How to replace the shifter cable on mechanical tranmissions
• Put the chain on the smallest sprocket.
• Loosen the clamp bolt on the rear derailleur which holds the cable and pull it out through the
shift lever.
• Inspect the sheaths. If they are damaged or rusty, replace them.
• Grease the new cable and insert it through the lever and all the cable guides and sheaths.
• Follow the instructions detailed above to adjust the gear shifter.
• Cut the cable in such a way that it does not protrude more than 5cm in length.
• Put a metal terminal on the end of the cable to avoid fraying.
Lubrication
Monthly clean and lubricate all the pivots of the rear derailleur, paying special attention to clean-
ing the small pulley. For the lubrication of the sprockets and the chain, follow the instructions de-
scribed above, in the manual TRANSMISSION section.
06 | HEADSET
The headset is the assembly of bearings that allows the rotation of the fork, stem and handlebars
on the bicycle. This section explains how to inspect, lubricate and adjust it.
Inspection
Once a month you should inspect your bike’s headset to check that it is not too loose or tight.
How to check the clearance of the headset
• Stand on top of the bicycle with both feet on the ground.
• Lock the front suspension and tighten the front brake while moving the bicycle back and forth.
• Observe and listen to the movement to detect if there is clearance or cracks in the headset
• Shift to the longest gear (H - smallest sprocket), by actuating on the shifter lever.
• The cable is loosened with the derailleur in its lowest position.
• Look at the sprocket cassette from behind
• Position the small derailleur pulley aligned with the smallest sprocket, by turning the adjusting
screw for the outer stop (H).
• Shift to the shortest gear (L - largest sprocket), by actuating on the shifter lever.
• The cable is stressed, moving the derailleurs to its highest position.
• Position the small derailleur pulley aligned with the largest sprocket, by turning the adjusting
screw for the inner stop (L).
• Push hard the shifter lever trying to raise the chain one more point and forcing it to come out
of the sprocket cassette. Make sure that in doing so, the derailleur does not touch the spokes
and the chain keeps hold inside the cassette.
If the rear derailleur entangles with the spokes when riding the bike, it can cause a fall.
As a final check, raise and lower all the sprockets once more:
• If when in the intermediate positions the shifter makes noise, or the chain does not shift from
one sprocket to another smoothly, act on the tension screw of the cable (usually located in the
shifter lever or sometimes in the rear derailleur), until achieving a perfect shift.
• In the highest position of the derailleur (larger sprocket), check that when pushing the crank
backwards, the derailleur pulley does not touch the sprocket. If so happens, loosen the tension
on the cable.
• Every time when changing the cable tension, make sure that the stops (H and L) that we have
previously set up have not been disarranged.
• The chain must travel all the sprockets, without going out of the inner or outer limit. If neces-
sary, adjust the inner stop (L) and the outer stop (H) again, as explained above.
In case you can not adjust the shifter correctly, or unwanted noise occurs when shifting, take the
bicycle to an authorized mechanic.
