A. GENERAL INFORMATION
WARNING
!
THIS INFORMATION IS FOR USE BY INDIVIDUALS HAVING
ADEQUATE BACKGROUNDS OF ELECTRICAL AND MECHANI-
CAL EXPERIENCE. ANY ATTEMPT TO REPAIR A CENTRAL
AIR CONDITIONING PRODUCT MAY RESULT IN PER-
SONAL INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. THE MANU-
FACTURER OR SELLER CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
THE INTERPRETATION OF THIS INFORMATION, NOR CAN
IT ASSUME ANY LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH ITS USE.
CAUTION
!
To prevent shortening its service life, the air handler should
not be used during the finishing phases of construction. The
low return air temperatures can lead to the formation of con-
densate. Condensate in the presence of chlorides and fluo-
rides from paint, varnish, stains, adhesives, cleaning com-
pounds, and cement creates a corrosive condition which may
cause rapid deterioration of the cabinet and internal compo-
nents.
These instructions do not cover all variations in systems or
provide for every possible contingency. Should further in-
formation be desired or particular problems arise which
are not covered sufficiently by this manual, contact your
local distributor or the manufacturer as listed on the air
handler nameplate.
These Air Handlers are shipped from the factory in the
upflow or horizontal right configuration and are fully con-
vertible to downflow or horizontal left. Refer to Section B
beginning on page 3 for additional information.
INSPECTION
Check carefully for any shipping damage. This must be re-
ported to and claims made against the transportation com-
pany immediately. Check to be sure all major components
are in the unit. Any missing parts should be reported to
your supplier at once, and replaced with authorized parts
only.

INSTALLATION LIMITATIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
The general location of the air handler is normally se-
lected by the architect, contractor and/or home owner for
the most effective application and satisfaction.
These air handlers are suitable for installation in a
closet, alcove or utility room with free, non-ducted, air
return, using the area space as a return air plenum.
With ducted supply air, if the minimum clearances to
combustible materials and service access are observed,
the above installations are suitable.
NOTE: Condensation may occur on the
surface of the air handler when installed in
an unconditioned location. When units
are installed in unconditioned spaces,
verify that all electrical and refrigerant line
penetrations on the air handler are sealed
completely.
This area may also be used for other purposes, includ-
ing an electric hot water heater - but in no case shall

Overview

This document is an installer's guide for Convertible Variable Speed Air Handlers ranging from 2 1/2 to 5 tons, specifically models TWE031E13FB, TWE037E13FB, TWE040E13FB, TWE049E13FB, and TWE065E13FB.

Function Description

These air handlers are designed for use in central air conditioning systems. They feature variable speed operation, allowing for precise control over airflow and enhanced comfort. The units are convertible, meaning they can be installed in multiple configurations: upflow, downflow, horizontal left, or horizontal right, providing flexibility for various installation requirements. They are suitable for both cooling-only and heat pump systems, with provisions for supplementary electric heaters. The variable speed motor contributes to improved comfort, quietness, and potential energy savings by ramping up and down blower speeds.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models Covered: TWE031E13FB, TWE037E13FB, TWE040E13FB, TWE049E13FB, TWE065E13FB.
  • Tonnage: 2 1/2 to 5 tons.
  • Voltage: Shipped wired for 230 volts, convertible to 208 volts.
  • Drain Connections: Primary drain is 3/4" NPT. Two secondary drain connections are provided for different orientations.
  • Refrigerant Piping: Connections are made outside the cabinet. TXV bulb protection is crucial during brazing. Refrigerant lines must be sealed.
  • Duct Connections: Convertible duct flanges are provided for 3/4" or 1-1/2" duct board applications. Supply and return air ducts should be connected with flame retardant connectors.
  • Clearances: Minimum clearances to combustible materials and service access must be maintained as stated on the air handler rating nameplate. For horizontal installations, an auxiliary drain pan is recommended.
  • Motor: Direct drive variable speed motor with permanently lubricated bearings.

Usage Features

  • Convertible Configurations: The units are factory-shipped in upflow or horizontal right configurations but are fully convertible to downflow or horizontal left. This adaptability allows for installation in various spaces such as closets, alcoves, utility rooms, attics, garages, or crawl spaces.
  • Airflow Adjustment: Airflow settings are controlled via DIP switches on the ICM Fan Control board. These switches allow matching airflow to the outdoor unit size, adjusting cooling airflow, setting fan off-delay options, and adjusting heating airflow. An "ENHANCED MODE" selection provides ramping up and down of blower speed for improved comfort and energy savings.
  • Supplementary Heat: Provisions for field-installed electric heaters are included. Only American Standard Inc. approved heaters should be used. When heaters are installed, specific sub-bases (TAYBASE100, TAYBASE101, TAYBASE102) are required for downflow installations on combustible flooring.
  • Humidistat Integration: The unit supports an optional humidistat, which can be integrated by removing a jumper on the low voltage terminal board and connecting the humidistat between R and BK.
  • Blower Off-Delay: The FAN-OFF period can be adjusted using DIP switches #5 and #6, offering options for no delay, 1.5 minutes, or 3 minutes, and an enhanced mode for ramping.
  • Filter Maintenance: For horizontal applications, a properly sized remote filter and grille are recommended for ease of filter maintenance, and the factory-installed filter should be removed.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Access: The design allows for easy removal of the filter access panel and filter. Regular checking and replacement of filters are essential for optimal performance.
  • Condensate Drain: The primary drain line must be trapped with a minimum 2" water seal to ensure proper drainage and prevent negative pressure issues. Field-fabricated or manufactured traps are acceptable. A clean-out tee or cross is recommended in the primary drain line for future maintenance. Drain lines should be sloped downward at a minimum of 1/4" per foot and insulated to prevent sweating. Means for drainage to prevent winter freeze-up are also important.
  • Sealing: All openings where field wiring enters the cabinet must be completely sealed using 2.5" clear stickers to seal unused electrical knockouts and cage nut openings. This is particularly important for units installed in unconditioned spaces to prevent condensation. Refrigerant line penetrations also need to be sealed.
  • Brazing Shield: A brazing shield is provided to protect the refrigerant fittings and TXV bulb during brazing, preventing overheating that could affect the unit's performance.
  • Inspection: Regular inspection for shipping damage, missing parts, and proper installation of all components is crucial.
  • Checkout Procedures: A comprehensive checklist is provided for post-installation verification, including checking wiring, drain pan installation, filter size, system operation, and instructing the owner on proper use and care.
  • No Lubrication Required: The direct drive motors have permanently lubricated bearings, eliminating the need for additional lubrication under normal use.
