GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 4.2 K-factor, Model F978 Design-
er Residential Concealed Pendent
Sprinklers (Ref. Figure A) are auto-
matic sprinklers of the frangible bulb
type. They are to be used in;
•
wet pipe residential sprinkler sys-
tems for one- and two-family dwell-
ings and mobile homes per NFPA
13D,
•
wet pipe residential sprinkler sys-
tems for residential occupancies up
to four stories in height per NFPA
13R, and
•
wet pipe sprinkler systems for the
residential portions of any occu-
pancy per NFPA 13.
The small Cover Plate is flat, to blend
in with the ceiling for an aesthetically
pleasing and relatively unnoticeable
appearance. Standard finishes for the
Cover Plate are painted white and
satin chrome plated. Other factory ap-
plied painted finishes for the Cover
Plate are available on special order.
The separable two-piece design of the
Cover Plate and Mounting Cup As-
semblies allows installation of the
sprinklers and pressure testing of the
fire protection system prior to installa-
tion of a suspended ceiling or applica-
tion of the finish coating to a fixed
ceiling. They also permit removal of
suspended ceiling panels for access to
building service equipment, without
having to first shut down the fire pro-
tection system and remove sprinklers.
Also, the separable two-piece design
of the the F978 Sprinkler provides for
1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of vertical adjust-
ment, to reduce the accuracy to which
the length of fixed pipe drops to the
Sprinklers must be cut.
The F978 Sprinkler is shipped with a
Disposable Protective Cap as shown
in Figure B. The Protective Cap is tem-
porarily removed to install the F978,
and then replaced to protect the F978
while the ceiling is being installed and
finished. The tip of the Cap can also be
used to mark the center of the ceiling
hole into plaster board, ceiling tiles,
etc. by pushing the ceiling product
against the Cap. When the ceiling in-
stallation is complete, the Cap is re-
moved and the Cover Plate Assembly
installed.
The F978 Sprinklers have been de-
signed to operate with a particular tem-
perature rating and heat responsive
thermal characteristic, as well as to
discharge water in a specific pattern
and quantity per square foot relation-
ship. The combination of the perform-
ance characteristics which are associ-
ated with the F978 Sprinklers have
been proven to help in the control of
residential type fires and, therefore, to
improve the chance for occupants to
escape or be evacuated.
Fire sprinkler systems are not a substi-
tute for intelligent fire safety aware-
ness or construction materials and
practices required by building codes.
APPROVALS AND STANDARDS
The 4.2 K-factor, Model F978 Design-
er Residential Concealed Pendent
Sprinklers are listed by Underwriters
Laboratories Inc. and Underwriters’
Laboratories of Canada. The listing
only applies to the service conditions
indicated in the General Technical
Data and Residential Design Criteria
sections.
The Model F978 Designer Residential
Concealed Pendent Sprinklers are ap-
proved by the Scientific Services
Laboratory (Australia).
The Model F978 Designer Residential
Concealed Pendent Sprinklers are ac-
cepted by the City of New York under
MEA 39-92-M.
