Do you have a question about the Unitek Classic Q1 Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The UNITEK Classic Q1 is a 4-quadrant circular current-free thyristor motor controller, designed for regulating the energy flow in high-voltage DC motor systems. It operates as a basic power section with an integrated current controller, suitable for switch cabinet installation. The device adheres to VDE, DIN, and EG regulations, and is designed with intrinsically safe power sections.

Function Description:

The Classic Q1 is a thyristor controller specifically designed for DC motors, enabling both driving and braking in all four quadrants. This allows for energy feedback into the system, contributing to energy efficiency. The core of its operation lies in a fast analog current control system, implemented through a circular current-free double bridge circuit. The device is typically used in conjunction with UNITEK's REGxx control electronics or third-party products, which plug into the front side for easy access.

The controller manages the motor's current by adjusting the firing angle of its thyristor modules. It features two independent PI (Proportional-Integral) current controllers, RVI-1 and RVI-2, whose characteristics can be adjusted via 4-position DIP switches (S1 and S2). These switches allow for changes in proportional amplification and integral time constant, enabling optimization for various armature circuit inductances. The device also includes an uncontrolled field supply unit, with an optional uncontrolled field rectifier available.

For safety, the Classic Q1 incorporates galvanic isolation between the power section and the housing, as well as between the power section and the control electronics. It includes an internal watchdog for power connection monitoring, and in case of power supply failure or fuse failure, the device switches off and opens the BTB contact.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting: Designed for switch cabinet installation, with specific dimensions and weight depending on the model.
  • Transformer Choke: Auto-transformers, mains chokes, and motor chokes are available in various types and sizes, specified according to the rated current. Inductivity for larger armature circuits can be requested.
  • Electrical Installation: Requires adherence to EU guidelines, EMC standards, and local regulations. Specific instructions are provided for mounting the device, power choke, and filter capacitors on a grounded mounting plate.
  • Two-phase Connection: Detailed specifications for mains choke type, filter capacitors (0.5 µF/600 V~ 2 x 1µF (x) + 2 x 0.5µF (γ)), and conductor length (<250 mm).
  • Motor Connection: Motor conductors, tacho, and all control conductors must be shielded and laid separately from power lines. The rated current of the motor choke should be at least 0.7 times the set peak current to prevent saturation.
  • Power Connections: Can be direct or via an auto-transformer. Fast-acting fuses are required for protection. For 60Hz operation, DIP-switch S3 contacts 1 and 2 must be set to ON.
  • Actual Value Connection: Supports tacho control (DC tacho generators, brushless tachogenerators, incremental encoders) and armature voltage control. For armature voltage control, additional resistors may be needed for voltages >180V.
  • Commissioning: A detailed protocol is provided for checking connections, setting control electronics parameters (P-amplification, I-compensation, D-amplification, actual value, peak current, continuous current, integrator, speed, offset), and adjusting current controller settings.
  • LED Displays: Provide visual feedback on the device's status, including "Enable," "Current command value," "Current controller" (RVI-1, RVI-2), and "Disable logic" (Bridge 1, Bridge 2). Green LEDs indicate active states.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide is included, covering scenarios such as no voltages present, all LEDs dark, specific LEDs dark/bright, motor running at high speed, motor not running uniformly, and no armature current. It provides potential causes and corrective actions, including checking fuses, connections, tacho polarity, current limiting, and motor condition.
