Overview

The TrueSharp Power Rotary Blade Sharpener is a device designed to extend the life of rotary blades by sharpening them safely, conveniently, and effectively. It is specifically engineered to hone dull blades to a near factory-sharp edge, though it cannot achieve a factory-polished edge or sharpen brand-new blades. The device is also not always able to repair damage and nicks caused by pins or other objects.

Function Description:

The TrueSharp sharpener uses a rotary mechanism to sharpen blades. It features sharpening stones that, when activated, rotate against the blade to remove dullness and restore a sharp edge. The process involves placing a blade on a blade tray, closing the lid, and pressing a button to initiate the sharpening cycle. The device is designed for use with oil, which saturates the sharpening stones to optimize the sharpening process.

Important Technical Specifications:

The device includes several key components:

  • Sharpener Unit: The main body of the device, housing the motor, sharpening stones, and blade tray.
  • Sharpening Stones: Two coarse stones are provided, which are essential for the sharpening process. These stones are designed to be rotated or replaced as they wear down.
  • Blade Tray: A designated area within the sharpener where the rotary blade is placed for sharpening. It features slots to ensure the blade is centered.
  • Lever: Used in conjunction with the blade remover to facilitate the removal of the sharpened blade.
  • Latch: Secures the lid in a closed position, engaging a lock for storage.
  • Power Supply: Required to operate the sharpener.
  • Blade Remover: A tool used to safely remove blades from the sharpener after use.
  • Cleaning Cloth: For general maintenance and cleaning.
  • Oil: Essential for saturating the sharpening stones before initial use and for applying during each sharpening session.
  • Allen Wrench: Likely used for maintenance tasks, such as loosening or tightening set screws for stone removal.
  • Instructions: A manual detailing the operation and maintenance of the device.

Usage Features:

  1. Initial Setup: Before first use, the sharpening stones must be saturated with oil. This involves dropping oil onto the stone's surface until it no longer absorbs and begins to pool. For the upper stone, the sharpener should be tilted back with the lid cupped in hand until it is parallel with the floor to allow for oil application.
  2. Power Connection: The sharpener must be plugged in to operate.
  3. Blade Placement: Open the sharpener, place a drop of oil on the sharpening stones, and then place a blade on the blade tray, ensuring it is centered in one of the slots.
  4. Sharpening Process:
    • Close the lid slowly, being careful not to dislodge the blade.
    • Hold down the lid and press the button for 30 seconds.
    • Lift the lid, apply another drop of oil to the stones, and repeat the 30-second sharpening process.
    • Flipping the blade after each 30-second interval can reduce the overall sharpening time.
  5. Addressing Dullness Levels:
    • Slightly Dull Blades: For blades that cut fabric but not effectively through multiple layers, one sharpening cycle (as described in step 4) is generally sufficient.
    • Moderately Dull Blades: Blades with small flat spots or nicks, resulting in inconsistent cutting, typically require two to three sharpening cycles.
    • Very Dull Blades: Blades with visible nicks or flat spots that prevent consistent cutting of even a single layer of fabric require a more intensive process:
      • Replace the fine sharpening stones with the coarse-grit stones provided in the kit.
      • Perform sharpening cycles until all visible nicks or flat spots are removed.
      • Replace the coarse stones with the fine stones.
      • Perform two additional sharpening cycles with the fine stones to finish the process.
  6. Blade Removal: After sharpening, open the lid, press the lever, and use the blade remover tool to safely take out the blade.
  7. Storage: To store the sharpener, close and lock the lid by holding it down with one hand while sliding the latch up to engage the lock.

Maintenance Features:

  • Stone Rotation and Cleaning: Metal filings accumulate on the sharpening stones during use, which can reduce effectiveness. Regularly rotating the stones to a clean face or cleaning them will yield the best results.
  • Stone Removal: To remove a stone, loosen the set screw holding it in place (without completely removing the screw). Grasp the end closest to the center of the sharpener and lift the stone out.
  • Stone Rotation (for clean surface): Once removed, rotate the stone to expose a clean surface.
  • Stone Reinstallation: Insert the stone back into the sharpener and re-tighten the set screw to secure it.
  • Deep Cleaning: If no clean surfaces remain on the stone, remove it and clean it under running water.
  • Replacement: If the sharpening stones become worn or chipped, replacement stones can be purchased through a TrueCut dealer.
