Overview

The Triplett ET330 is a Non-Contact AC Voltage Detector designed for both industrial and home use, offering a safe and convenient way to detect AC voltage and magnetic fields. It incorporates a built-in flashlight and an acousto-optic synchronous alarm function to enhance user safety and usability.

Function Description:

The primary function of the ET330 is to detect AC voltage without physical contact. It operates in two main voltage detection modes:

  • Low voltage mode (24V AC ~ 1000V AC): This mode is suitable for detecting weaker electromagnetic AC signals and lower voltage applications. It is recommended for testing low-voltage motors (under 90V), audio systems, arc welding machines, underground mine lighting, and cables with thick insulation layers. In this mode, the detector is more sensitive to electrical interference/noise, so it should be used in environments with weak electrical fields.
  • High voltage mode (90V AC ~ 1000V AC): This is the default mode when the detector is turned on. It is designed for detecting urban electric supply and three-phase systems, such as those found in power distribution units, electrical panels, and various electrical appliances.

In addition to voltage detection, the ET330 also features a magnetic field detection mode. When in this mode, voltage detection is not active.

The device provides an acousto-optic synchronous alarm, meaning it uses both audible beeps and visual LED indicators to signal the presence of voltage. The frequency of the LED flashes and audible beeps increases as the detector gets closer to the voltage source. A built-in flashlight aids in working in dimly lit environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • AC Voltage Range:
    • High Voltage Mode: 90~1000V AC (indicated by a red light)
    • Low Voltage Mode: 24~1000V AC (indicated by a green light)
  • Frequency Range: 50Hz/60Hz
  • Alarm Mode: Audio/visual
  • Flashlight: White spotlight
  • Auto Power Off: Approximately 5 minutes of inactivity
  • Low Battery Indication: Activates when battery voltage drops below 2.4V, leading to automatic shutdown.
  • Safety Class: CAT IV 1000V, ensuring high safety standards for industrial applications.
  • Operating Temperature: 0~40°C
  • Storage Temperature: -20~50°C
  • Humidity: ≤80% (non-condensing)
  • Altitude: <2000m
  • Battery: 2x1.5V AAA
  • Product Size: 150x18x23 (mm)
  • Weight: Approximately 50g
  • Drop Test: Withstands drops from 1m
  • Standards: Complies with IEC/EN61010-1 and IEC/EN 61010-2-030, and carries the CE mark, indicating compliance with European Union directives. It is also Intertek certified (4007682).

Usage Features:

  • Turning On: A short press of the power button activates the detector. It beeps twice, and the red indicator light illuminates, signifying it's ready in high voltage mode (90-1000V).
  • Flashlight Operation: A short press of the flashlight button toggles the flashlight on or off. The flashlight automatically turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity.
  • AC Voltage Detection: To detect AC voltage, the sensor head is placed near the test object or power socket. The presence of AC voltage triggers the red LED in the tip and an audible buzzer, with increasing frequency as the detector approaches the source. It is advised to unplug other electrical devices from a socket before detection to avoid interference.
  • Detection Range Selection:
    • From high voltage mode (red light), a short press of the power button switches to low voltage mode (green light, 24-1000V).
    • Another short press of the power button switches to magnetic field detection mode (yellow light). In this mode, voltage detection is disabled.
  • Auto Power Off: The detector conserves battery by automatically shutting down after 5 minutes of non-use.
  • Manual Power Off: The device can be manually turned off by long-pressing the power button for 2 seconds.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are strongly advised to read and understand all warnings and operating instructions. It's crucial to test the detector on a known live source before use and to stop using it immediately if it appears damaged or malfunctions. The device should not be used to detect voltages higher than 1000V, and caution is advised when measuring AC voltage above 30V. Users should be aware that voltage may still be present even without an alarm, and various factors like insulation type, wire thickness, distance, shielding, and socket design can affect test results. It's also important not to assume neutral or ground wires are safe to touch, as incorrect wiring can charge them. The detector may not detect voltage if the wire is shielded, the operator is not grounded, the voltage is DC, the operator is not holding the detector, is wearing gloves, the wire is partially buried or in a grounded metal conduit, the magnetic field is blocked/suppressed/interfered with, or the voltage frequency is not a perfect sine wave.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The ET330 uses two 1.5V AAA batteries. To replace them, hold the detector with one hand, press down on the battery compartment latch with the thumb of the other hand, and pull out the end of the detector. Then, pull out the end of the detector further along the indicated direction to access and replace the batteries.
  • Warranty: Triplett / Jewell Instruments provides a one-year warranty to the original purchaser against defects in workmanship and material from the date of purchase. This warranty does not cover products repaired or altered by unauthorized persons, purchased from unauthorized distributors, or subjected to misuse, abuse, misapplication, negligence, accident, or those with altered/defaced/removed serial numbers. Accessories, including batteries, are also not covered by the warranty.
