Overview

The Veigel Compact II Hand Control is a mobility device designed for drivers with limited or no use of their legs, enabling hands-only operation of a vehicle. It provides increased mobility by mechanically connecting to the vehicle's gas and brake pedals, allowing for acceleration, slowing down, idling the engine, braking, and locking the brake without the use of feet.

Function Description:

The hand control allows drivers to operate the accelerator and brake functions of an automatic transmission vehicle using a single handle. To accelerate, the driver pulls the handle back. To slow down, the handle is allowed to move forward. Releasing the handle returns the engine to idle speed. Braking is achieved by pushing the handle forward. The device also includes a brake lock button, which acts as a starting aid for situations like standing on a hill, at a light, or when changing gears in automatic transmissions. To engage the brake lock, the handle is pushed into the brake position, the brake lock button on the side of the accelerator handle is pushed and held, and then the handle is released. The pressure from the pedal maintains the lock. To unlock, the brake lever is slightly pushed, and the lock automatically releases.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Veigel Compact II Hand Control is specifically designed and intended for use only with vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. It does not operate a clutch or shift the vehicle's gear lever. The device is intended for right-hand installation and operation and should not be modified for left-hand use. The installation requires a professionally trained technician. The hand control's linkage to the brake pedal should have a play of 1/8” to 3/16” (2mm to 5mm). The accelerator linkage must allow for free movement, ensuring the hand control returns to the idle position easily and without assistance. A pedal guard is mandatory for physically impaired persons to prevent accidental activation or blockage of the foot pedals, and it must be ordered separately for the specific vehicle type.

Usage Features:

  • Hands-Only Operation: Enables drivers with leg impairments to control acceleration and braking.
  • Accelerator Handle (Item 1): Pulled back to accelerate, released to slow down or idle.
  • Brake Button (Item 2): Used to lock the brake for starting aid.
  • Contoured Cover (Item 3): Provides access to internal connections for maintenance or repair.
  • Control Release Lever (Item 4): Allows the hand control to be disengaged and folded out of the way for drivers who use foot pedals. To disengage, the locking pin is rotated downward, allowing the control to fold back. To re-engage, the locking pin is rotated upward, and the control is pushed forward to engage the pin.
  • Lateral Cover (Item 5): Covers the side of the brake gear box.
  • Brake Gear Box (Item 6): Securely fastens the hand control to the vehicle.
  • Safety Precautions: Drivers must keep their left hand on the steering wheel at all times. It is crucial to practice using the hand control in a safe environment before driving on public roads. Non-physically impaired drivers should normally use the foot pedals.
  • Pedal Guard: Recommended to prevent accidental application of gas and brake pedals by passengers or objects.
  • Unobstructed Movement: Before each drive, ensure nothing blocks the control's full range of motion.
  • Unauthorized Drivers: Only persons familiar with and dependent on the hand control should drive the vehicle using it. Drivers who can adequately use foot pedals are not authorized to use the Veigel hand controls.

Maintenance Features:

  • Professional Installation and Service: The hand control must be installed and serviced by professionally trained technicians.
  • Scheduled Maintenance:
    • After the first 600 miles (1,000 km): Check all screw joints, especially those to the pedal arms.
    • Every 6,000 - 9,000 miles (10,000 - 15,000 km): Grease joints and ball joints, reset and retighten all screw joints, and check the adjustment of the linkage.
    • Every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or annually: Lubricate all bearings (ball joints and slide bearing surfaces) with spray grease, and check all screws and attachments for tight fit.
  • Regular Checkups: The hand control must be kept in top operating condition, and any abnormalities noticed during driving should prompt a visit to a qualified service professional.
  • Warranty: Veigel/MPD warrants products to be free from defects in material and workmanship for three years from the original customer's purchase, provided all warning messages are adhered to and regular maintenance procedures are followed. The warranty is effective only if products are installed according to Veigel/MPD's recommendations by an authorized dealer.
  • Serial Number: Each unit has a unique serial number, which is important for any queries or requests to Veigel. This number, along with the part number and fabrication number, helps track the product.
