Overview

The UNICO PowerSpin C8624 is a 24-place centrifuge designed for laboratory use, particularly in clinical labs, physician's offices, and other chemical, industrial, or biological settings where material separation is required. This device is engineered for years of demanding work, incorporating advanced technological innovations and safety features.

Function Description

The primary function of the PowerSpin C8624 is to separate substances of different densities from a liquid mixture by spinning them at high speeds. It accommodates standard 3 to 15 ml tubes (glass or plastic) in its 24-place angled rotor. An optional adapter is available for tubes less than 10 ml or 100mm in length. The centrifuge utilizes a maintenance-free brushless AC motor to achieve speeds ranging from 1,000 rpm to 3,400 rpm, controlled digitally. The separation process is timed using an electronic timer, which can be set for up to 60 minutes.

Usage Features

The PowerSpin C8624 offers several user-friendly features for efficient and safe operation:

  • Digital Controls: The centrifuge is equipped with push-button keypad controls for easy operation. It features a digital display that simultaneously shows the actual running speed and Relative Centrifugal Force (RCF).
  • Variable Speed Control: Users can preset the running speed from 1,000 rpm to 3,400 rpm in 100 rpm increments using the up or down arrow buttons. The display will show the actual running speed and RCF (g) level. During operation, the speed setting can be checked by pressing either the up or down arrow, and changed by pressing and holding the arrow button for more than 2 seconds.
  • Electronic Timer: An electronic timer allows for setting run times from 1 to 60 minutes. The display counts down the remaining time. A beeping signal indicates the end of a run. Similar to speed, the time setting can be checked during operation by pressing an arrow, and changed by pressing and holding an arrow button for more than 2 seconds.
  • Memorized Settings: The centrifuge automatically memorizes the last time and speed settings used. When the unit is turned off and then back on, it will resume these previous settings, streamlining repeated jobs.
  • Start and Stop Functions: A "Start" button initiates the spin cycle. The centrifuge will only operate if the lid is properly closed. A "Stop" button allows the user to halt the centrifuge at any time.
  • Lid Operation: The "Open" button releases the lid, but only when the centrifuge is not spinning, ensuring user safety.
  • Safety Features:
    • Zero RPM Lid Latch Protection: This critical safety feature prevents the lid from being opened while the rotor is still spinning. The lid remains locked until the unit comes to a complete stop.
    • Lid Closed Requirement: The centrifuge will not run unless the lid is properly closed, preventing accidental operation with an open lid.
    • Emergency Lid-Opening: In case of power loss or other situations preventing normal lid opening, an emergency lid-opening hole is provided. A small screwdriver or rod can be inserted to release the safety lock and open the lid manually.
    • Load Balance: It is crucial to balance the load by placing tubes with equal loads opposite each other in the rotor. If spinning a single specimen tube, another tube of the same size filled with water must be installed directly across to maintain balance. This prevents excessive noise, vibration, and potential damage to the centrifuge.
  • Stability: Suction cup rubber feet are integrated into the design to ensure stable benchtop operation, minimizing movement and vibration during use.
  • Power Indicator: A power switch with an indicator light on the back of the unit clearly shows when the centrifuge is powered on.
  • Electronic Cycle Counter: The centrifuge tracks its total cycles of usage. This information can be accessed by pressing and holding the "Stop" button for 4 seconds, displaying the total number of times the centrifuge has spun.

Maintenance Features

The PowerSpin C8624 is designed for relatively low maintenance, ensuring longevity and ease of care:

  • Brushless AC Motor: The motor is a brushless type with permanently sealed bearings, eliminating the need for oiling. This design contributes to the centrifuge's quiet running and reduced vibration.
  • Durable Construction: The enclosure is made of high-impact plastic, providing robustness. The internal rotor chamber is constructed from stainless steel, which is easy to clean and disinfect.
  • Cleaning and Disinfection: The outside of the instrument can be cleaned with a surface cleaner like Formula 409. The stainless steel rotor chamber and cover can be disinfected using a mild solution of bleach or other disinfecting liquid. It is important to allow these parts to dry thoroughly and to avoid drenching or immersing the unit in any liquid.
  • Calibration: While the timer is electronic and requires no calibration, it is recommended to calibrate the centrifuge's RPM at least every 6 months. The speed displayed on the Unico C8624 is derived from a real-time digital sensor on the motor shaft, accurately reflecting the rotor's running speed. The calibrated speed should fall within ±100 rpm of the displayed speed.
  • Electrical Safety: Users are advised not to operate the instrument near water or liquid spills. The unit should be unplugged before cleaning or repairing. Regular checks of the power cord for cuts or damage are recommended, and the centrifuge should not be operated with a damaged cord. Fuse replacement procedures are detailed, emphasizing disconnection of power before replacement.
  • Biohazard Protocol: In the event of a tube breakage, appropriate laboratory procedures must be followed to clean the instrument, wearing proper protective clothing and gloves. A suitable disinfectant should be used, and the sample disposed of properly, adhering to guidelines from organizations like OSHA and CLIA.
