4. REGULATOR SYSTEM
Aregulatorsystemisrequiredtoreducethepressureofthecompressedaircontainedin
thecylindertoanambientpressureinordertosupplybreathableairwhenneeded.Itisalso
possible to connect pressure gauges (analog or digital), IP inators to supply buoyancy
compensators,drysuitsandotherdevicestothissystem.Theregulatorsystemiscomposed
of a pressure reduction device and one or more breathing devices. In this manual, the
pressure-reducingdevice and the breathing device will be indicated, respectively, by the
terms“rststage”and“secondstage.”
4.1 First stage
Apressure-reducingmechanismthatreducesthepressureofthecompressedaircontained
inthecylindertoanintermediaterelativepressureofabout9.5bars(138psi).Therststage
usesastandardpiston,balancedpistonordiaphragmmechanism.
4.2 Secondstage
Thisunitissuppliedbytheintermediatepressureaircomingfromtherststagethroughthe
lowpressurehose.Itfurtherreducesairpressuretobalancewiththeambientpressure.The
secondstagemaybebalancedorunbalancedandequippedwithaVenturieffectcontrol
(V.I.V.A.)and/orwithaninhalationresistancecontrol.
4.3 Auxiliaryemergencysecondstage(octopus)withintegrated
BCinator:AIR2
Alsothisunitisfedbytheintermediatepressureaircomingfromtherststageviaalow
pressurehose.Theiarpressureisfurtherreducedtoreachthebreathingpressure.
Theauxiliaryemergencysecondstageisusedbythediverwhenthemainsecondstagehas
problemsorwhenthebuddydiverisexperiencingproblemsduringthedive.
ThisauxiliaryemergencysecondstagecanbereplacedbyAIR2.Thisunitincludesfeatures
ofbothatraditionalBCinatorandanauxiliaryemergencybreathingdevice.Thereforeit
canbeusedforinating/deatingtheBCortooperateasanauxiliaryemergencybreathing
deviceforthemselvessotogivethemainsecondstagetothebuddyexperiencingproblems.
TheAIR2issimpletouseandsafe,eveninunusualsituations.Thediverwillnotwastetime
tondtheemergencysecondstagesincetheAIR2willalwaysbethere,wherethelefthand
isusedtolookfortheBCinator.
The AIR2 it is also a BC ination and deation device, therefore it has a specic quick
connectiontothelowpressurehosewhichallowsfastconnectionanddisconnectioneven
whenthesystemisalreadypressurized.Thesystemautomaticallystopstheairowfromthe
hoseonceit’sdisconnectedfromtheAIR2usingthequickcoupling(g3-C).
