Overview

The provided document is an owner's manual for the Traxxas TRX-4 Sport remote-controlled vehicle, model number 82024-4. It's designed as a rugged, powerful, and versatile R/C crawler, ready for tough terrain and all-day driving.

Function Description

The TRX-4 Sport is a 1/10 scale electric remote-controlled crawler designed for off-road driving, particularly rock crawling and trail running. It features a 2.4GHz radio system for control, allowing multiple models to be raced simultaneously without frequency conflicts. The vehicle is equipped with a powerful electronic speed control (ESC) and motor, and its design emphasizes durability and performance in challenging environments. Key features include portal axles for increased ground clearance, a rigid steel frame for chassis stability, and waterproof electronics for all-weather capability. The radio system includes fail-safe functionality to prevent loss of control in case of signal loss.

  • Batteries (Transmitter): 4 AA alkaline batteries (not included).
  • Servos: Single metal gear steering servo.

Usage Features

Quick Start: The manual provides a "Quick Start" guide for rapid setup, covering safety precautions, battery installation (transmitter and model), servo check, range test, decal application, driving, and maintenance.

Battery Compatibility: The XL-5 HV ESC is compatible with both NiMH (6-7 cells) and LiPo (2s/3s) batteries. Traxxas Power Cell iD batteries are recommended for optimal performance and safer charging, especially when paired with Traxxas EZ-Peak iD chargers which automatically recognize and optimize charge settings. Users are strongly warned about the fire hazard associated with LiPo batteries and the necessity of using a LiPo balance charger with a balance adapter port. Low-Voltage Detection on the ESC is crucial for LiPo battery use to prevent over-discharging.

Waterproof Electronics: The TRX-4 Sport features water-resistant electronics (receiver, servos, ESC), allowing operation in wet conditions like puddles, wet grass, and snow. However, it is not submersible, and additional care and maintenance are required after wet use to prevent corrosion.

Adjustable Performance Modes (XL-5 HV ESC Profiles): The ESC offers several driving profiles to suit different skill levels and terrains:

  • Profile #1 (Sport Mode): 100% Forward, 100% Brakes, 100% Reverse. Provides full power without additional brake drag.
  • Profile #2 (Race Mode): 100% Forward, 100% Brakes, No Reverse. Disables reverse for race conditions.
  • Profile #3 (Training Mode): 50% Forward, 100% Brakes, 50% Reverse. Reduces power output by 50% for beginning drivers.
  • Profile #4 (Trail Mode): 100% Forward, 100% Brakes, 100% Reverse; Drag Brake at Neutral. Factory default, includes brake drag at neutral for crawling.
  • Profile #5 (Crawl Mode): 100% Forward, Hill Hold Brakes at Neutral, Immediate Reverse. Provides hill hold brakes and immediate reverse for technical crawling.

Gearing Options: The TRX-4 Sport offers a wide range of gearing options to tune for acceleration or top speed. Smaller pinion gears (fewer teeth) provide more acceleration and lower top speed, while larger pinion gears provide less acceleration and higher top speed. A gearing compatibility chart is provided to guide users, with warnings against over-gearing which can lead to motor/ESC overheating.

Suspension Tuning:

  • Springs: Factory-equipped with 0.30 rate (white stripe) springs. Lighter springs can be used with lighter bodies to increase traction and articulation.
  • Ride Height Adjustment: Tuned via preload adjusters on the shock bodies.
  • Shock Oil: Damping can be adjusted by changing the viscosity of the silicone shock oil. Factory-filled with 20W silicone oil.

Slipper Clutch Adjustment: The slipper clutch can be adjusted to protect the motor and drivetrain. Factory settings are restored by tightening the adjustment nut until all four spring washers are flat, then an additional 1/16 turn.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Post-Run Cooling: Allow the model to cool for several minutes between runs, especially with high-capacity battery packs.
  • Battery Monitoring: Discontinue operation at the first sign of weak batteries (slow operation, sluggish servos, flashing red light on transmitter) to avoid loss of control.
  • Hardware Check: Frequently check wheel nuts and other screws for tightness due to vibrations.
  • Cleaning: Keep the chassis clean of dirt and grime.
  • Motor Maintenance: Every 10-15 runs, remove, clean with aerosol motor cleaner, and re-oil bushings with lightweight motor oil.
  • Shock Maintenance: Keep shock oil levels full (using 100% pure silicone oil). Inspect o-rings for damage. Rebuild kit (part #8262) available.
  • Suspension Inspection: Periodically check for bent rod ends, linkage rods, shock shafts, loose screws, or signs of stress.
  • Driveline Inspection: Check for wear, dirt, or corrosion in drive shafts and constant-velocity joints. Lubricate pins and cross pins with light-weight machine oil. Inspect spur gear and pinion gear for wear and tightness.
  • Slipper Clutch Pads: Inspect friction material thickness; replace if 0.35mm or less.

Wet Conditions Maintenance:

  • Post-Run Cleaning: Rinse dirt and mud off the truck with low-pressure water. Blow off with compressed air (optional).
  • Lubrication: Spray all bearings, drivetrain, and fasteners with WD-40® or similar water-displacing light oil.
  • Drying: Allow the truck to dry in a warm, sunny spot or use compressed air.
  • Receiver Box: Remove the sealed receiver box cover during storage to allow air to dry and prevent moisture buildup, which can cause long-term problems with electronics.

Receiver Box Watertight Seal Maintenance:

  • Disassembly/Reassembly: Instructions provided for removing and installing the receiver while maintaining the watertight seal, including applying silicone grease to the wire clamp and ensuring proper o-ring seating.

Antenna Setup: Instructions for proper antenna installation to maximize radio range, emphasizing not to kink, cut, or wrap the antenna wire.

Servo Horn and Steering Linkage Adjustment: Procedures for adjusting the drag link and steering link lengths (133.2mm and 77.3mm respectively) and positioning the servo horn for correct steering geometry.
