Self-help, vehicle care 197
Charge a d isconnected battery every
6weeks.
Protection of electronic
componen ts
In order to avoid the breakdown of
electronic components within the electrical
system, never d isconnect the battery with
the engine running. Never start the engine
while the battery is d isconnected (e.g.
when using jump leads).
To avoid dam aging the vehicle, do not
make any modifications to the electrical
system, e.g. connecting additional
cons umers or tamp ering with e lectronic
control units (chip tuning).
Disconnecting / connecting the battery
from /t o the ele ctr ical s y st em
Disconnect the battery from the vehicle
electrical system before charging :
first detach the negative and then the
positive lead.
Do not reverse the polarity of the battery,
i.e. do not confuse the terminals for the
positive and negative leads. When
connecting, sta rt with the positive lead and
then c onnect the neg ative lead.
Vehicle storage
If y our vehicle is to be s tored for long
periods without use, we recommend you
consult a workshop for ad vice.
9 Wa rning
Ensure there is a dequate ve ntilation
when c harging the battery. There is a risk
of explosion if gases generated during
charging are allowed to accumulate.
Battery acid is poisonous a nd corrosive.
Do not a llow it to contact eyes, skin,
fab ric s or p ainted surfaces; direct
contact may c ause injuries a nd damage.
Avoid dealing with the battery nea r
naked flam es and anything that would
generate sparks. No smoking!
9 Warning
Electronic ignition systems generate very
high voltages. Do not touch the ignition
system; high voltage can be fatal.
