Also, check that the PTO (electric clutch) switch is in the OFF position and cruise control is disengaged (NEUTRAL/OFF position). Ensure you have fuel in the tank. It's also helpful to let the engine warm up for a few minutes before engaging the mower, and to start the mower in a cleared area.
