Overview

The Vansco Multiplexing Module (VMM1615) is a VMM controller designed for vehicle and other DC applications, compatible with steady-state voltages less than 32V. This module is fully compatible with other Vansco Multiplexing Modules, offering a versatile solution for various control needs.

Function Description:

The VMM1615 serves as a central control unit, managing 16 inputs and 15 outputs. It facilitates communication via two CAN communication ports, supporting the CAN 2.0B standard. The primary protocol supported is SAE J1939, with the potential for custom software development to support other protocols. The module is designed to work with VMM software, allowing for ladder logic programming to define its operational behavior. This manual focuses on the hardware components, while software configuration details are covered in separate software manuals.

Important Technical Specifications:

Inputs:

The VMM1615 features 16 configurable inputs, including:

  • Programmable Gain Analog Inputs: These inputs can be configured to adjust their sensitivity, allowing for precise measurement of analog signals.
  • Programmable Attenuation Analog Inputs: These inputs can reduce the amplitude of incoming analog signals, useful for handling higher voltage signals or preventing saturation.
  • Programmable Pull-up/Down Digital Inputs: These inputs can be configured with internal pull-up or pull-down resistors, simplifying wiring for digital switches and sensors.
  • Programmable Pull-up/Down DC Coupled Frequency Type Inputs: These inputs are designed to measure frequency signals, with configurable pull-up/down resistors for signal conditioning.
  • DC-Coupled Frequency Input Capabilities: The module supports DC-coupled frequency inputs, with specific capabilities and configurations detailed in sections 5.2.1 and 5.2.2.
  • Analog Input Capabilities: Detailed specifications for analog inputs are provided in section 5.3.1, with configuration options in section 5.3.2.

Outputs:

The VMM1615 provides 15 outputs, categorized as follows:

  • 10 Amp High-Side Outputs: Capable of switching up to 10 amps on the high side (connecting to the positive supply). Capabilities are detailed in section 6.1.1.
  • 5 Amp High-Side Outputs: These outputs can switch up to 5 amps on the high side. Two of these outputs also include accurate current sensing capabilities for monitoring loads or hydraulic control (section 6.1.2). Other 5A high-side output capabilities are in section 6.1.3.
  • 2.5 Amp High-Side Outputs: These outputs can switch up to 2.5 amps on the high side. Two of these outputs also include accurate current sensing capabilities (section 6.1.4).
  • 2.5 Amp Low-Side Outputs: These outputs can switch up to 2.5 amps on the low side (connecting to ground), with current sensing capabilities (section 6.2.1).
  • 1 Amp Solid State Relays: These outputs provide reliable, silent switching for loads up to 1 amp (section 6.3.1).
  • Output Configuration: High-side output configurations are described in section 6.1.5, and low-side output configurations with current sense are in section 6.2.2.
  • Installation Connections: Specific installation connections for high-side outputs are in section 6.1.6, for low-side outputs with current sense in section 6.2.3, and for solid state relays in section 6.3.2.
  • Diagnostics: Solid state relay diagnostics are covered in section 6.3.3.

Communication:

  • CAN (Controller Area Network): The VMM1615 features two CAN communication ports, supporting the CAN 2.0B standard.
  • J1939 Protocol: The standard protocol supported is SAE J1939, with capabilities detailed in section 7.1.1 and configuration in section 7.1.2.
  • Installation Connections: J1939 CAN installation connections are provided in section 7.1.3.

Power:

  • Logic Power: The module requires logic power, with capabilities outlined in section 4.1.1.
  • Busbar Power: Busbar power capabilities are described in section 4.2.1.
  • Sensor Supply: The module provides a sensor supply, with capabilities in section 4.3.1 and connection details in section 4.3.2.

Usage Features:

  • Development System Integration: The VMM1615 is designed for easy integration into a development system, including a PC, Controller I/O Board, power source, and Data Link Adapter (DLA). This setup allows for verification of ladder logic applications and facilitates software development and downloading.
  • Software Tools: Parker Vansco provides the VMMS software tool for creating and downloading software, requiring a product key.
  • Data Link Adapter (DLA): A DLA is essential for connecting the VMM1615 to a development system. Drivers for the DLA must be installed on the PC before use.
  • Power-Up Procedure: A detailed power-up procedure is provided to ensure safe and correct initialization of the development system, including voltage settings and input configurations.
  • Application Examples: The manual includes various application examples, such as implementing safety interlocks, controlling indicator lights, proportional valves, and motor speed, and using one analog input as two digital inputs. Sensor power connection examples are also provided.
  • Diagram Conventions: Standardized symbols are used in schematic diagrams for clarity, representing various inputs, outputs, sensors, switches, loads, resistors, batteries, fuses, and ground connections.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Regulations: Strict safety regulations are outlined for handling electronic equipment, welding, installation, start-up, and maintenance. These include precautions against electrical damage, electromagnetic interference, and personal injury.
  • Welding Precautions: Specific steps are provided for welding after installation, including disconnecting electrical connections and batteries, and ensuring proper grounding of the welder.
  • Emergency Stop: Vehicles using the VMM1615 must be equipped with an easily accessible emergency stop that disconnects the supply voltage to the control system's electrical units.
  • Maintenance Safety: Before performing any maintenance or fault diagnosis, it is crucial to ensure the machine cannot start moving, functions are safely positioned, the machine is turned off, the hydraulic system is relieved of pressure, and the supply voltage to the control electronics is disconnected.
