Overview

The Day-Light SKY is an innovative light supply system designed to bring the light of a springtime morning into your home or office. It is intended for use as a bright light therapy system, as well as a task light, reading lamp, or for ambient lighting. While it is an innovative light supply system, it is not classified as a medical device in the USA.

Function Description

The primary function of the Day-Light SKY is to provide bright light therapy, which can help alleviate fatigue and decreased activity commonly experienced during shorter days in fall, winter, and even spring. Regular use during these months aims to keep mood and energy levels up and brighten the user's environment. The device emits light at two intensity settings: a high intensity setting for light therapy and a lower intensity setting for task or ambient lighting.

Usage Features

The Day-Light SKY is designed with versatility and convenience in mind, offering several features to enhance the user experience:

  • Light Therapy Setting: For light therapy, the Day-Light SKY emits 10,000 LUX at a distance of 11 inches. The recommended dosage for daily light therapy sessions is 20-30 minutes, preferably in the morning. Users can activate this setting by pushing the switch to the side with the solid yellow dot marking, which illuminates both light tubes. It is not necessary to stare directly into the light during therapy; users can read, work, eat, or talk on the phone. The light angle should be set around 15 degrees, with the user's eyes approximately in the center of the light.
  • Task/Ambient Lighting Setting: For lower intensity use, such as task or ambient lighting, the device emits 5,000 LUX at 11 inches. This setting is activated by pushing the switch to the side with the yellow "O" marking, which illuminates only one light tube. For non-light therapy uses, it is recommended to move the Day-Light SKY further away or angle the light down over the work area due to its still bright output.
  • Adjustable Angle and Height: The Day-Light SKY features an adjustable arm with two silver adjustment buttons. Pressing these buttons allows the user to move the light enclosure or arm to various positions, enabling adjustment of the light's height and angle. Releasing the button locks the arm in the desired position. This adjustability ensures optimal positioning for light therapy (approximately 15-degree downward angle, with eyes in the center of the light) and allows for repositioning as a task lamp when not used for therapy.
  • Ease of Assembly: The device requires minimal assembly. The base plate ensures stability and is attached by aligning it with a recessed groove on the unit's base and securing it with a single Philips screw.
  • Light Enclosure Rotation: The light enclosure can be rotated counter-clockwise 45 degrees from its packing position for therapeutic or task lighting. It is crucial not to rotate it beyond this range to avoid damaging the device.
  • Warm-up Time: After switching on, the Day-Light SKY's tubes take approximately three minutes to reach full intensity.
  • Daily Use Importance: Consistent daily use is important for maintaining the benefits of light therapy. Missing sessions or discontinuing use may lead to a return of winter-time doldrums, with energy typically returning within a few days of resuming use.
  • Adjusting to Light Intensity: Some users may prefer to turn on the system for a short period before sitting directly in front of it, allowing their eyes to adjust to the brightness more comfortably.
  • Session Adjustment: After about a week of use, individuals can determine the best usage schedule. Some find an additional 15-30 minute session in the afternoon or early evening helpful for combating energy slumps. However, using the Day-Light SKY as a task light after 8 p.m. is generally not recommended as it may delay sleep onset.

Maintenance Features

The Day-Light SKY requires some basic maintenance, primarily related to its light tubes:

  • Light Tube Testing: Before initial use, it is recommended to test the light tubes to ensure both are in working order. If a tube does not light up, it may be loose or damaged.
  • Light Tube Removal and Installation: Instructions are provided for removing and reinstalling light tubes. This process involves unplugging the unit, removing the base plate, repositioning the light head, removing four screws from the back of the unit, gently raising and sliding back the lens, and then depressing a white clip to remove the tube. Installation is the reverse of these steps, ensuring tubes "click" into place.
  • Light Tube Replacement: The Day-Light SKY uses two 55-watt compact fluorescent light tubes. These tubes deteriorate over time, emitting lower light intensity. To maintain effective light therapy, it is recommended to replace the light tubes after two years of use, even if they haven't burnt out. Replacement bulbs can be purchased from local dealers or directly from Uplift Technologies Inc.
  • Warranty: Uplift Technologies Inc. provides a five-year limited warranty against product failure during normal use, excluding light tubes. During the first year, warranty service is free except for delivery charges. From the second to fifth year, service is provided at a prorated charge based on the original purchase date. To ensure warranty information is on file, users are advised to complete and return the Warranty Registration card and retain their original receipt.
  • Packaging for Returns: For any warranty returns, it is strongly recommended to use the original packing material and box, as these are designed to withstand shipping. Damage due to improper packaging may result in repair costs being charged back to the user.

Safety Precautions

Several safety precautions are outlined to ensure safe and effective use:

  • Water Safety: Do not use the Day-Light SKY in or near water, as with any electrical device.
  • Overuse: Avoid overusing the device. Recommended usage is 20-30 minutes each morning. Overuse may lead to irritability, excessive energy, or difficulty falling asleep at bedtime. If symptoms of overuse occur (increased irritability, excessive energy, discomfort), reduce session length or move the light further away. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.
  • Odor: During the first few uses, a harmless odor may be emitted. This will quickly disappear and does not affect the device's use.
  • Medical Consultation: If on prescribed medication, have eye problems, or have a diagnosed chronic skin disease, consult a doctor or ophthalmologist before using the Day-Light SKY or any form of light therapy, as certain conditions or medications may respond unfavorably to light exposure.
