet before putting on or taking off parts, before cleaning or
when not in use.
Connect only to a circuit that is protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI).
Risk of Electric Shock - Do not use the UV filter if the quartz tubing around the lamp is broken.
Immediately unplug and seek an authorized repair service or discard the unit.
GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS This appliance must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or
breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance fo

Overview

This document describes the TotalPond Pressurized Filter, model #52236 / PF1200UV, designed for ponds up to 1200 gallons. It includes assembly instructions, maintenance guidelines, and troubleshooting information for the filter and its integrated UV clarifier.

Function Description

The TotalPond Pressurized Filter is a pond filtration system that combines mechanical and biological filtration with a UV clarifier to maintain clear and healthy pond water. It is designed to remove physical debris, support beneficial bacteria for biological filtration, and eliminate green water caused by single-celled algae using ultraviolet light. The system operates under pressure, allowing for flexible placement and connection to water features.

Important Technical Specifications

The integrated UV clarifier has the following specifications:

  • Lamp Voltage: 60V
  • Lamp Current: 0.2A
  • Lamp Power: 9 W
  • Rated Frequency: 60 Hz
  • UV Irradiance: 23 μW/cm²
  • Bulb Life: 8000 hours
  • Bulb Item Number: UVRB
  • UV Wave Length: UV(C) : 254 nm

The filter is compatible with 1 inch or 3/4 inch ID tubing (pump and tubing are NOT INCLUDED). The appliance must be grounded and connected to a circuit protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI).

Usage Features

The filter system includes several components for effective operation:

  • Tank with UV clarifier (Part A): The main housing for the filtration media and UV lamp.
  • Bio media balls (Part E): Provide surface area for beneficial bacteria, essential for biological filtration. There are 12 bio media balls included.
  • Coarse filter (Part F): A black filter pad designed to trap larger particles.
  • Fine filter (Part G): A blue filter pad designed to trap smaller debris.
  • Adapters (Parts H, K) and Gaskets (Parts I, L): For connecting tubing to the filter. The main adapter (H) can be cut for either 1 inch or 3/4 inch ID tubing.
  • Locking ring (Part J): Secures the adapter and gasket assembly.
  • Cover (Part C) and Lid (Part D): Seal the filter tank, with an O-ring (Part B) ensuring a watertight seal.
  • UV Clarifier Safety Feature: The UV light will only turn on if the lamp holder is fully seated into the lamp housing, preventing accidental UV exposure. An indicator light confirms the UV lamp is functioning.

Assembly Process:

  1. Tubing Connection: Adapters are assembled with gaskets and locking rings. The adapter can be cut for 1-inch or 3/4-inch tubing.
  2. Media Placement: Bio-balls are placed inside the filter, followed by the fine filter pad (blue) and then the coarse filter pad (black).
  3. Sealing: The cover with an O-ring (flat side down) is placed on the tank, and the lid is screwed on securely to prevent leaks.
  4. Power Connection: The UV clarifier plug is connected to a properly grounded GFCI electrical outlet.
  5. Pump Connection: A pump (not included) connects to the filter's inlet (upper hole), and tubing from the filter's outlet (lower hole) connects to a water feature.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the filter's performance:

Pressure Filter Maintenance:

  • Filter Pad Cleaning: The coarse (black) and fine (blue) filter pads should be removed and washed with clean water when visibly soiled.
  • Filter Pad Replacement: Filter pads should be replaced annually. TotalPond Replacement Filter item #RF13026 is recommended.
  • Bio Ball and Filter Box Cleaning: At least once a year, the entire system (including bio balls and inside surfaces of the filter box) should be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly using warm, soapy (biodegradable) water. This should be done in early spring before water temperatures rise to allow beneficial bacteria to re-establish. Avoid cleaning during the warm season as it can take up to 8 weeks for the environmental balance to re-establish.
  • Exterior Cleaning: The exterior surface of the filter box may also require occasional cleaning. Do not use chemicals that could harm beneficial bacteria.

UV Clarifier Maintenance:

  • Disassembly for Cleaning: Periodically disassemble the unit to clean dirt and debris from the exterior of the glass tube.
    1. Disconnect the UV light from the outlet and allow it to cool.
    2. Unscrew the locking ring and pull out the light unit.
    3. Carefully pull out the glass tube holder by twisting.
    4. Clean the glass tube with warm, soapy (biodegradable) water.
    5. Reassemble, ensuring all gaskets and O-rings are properly seated and the unit is completely dry to prevent water leakage.
  • Bulb Replacement: The UV bulb should be replaced annually or when it burns out. TotalPond replacement UV bulbs (item #UVRB) are available.
    1. Disconnect power and allow the light to cool.
    2. Rotate the locking ring counterclockwise to remove the lamp holder.
    3. Carefully pull out the old bulb from its base and install the new bulb.
    4. Reinstall the lamp holder and locking ring, ensuring the lamp holder is fully seated for the safety feature to allow the light to turn on.
    5. Reconnect power and check the indicator light.

Troubleshooting (UV Clarifier):

  • If the light fails to operate, check:
    • If the power cord is plugged in and receiving power.
    • If the lamp holder is screwed completely into the body (due to the safety feature).
    • If the bulb has burned out and needs replacement.

Safety Warnings:

  • Electric Shock Risk: Improper grounding can cause electric shock. Ensure proper grounding and GFCI protection. Do not modify the plug. Unplug before maintenance.
  • UV Radiation Danger: UV light can cause irritation to skin and eyes. Avoid exposure. Disconnect power before replacing the lamp. Prolonged exposure can cause severe damage. Do not use if the quartz tubing around the lamp is broken.
  • Heat: Keep the cord away from high temperatures.
  • Lifting: Do not lift the light or transformer by its power cord.
  • Application: Not investigated for use in swimming pools or hot tubs.
  • Assembly: Do not operate unless fully assembled with the lamp base screwed completely into the housing.

Warranty:

  • All pumps and electrical products are warranted for 1 year against defective material and workmanship under normal working conditions.
  • Other TotalPond products are warranted for 90 days.
  • Warranty claims require calling customer service (1-888-412-6001) for authorization to return defective parts, freight pre-paid, with proof of purchase.
  • Warranty covers only properly installed and maintained units pumping fresh water.
