Overview

The TYCO Model 3002 CPVC Sprinkler Head Adapter (SHA) Fitting Holdback Wrench is a specialized tool designed to facilitate the removal of sprinklers installed in finished ceilings within CPVC fire sprinkler piping systems. Its primary function is to provide a holdback on the sprinkler head adapter fitting, allowing a separate sprinkler wrench to safely remove the sprinkler.

Function Description

The Model 3002 SHA Holdback Wrench works by engaging the sprinkler head adapter fitting, providing a counter-torque that prevents the fitting from rotating while the sprinkler itself is unscrewed. This is crucial in CPVC systems, where the inherent flexibility of the pipe and fittings necessitates proper restraint during sprinkler removal to prevent damage to the piping system or structure.

The tool is specifically designed for use with TYCO CPVC sprinkler head adapter fittings. It accepts a 3/8 inch drive socket wrench, which can be either a ratchet or fixed type, to apply the necessary force. When removing a sprinkler, the process typically involves two people: one to immobilize the sprinkler head adapter and piping with the holdback wrench, and the second to remove the sprinkler with a dedicated sprinkler wrench.

Important Technical Specifications

The Model 3002 CPVC Sprinkler Head Adapter Fitting Holdback Wrench is comprised of several key components:

  • 3/8 in. Drive Socket Extension: This custom-sized extension, approximately 9-1/2 inches long, provides the leverage and connection point for a standard 3/8 inch drive socket wrench.
  • Roller Chain: The chain is the part that engages the sprinkler head adapter fitting. The wrench is furnished with one roller chain and two replacement chains.
  • End Cap: This component secures the roller chain to the drive socket extension.
  • Button Head Screw: A 1/4-28 x 1/4 inch long button head cap screw is used to fasten the end cap to the drive socket extension.

Usage Features

The operation of the Model 3002 Holdback Wrench involves a multi-step procedure:

  1. Preparation: Before starting, the fire protection system's main control valve must be closed, and the system depressurized and properly drained. Permission to shut down the system must be obtained from authorities, and all affected personnel notified. The work area should be free of debris.
  2. Access: If a recessed sprinkler is being removed, the escutcheon closure must first be removed. The sprinkler clearance hole in the ceiling may need to be enlarged to accommodate the holdback wrench, often requiring a keyhole saw or similar tool. It's crucial to check for obstructions or electrical lines in the ceiling area before cutting.
  3. Engagement: The wrench chain is spread into a circular arrangement and inserted through the enlarged sprinkler clearance hole.
  4. Securing the Fitting: One person engages the chain onto the SHA fitting's brass hex insert, applying clockwise tension to hold it in place and remove slack. This prevents wrench slippage and potential damage to the CPVC adapter and piping.
  5. Removing the Sprinkler: Simultaneously, a second person engages a sprinkler wrench onto the sprinkler's wrenching area, ensuring it's fully seated. Steady, equal force is then applied in opposing directions: clockwise on the SHA fitting (by the first person) to prevent rotation, and counterclockwise on the sprinkler (by the second person) to remove it from the fitting.
  6. Withdrawal: Once the sprinkler is removed, both wrenches and the sprinkler are withdrawn from the clearance hole.

Safety is paramount during usage. Personnel removing a sprinkler must wear safety glasses. The task is explicitly described as a two-person operation.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance are essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Model 3002 Holdback Wrench.

  • Roller Chain Replacement: The roller chain is a wear item and must be replaced if worn or broken to prevent damage to CPVC fittings and pipe, or personal injury. The replacement process is straightforward:
    1. Loosen and remove the Button Head Cap Screw using a 1/4 inch hex bit or allen wrench.
    2. Remove the End Cap.
    3. Remove the old Roller Chain from the Drive Socket Extension.
    4. Align and insert a link of the replacement Roller Chain into the recessed end of the Drive Socket Extension, ensuring it is fully seated.
    5. Align and fully seat the End Cap onto the end of the Drive Socket Extension.
    6. Install the Button Head Cap Screw into the Drive Socket Extension, tightening it with a 1/4 inch hex bit or allen wrench. Care must be taken not to over-tighten to avoid damaging the threads.
  • Replacement Parts: Replacement Chain Kits (P/N 3011) are available and include five replacement chains, ensuring the tool remains functional over time. The wrench itself (P/N 3002) includes two replacement chains upon purchase.

Adherence to all instructions, user precautions, and applicable standards (including those from the National Fire Protection Association and any authorities having jurisdiction) is critical for maintaining the integrity of the device and the fire protection system. Johnson Controls assumes no liability for the use or misuse of this product.
